Carrie Underwood Continues to Play On
When you've sold 10 million albums in a really, really short amount of time, you'd never dream of retiring. You'd play on. And on. And on. How perfect, then, that Carrie Underwood has named her third album Play On. It doesn't come out for another 64 days so I don't have an advance copy yet. But I did just see her in concert last night (Aug. 30) and she gave no indication of "new stuff." She played a long list of her hits and a couple of covers but not once did she ask the audience if it was OK to try out some of her new songs.
Two things I do know about the album are that there will be a title track (duh) and that she is working with Mark Bright, one of the producers behind Some Hearts and Carnival Ride. He is a fully-vested hit-making machine, also having made albums with Rascal Flatts, Sara Evans, Gary Allan, Lee Ann Womack, Billy Ray Cyrus, Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn and Trisha Yearwood.
So why would Underwood look any further for help on this new album? I'm not sure, but USA Today is reporting that Underwood produced a track with Sweden's Max Martin. He is the genius behind such infectious tunes as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Pink's "So What."
Does this mean that there's a pop dance mix in Underwood's future? Or a countrier sound in Martin's future? We'll have to wait until the album comes out before we know who influenced who -- that is, if the track ends up on the album. If it does, I'm sure the tune will be a major breakthrough.

Rugeruby says:
It’s exciting to know the album’s title:) I think this will be a very high selling album for her because of so much anticipation. I’ve heard that Play On, Change, and Cowboy Casanova will be on the album, but nothing’s confirmed yet but the name and artwork
Kate says:
The picture is absolutely gorgeous and I love the title. The anticipation for ‘Play On’ is mounting to unbearable heights.
Karen says:
I can’t wait for the new album. The picture and title are both great. I know it will be great because she just keeps geting better and better.
lylah says:

i cant wait for her album when it drops on nov.3rd i am so anxious and i know she has amazing songs, mark bright “is the man” who has worked with her on every album and they were hits, so you know they have some great songs and she will definitely be receiving more number ones!…just like all her fans i am excited about getting my “play on”…soon!

Foundation is a great thing for checotah and the fact that she is giving back to our town…this is why we love her because she is still the girl from checotah and fame hasnt allowed her to forget that!!…love her and i wish her the best because she is an amazing singer and person and good people deserve the best!! :)
Andrea says:
When is the first single going to be released??? I am so eager to hear it! Carrie is just absolutely amazing!!!!!!
lauren says:
Can’t Wait……. Counting Down The Days.!!!!!
Jill says:
My husband & I are huge Carrie fans, we’ve noticed that she’s not on tv like she used to be. Meaning the country song shows or the award shows. What has happenend to our Carrie?
OuidaW says:
WOW!!! Our gal is really doing it up great this time!! What a georgeous picture. Just a natural beautiful all american Oklahoma girl that can out sing anyone!!!!!
Genia says:
She looks gorgeouse in that picture. I really cant wait til’ i have this cd in my hands. Only 64 days OMG i dont think i cant wait that long!!!
steve says:
that is a perfect album cover, she looks amazing as usual. a lot of people keep asking where she has been and why she isn’t seen as much these days. the answer is simple: 1) to build anticipation 2) to avoid overexposure and 3) everyone deserves a break, especially EOTYs!
Sis says:
I Love Carrie!!!! I can’t wait for her new album. All her songs on this album will be GREAT!!!! . All her songs are GREAT!!! GO CARRIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Becky Shoaf says:
Why is carrie not singing at the CMT festival
Becky Shoaf says:
I can’t stand Taylor Swift
AC says:
Good for you Becky. This is a CU post. I doubt Carrie fans really want to talk to you about not liking Taylor. Get over it.
Sammi says:
I love Carrie. She has an amazing voice. I cannot wait for her new single to get released to radio. I don’t think Carrie fans like myself cant wait any longer haha. :)
highwayman3 says:
You may have mistaked Mark Bright for Mark Wright when listing the previous names he worked with. It was Mark Wright with a ‘W’ who worked with Lee Ann, and Brooks & Dunn and not Mark Bright. Similiar names but different styles of producing.
Amy says:
Love the new album cover. Can’t wait for November 3rd to get this album. Looking forward to the new single, too!!!
Carrie looks beautiful!!!!
rai says:
gosh. She lokks super young. I did not recognised her at first. She looks like a teengaer and that name for her album gives me shivers down my spine:)
Tenn says:
I’m waiting to hear Oklahoma Wind that Carrie wrote with Bill Anderson -I hope it’s on the album , just an incredible song - and a new Carrie concert tour with all the new songs! I love Carrie’s concerts because I love to hear Carrie sing and I love her casualness when she talks to the fans - I’ve been to many of her concerts and she always rambles on about different things and is very humorous and when she called the little girls on stage to help her sing All American Girl you never knew what would happen some would sing some wouldn’t but Carrie was so sweet - the fact that her mother and sisters are all elementary school teachers showed through in Carrie too. So I wonder what’s in store for this tour -
countrygirl says:
According the Nashville insisders “The Most Anticipated CD of the Year”. What else would one expect from a 6 time winner of Best Vocalist?
Debbjr says:
Ugh it’s been so nice with her absence… Time for more force feeding…Funny how Brad’s last CD was titled “Play”. Now Scarrie has “Play on”…will she ever be original? Or just continue to be the overrated and overexposed Beyonce Knowles of country? NEXT…
Becky B says:
I don’t get her black eyebrows? Why don’t they fix that!?
oooh says:
She looks pretty. Her eyebrows look pretty. Give her face expression not to bland.
Sammy says:
Actually her eyebrows are light brown. Look great.
Robin says:
Alison - well, well, well - hmm - you are a very confusing person. I read your review of Carrie’s concert and was quit surprised to see your name at the bottom of it. You might just be a closet Carrie fan afterall.
Becky Shoaf - Carrie did not sing at CMA music Fest’s big stage. She performed at the Opry prior to the music fest and played the charity softball game. But, she didn’t sing on the main stages because she went home for her mother’s 60th birthday. Although, I missed seeing her last night, I’m glad she choose her mothers milestone birthday. On your second post. Why? This has nothing to do with her.
JUST says:
I love the photo and the reason they are not saying too much about the album alison is to build anticipation.Carrie has had no new song on country radio for like going on five months. That’s anticipation. They know they are sitting on something great so why rush things. Her team doesn’t want her to get overexposed like some other artists.Taking a break from radio, missing award shows, and doing very small shows here and there build anticipation. At some point I think all artists should take a couple of months off the radio.People don’t want to hear you all the time especially if you’re not that great a singer. However, Carrie is.This will be a huge album from Carrie.Showing what amazing vocal ability, great meaningful adult songwriting, and personal artistry can bring to the table.
star wars says:
Gee a flower in her hair wonder were she got taht idea.
Brenda says:
Loved your review from tribune-very nice things you said. Debbjr, thought you were a fan, oh, maybe there are two of you.
Anyway, Thanks Alison for the nice review, very much appreciated when no bias is included.

adriennay says:
and so the haters have come out to play! never seems to amaze me when theirs a story about carrie the haters insist she is overexposed yet their the ones reading a story about her,im assuming carrie made you do it? no one is force feeding carrie down anybody’s throats “debbjr”…it is her fans who love it when she is promoting,or when she is on the radio, award shows, etc… anything carrie we enjoy,so NO it has NOT been nice without her..that is a haters opinion when you say that which means sh*t! ….she is doing good things for others..tell me what have you done for others besides letting your ugliness show on this blog?…you pinpoint others as if you are high and mighty “puhlease”..the people that feel forced fed with anything carrie are probably the people who prey on others success such as carrie because you stew in hate and are pathetic. you people do it to yourself did carrie force you to read a story about her?? you make no sense…she is original i dont know what your trying to say..other then its a very lame statement..and she didnt copy brad’s album title LOL ..seriously are you for real? i question your intelligence! “becky b”- please put a picture on the internet and then we can dissect your face..i doubt your a supermodel or i doubt you are as pretty as carrie you are a superficial person and your behavior is very poor…your insecurities are showing because when people make fun of other people’s looks their playing on their own insecurities..you poor thing!..”star wars”..i know your post very well you are always so full of hate..”Ugh it would be so nice without your opinons and your absence would not be missed… haters are the ones that try to “force feed” their ignorant opinions whenever theres a story about carrie and like i said it means sh*t……
My true feelings says:
I’m not a hater, though I’m sure I’ll catch it from some of the hypocrites here who spew venom about any female country artist not named Carrie Underwood.
I bought multiple copies of both “Some Hearts” and “Carnival Ride,” at least partly to show my loyalty to an artist I bonded with on “American Idol.”
But I’m NOT among those eagerly awaiting “Play On.”
For me, the second album was a huge disappointment.
“Carnival Ride” showed little growth from “Some Hearts,” which supposedly was made under duress while headlining the “American Idol” tour.
For the most part, all Carrie did on CR was repeat the formula from the first album — smart but boring.
I ended up giving away or trading in my “Carnival Ride” CDs.
I have no plans to buy the third album, but might buy digital singles.
bill says:
Yea she does nothing for me. Just thought I’d come in here and bother her fans sense they feel they have to go on everyones site and run them down.
Robin says:
My true feelings - hmmm - “Carnival Ride” is a very different pop country album than “Some Heart’s” is. “Carnival Ride” is much more country than “Some Hearts” and there are no straight pop songs on “Carnival Ride” where there were 4 straight pop songs on “Some Hearts”. Yes, “Before He Cheats” and “Last Name” had a video and vibe linkage, but that’s it. That was to pull a story out a bit. It doesn’t even come close to making them similar albums. That’s like saying all of Martina’s albums are the same because it’s her voice singing all the songs. Did you expect Carrie to turn into Miranda Lambert? She grew as Carrie.
Brad Paisley’s CD’s all have that Brad Paisly song vibe. Same is true of all of Kenny’s current CD’s (all the beach stuff). George Strain has 25 years of the same style of country. Same thing as Alan Jackson.
“Just a Dream” is like nothing on “Some Hearts”. “Some Hearts” (the song) fortunately is like nothing on “Carnival Ride”. There is no “I Ain’t in Checotah Anymore” type songs on “Carnival Ride”. “Some Hearts” had no classic countyr remakes (”I Told You So”) and nothing that sounded like one. “All American Girl” (a song for her dad) and “Don’t Forget To Remember Me” (a song for her mom) while both tributes to her parents, were very different songs.
And, there is absolutely nothing as strong and noteable as “I Know You Won’t” on “Some Hearts”. Pound for pound, “Some Hearts” may have sold more, but “Carnival Ride” is the FAR superior CD.
cntry says:
debbjr–That is a copied name from one of Carries fans that is a hate name that they vote no with at yes.com and we all know who’s fans it is and it is not Taylors Fans
Tim says:
The truth is, many of Carrie’s songs are alike, and it gets boring fast. She has a good voice, but most of her performances bore me to tears. Say all you want about “haters”, Carrie fans, but it’s not like Carrie articles and blogs are the only ones to get negative comments. Any post regarding Taylor is flooded with negativity. I can’t even stand to listen to Carrie anymore, and the fans have a lot to do with it. I used to visit her board, and Carrie fans felt the need to cut down every single female artist that was not Carrie. I got tired of reading about how Miranda, Faith, LeAnn, and countless others suck and that Carrie is the savior of country music. It’s hard to take any fan base seriously that says that Martina McBride doesn’t have some of the best vocals in the industry (as Carrie fans said).
To Tim says:
Tim, I agree the certain fans are a little over the top. It’s why artists don’t like looking at message boards (Martina McBride doesn’t even have one on CMT for that reason!). However, people should not let the attitudes and beliefs of others on messageboard influence their opinion of an artist. Just ignore message board activity if it affects you so negatively (just like the artists themselves). I for one would never judge an artist or entire fanbase as a whole based on the opinion of 10-100 people posting on a message board. Point is: the fans that are so judgmental and bash other artists should not skew your opinion of an artist - to be honest, if the artists read some things some people say about other artists, they would be truly disappointed in some of their fans.
DIANA says:
TO TIM:
-I love listening to Carrie Underwood and other artists
but don’t understand why Tim is making a comment about her if he is sick of listening to her. Your are just jealous
of her fame and need to keep your mouth shut because her fans love her!!!!!!!!!
Kate says:
My true feelings and Tim:
I say goood riddance! Go like who you will with the knowledge that many people don’t feel the same way you do about the stars you support or the one’s you don’t support.
The country music industry and the entertainment industry in general support Carrie Underwood as is evident by the many awards and accolades.
Tenn says:
The albums title was taken from a song on the album titled “Play On” written by Carrie Underwood, Natalie Hemby and Luke Laird

Most of these people are the same just changing names, if you ever go to yes you know who they are by what they say they just can not stand that Carrie is coming out with new music and anyone who says Carries music is all the same you are laughable. The way I see it Carrie has give a year to the others to do what ever But she is back get over it. It must be awful to spend everyday of your life hating on a person and anyone feel free to visit a certain room at yes and you can see where all the hate is
countrygirl says:
It’s Taylor fans. They are jealous of Carrie’s talent. They will now throw sales numbers out, but the fact is, Carrie has the TALENT awards.
cntry says:
It is not Taylors Fans!!
cntry says:
They come to everything Taylor or Carrie and try to get something going between the Fans Don’t play their games
cine says:
I don’t think it’s Taylor’s fans either, we know who they are. They want their Idol to be on top, but she will never out do Carrie, because Carrie actually can sing!!
Dusint says:
To “My true feelings” why don’t you just go to a Taylor Swift concert… that is where you belong NOT HERE!
I cannot wait for Carrie’s new album! Carrie is an amazing artist and her vocals are awesome! She CAN AND DOES SING LIVE!!! (I know that Taylor sings live, clearly we can hear shes live)
Brian says:
Carrie does everything for me. Saw her this weekend…she is more amazing live than I remembered. Her voice and presentation were above great. I love the diversity in her songs. She can go from a heartfelt ballad to an upbeat fun song with ease. I am anxiously awaiting her 3rd album Play On on November 3rd. It will be one of the best albums this year.
andie says:
come on carrie fans, dont mind about taylor fans, just let them talk, what do we care, taylor is always on tv and everything but when awards season cmes carrie alwyas show..and thats what matter…we are better than this, dont lower yourselves to their level
cntry says:
It is not Taylor Fans!!!
Robin says:
I bellieve you cntry. I’m starting to think it’s really not Taylor fans. Taylor (although I’m not a big fan of her singing or writing) is a nice girl. Her fans wouldn’t act that way - right? Although there is one that is a Taylor fan (Mildred, Ruby some plane Jane name like that). But, other than that, I think it’s just people that likes to start trouble.
There are some people on Carrie’s board that hates anyone that’s not Carrie, but it’s like 3 people who post a ton and mostly negative stuff. I personally have never seen anyone be negative about Martina and most postings I see on Carrie’s board shows that most of those fans are also fans of Miranda. They did jump on LeAnn when she opened her mouth about Carrie - but she was asking for that. And, they did go overboard with Faith after those notorious CMA’s because they just would not believe she was just kiddling (but no one cares about that anymore either).
So, the only one that gets negativity is Taylor. And, when I say negativity, I’m talking about over the top personal attacks. People should be allowed to say that they don’t like someone’s singing or songwriting without it being called “hating”. Although there’s really not much reason to talk that much about another artist on anothers board. Anyway, that’s my two centers.
By the way Alison usually causes this turmoil herself and she is a Taylor fan. But, I’m starting to think she’s changing her ways.
country1girl says:
Take a look at the Taylor message board, and mention Carrie’s name. The Taylor fans will show their tru colors.
I’m sure Taylor is a very nice girl. I have been vocal about her not being able to sing, and I am not alone there. But yes, her fans are over the top. They are young, and don’t know how to accept criticism. They viciously attack any messenger that doesn’t declare Taylor as the queen of the world. It’s truly sad.
sissy says:
I agree cntry…it is NOT the Taylor fans. I think you know which fans it is, like I know. I don’t want to start anything by saying, but a real jealousy problem!
Kanndie says:
It will be so good to see Carrie again. She has been so missed this summer while working on her new album. Play On is a great title and the cover is superb! I have loved Carrie since American Idol days. She is the best female country singer to come from AI. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of her soon!
justina says:
im sorry but this is sooooooooo stupid..why are you people fighting about something thats so insignificant it doesnt matter what haters think about carrie “whooooo cares” ignore them because really it is irrelevant what they think and it doesnt change carrie’s success or career she will still have a very long career in country music, she will still make record albums, she will still tour ,and she will still win awards and so forth…so let them hate.. “whoooooooooooooo cares”….also it really is stupid to be bickering with each other about taylor and carrie “whooooooooo cares”…why are fans disrespecting these ladies when you compare and try to take away this or that and discredit them that is disrespecting them and i think that is disgusting because they are both hardworking and deserve better then this they are stars in their own right. carrie is a sweet wonderful person she sings so pure and her voice is very hypnotic she has tons of fans, her career is amazing her achievements are unbelievable considering shes only been here for the last 4 years, she is a hardworking girl, and the country academy and the grand ol’ opry accept her as one of country music’s finest..she is somebody important in the music world..and so is taylor they have promising careers so “carrie and taylor fans relax!”…i love carrie im a mega fan but their is no need to fight with the taylor fans, and vice versa.. actually taylor doesnt even bother me she seems like a sweet girl and she seems to be levelheaded its really refreshing to find girls like taylor and carrie now a days, im not much of a fan of taylor’s voice or music but you know she’s not for everyone and thats okay that isnt a good enough reason though to put someone down same thing goes for carrie she isnt for everyone i get that but it isnt a good enough reason to put her down either, i root for all female country singers because its dominated by men so the fact that these 2 ladies and others are doing their thing and having the times of their lives and are being recognized by the industry then im so proud of them and “more power to them”…i wish them the best because they are good people and they try to help others thru foundations…leave them alone already!!
geeze fans of all artists relax~

People like different stuff. When it come to music, some are drawn to the voice, some to the beat, some to the production. Just love what you love.
countryiscool says:
Love most of the country artists, it’s the fans I can’t stand–too competitive, and not allowed to love more than one artist without bashing others. Grow up. Enjoy the artists you like, let others do the same. I’m sure the artists aren’t happy about bashers either.
thetruefan says:
Yes, Bashers are disgusting. No one should make untrue degrading statements about anyone. What’s just as bad though is the folks who attack someone just because they don’t agree with them, and label them bashers. This is America, and we are all entitled to our own opinions/
Gina says:
I’m looking forward to this, but not in a massive way. Carrie is an amazing singer, one of the best in the genre, and even though I’m a Taylor fan, I can admit it’s 10x better than Swift’s. But there is something about Carrie that I can’t put my finger on that stops me from being a raver fan. She lacks a little of the… personality? Or the quality, of a star? I’m not sure if I’m putting across what I mean correctly. But she’s a lovely woman and I hope her album does very well, shall certainly grab a copy if I see it out.
I don’t think you can label any certain singers fans in message board stirring. Every fanbase can be crazy whether it be Taylor/Carrie/Martina etc. Any fan who thinks that personal insults at others make their own artist look better are sadly mistaken.
I’m not sure about the radio silence on Carrie’s part actually, that it will prevent overexposure or build anticipation. I think in an age of ubiquitous media, absence can be harmful and while Carrie’s been away Taylor Swift has got a firm grip on the current country queen title. No matter Carrie’s talent, there still has to be publicity to fuel album sales and with so much spotlight on Taylor, it may make breaking Play On a little harder. It reminds me a little of Kelly Clarkson’s third album, which flopped a little commercially because she took a break. Carnival Ride has gone what? 2x platinum in nearly two years, where as Fearless has had less than a year to go nearly 4x. I hate making all these Taylor comparisons, but to keep Carrie on the market sadly it IS a numbers game. Anyways, I do hope Play On is a great sucess.
thetruefan says:
Yeah, Gina I agree. Taylor sux. You put it so tenderly though.
this is how it is! says:
CARRIE IS GREAT. END OF NEGATIVITY!
sissy says:
haha Gina, your going to be very surprised!
omaiah says:
i love and respect carrie for her hard work and her hard earned success it probably wasnt easy being the new kid on the block and just stepping off a reality tv show she had a lot to proove and she had a lot of pressure riding on her shoulders to proove that she deserved to be with the rest of her fellow country super stars..she has established herself and has planted her foot solid in country and i am so proud of her, pretty good huh? for a shy small town southern country girl!…love miss underwood !!…i think for myself and her fans can probably agree with me on this, we admire, love carrie for her vocals her beautifull songs that she has blessed us all in different ways, she has touched us all thru music we feel a connection with her because of that and her charm and her sweet personality, and the fact that she always thanks us at concerts she calls us her bosses! “lol” and she is very grateful for what she has she doesnt take it for granted she knows that it can all go away..she has said in an acceptance speech once “she doesnt know why God has blessed her and she will try figuring that out for the rest of her life…i can answer that for carrie…God blessed her with an amazing gift to bless others thru her music she uplifts her fans spirits and she moves us, she also has a good heart and she helps others who are less fortunate she is doing good things for people and not just thru music but she is giving back she is a good person and God knew she would bless the world with her voice and her heart…thank God for carrie!!…
just a carrie fan stopping by on a carrie blog for the right reasons :)
ILoveAllThe CarebearsInTheWorld says:
gina - you will be surprised carrie has the most loyal fans not to mention their are tons and tons of us out there trust me when you take a voice like carrie’s and the music carrie and her team create…she will surprise you!…she has been gone a little bit but she really hasnt been gone, she has working on her album, she has been doing some charity work and working with a representative from the ACM’S to help make a new foundation for her hometown C.A.T.S., she has been singing for the troops, and singing at country festivities, photshoots and she will also be hosting the CMA’S with Brad Paisley..she has been busy and even though she is not doing so much in the spotlight she is still working behind the scenes and she is still getting recognized for other things then just being “entertainer of the year”… people make it seem like shes been gone for years…i have no doubt in my mind that her being “gone” will hurt carrie’s album sales or career if anything it has made me love her even more for her good heart and taking the time to put her priorities first..and that is her new foundation as so on..i dont think taylor has taken the “queen title” away from her but since you think she has then carrie will quickly claim whats hers…(no offense to taylor i think shes a nice girl but her vocals arent strong)i think a little break for carrie was good for her, forget what others think and put the world aside for a moment she really needed to slow down, and focus on her and her family her boyfriend, life is more important sometimes!!… and since she’s been on the road for a whole year, award shows, interviews hosting, commercials, and so on i dont think anyone can blame a girl or shall i say “entertainer of the year” for getting some peace and quiet for herself…she deserves it !!…
“carrie is ready! were ready! and believe me when i say this ..the QUEEN is back to gives us another amazing year!!….the game has started so “PLAY ON”

Beautiful album cover and the I love the CD title. Just love her new single Cowboy Casanova, it has a rock edge to it and has such an infectious beat and as usual Carrie’s vocals are amazing. Looking forward to hearing her beautiful voice on the radio and being able to listen to some new wonderful music from her. Glad Carrie was able to take some time off and relax while making this album after having such a brutal schedule the last four years. I’m sure it will be refected in her music.
carrie’sBest says:
Jamie i agree…im glad that she was able to relax a little, she was still busy with her album, and doing some charity work and photoshoots and so forth but it has been a break for her compared to just last year…she was able to enjoy her family and boyfriend her friends and thats what life is all about anyway the loved ones in our life…i hope she feels refreshed and i cant wait for nov3rd and nov11th i will be watching her host the CMA’S again with brad paisley…shes a “wondeful beautifull perfect all american girl” :)

well said
Robin says:
Carrie has only had about a 3 month hiatis. Artist do need to do a “small” break betwen albumshg. Carrie is roughly a year ahead of Taylor. Taylor will need a break in roughly a year to avoid over exposure. That doesn’t mean she needs to disappear for a year, but it does mean she should take a few months off from the radio so people may actually care about her music again.
“Fifteen” was released prior to “Cowboy Casanova”, but “Cowboy Casanova” flew past “Fifteen” on the charts in less than a week from release. That’s because there is a ton of anticipation and desire for new music from Carrie.
barb b says:
guess what carrie fans do
