Kenny Chesney's ESPN Song Scores Big

Posted: August 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

I was a cheerleader in college, so I've done my time on the sidelines and at countless pep rallies. We'd always be pretty moved watching the team give the game everything they had. But I've never been as moved as I was when I heard Kenny Chesney's "This Is Our Moment." It's the song he put together for ESPN that will debut during the College Football Kickoff Weekend on Thursday (Sept. 3). When you hear it, you'll hear how he finds these parallels between his attitude and that of the players.

When he opens the tune with hard-charging guitars and "We've been sweatin' our whole life long, just to get this right/It's a work hard, hit hard struggle, it's a sacrifice," you aren't really sure who exactly he's talking about. Because that struggle and sacrifice is one both artists and athletes know well. The good ones, anyway.

Then it all starts to make sense. He's talking about the football players, right? Because he says it's time to blow it up, time to lock and load, time to take the field, time to start the show. And the chorus, about "This is our moment/This is our time/And we ain't holding back, we're laying it all on the line/This is our destiny/It's our night to shine," feels like it's all about the team and how hard they've worked for this chance to go out and do what they've practiced so long and hard for.

But can't the same be said of Chesney and his sport? Yes, and so it goes in the second verse when he touches on the motivation for making music (pretty girls) and how his moment arrives when it's time to turn it up, time to rock 'n' roll, time to take the stage, time to start the show. With just one listen you'll sense how well Chesney has captured, both musically and lyrically, the energy, passion, drive and anticipation that athletes and artists feel right before they take their kind of field. That is their moment.

I wish they would throw Faith Hill under the bus and let Kenny take over the NFL Sunday Night theme. Of course Kenny can sing one of his OWN songs.

Go to the ESPN site for college football and see how much them college football fans and especially men are angry that Kenny is singing the song. They hate the idea that Kenny’s music is going to be played before the game.

Alison can you please get another job. I’m sick of your opinions and your gushing of your favorites. Go get a real job at a real newspaper.

Okay, I’ll admit I know nothing about today’s football scene, professional or college. Not only can I not name any pro football players(maybe 1 or 2), I don’t know who won the Superbowl last year, let alone who even played in it, nor do I care. However…I DO know basic football fundamentals. That being said, I believe the photo you posted is from a professional football game, not college. My reason being, the football itself. Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the college football have white stripes on it? The football in the picture above does not.. Indicating that these are professional teams playing. So it’s quite possible Alison knows as much about music as I do about football. The difference being I would never go to a football message board, and start disrespecting the sport by claiming to know more than I actually do.

I think it is a great idea for Kenny to do a theme song for college football.Hey football and country music just go together.Football and any music goes together.Hank has done great with the Monday night theme song and Faith has done great with the Sunday night theme song. Why not a college theme song?Great idea. All you bashers that do not like the idea, get over it.Looking forward to hearing this song.I am sure it will be great.

I do have a real job, Janet. I blog for CMT.com. (Or gush about my favorites, as you call it.) And on top of that,I have a real job at a real newspaper, too. I am the country music critic for the Chicago Tribune. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

this music selections for college football sound more like a prelde to a weeding than a football game. Who picked this stuff, OBAMA or some other wimp? Last year’s was great, this year it is depressing rather than high energy. Get with it ESPN.
