Can a Duet Really Do It?

Posted: August 7th, 2009 at 10:58 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Can the freshly crowned winner of CMT's Can You Duet really perform immediately after being named winners? I mean, won't they be too overwhelmed to sing? I guess we'll find out Saturday (Aug. 8), right after the show's big season finale. It's down to two twosomes: JB Rocket and Steel Magnolia. And the winning duo will head straight over to Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon right after the announcement. The only problem is, if you want to see the winners perform live, you really should get in line early at the Wildhorse. Hopefully, you'll be through the doors in time to watch the broadcast when it begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT. And you'll have a spot up front for listening to all that good country music.

This thing was taped and decided weeks ago. That’s one reason I can’t really get into the show - I know that the decision on the winner has already been made. I’ve watched just a bit of this season and feel that the two finalists, JB Rockit and Steel Magnolia have the best sound of the group.

My family and I have watched the show from the beginning. News flash. I would 100% pay to see J B rocket in concert and by a CD. 25 % for Steele Magnolia. Sorry, think Scott made a big mistake but only time will tell

JB Rocket have a much more country sound than Steel Magnolia and I would have loved to see them win. I really liked the songs Steel Magnolia did tonight, but think they are much more blues or rock. Meghan has a killer voice!!

Well, Wynonna, I don’t know how you got your information but last weeks promo for this weeks finally had pics of The final 2 Duo’s singing in the clothes they were in tonight. I knew What Meghan was going to have on and what her hair was going to look like before the show began. Last years winners were announced online before the show - I did not not look this year I did not want to know. But I don’t Think that it was live tonight. Either way - I would buy either duo’s CD. And I liked what Scott said about “Having” JB Rockets phone numbers…

I am watching Duet now (west coast) and winner has not been announced yet, although it has been on this site & others. That goes for IDOL, I know ahead of time each week who the winner is going to be before I’ve watched it.

I would not walk across the street to hear Steel Magnolia in a free concert if they were giving away free water and I was thirsty. OK, I might walk across for the free water if I could find some ear plugs. There is nothing original about them. Name - stolen from a movie. Her hair - from a bleach bottle. Their sound - a compilation of the bands whose cover tunes they have sung in the bars. They were picked to win weeks ago while she was singing so flat it hurt my ears. Funny, JB Rockit kept getting nailed for being too mainstream - but there was really only one duo with a unique sound out of the top ten - Ryan & Avalon. But once again the Xerox beats the original. Sickening.

What a shock NOT. The fix has been in for Steel Magnolia from the start. We stopped the tivo after they sent home our favorites 3 weeks in a row. They boot The Shea’s and the Stella’s and keep Ryan and Avalon? I agree with Jeff, wouldn’t go if it was free. Just thought I’d check online what i already knew, the judges were going to give to SM

I believe both finale groups did an awesome job. I live in the same town as Jonathan from JB Rocket and have heard him sing since he was a very little boy in church and community events. JC you did Lenoir NC proud. Just like Eric Church from our area, you will go a long way. Keep the faith!!!

From early on, it was obvious from Scott’s comments and body language who was going to win.

I was very disappointed that the Stellas were sent home. I do like Steel Magnolia and JB Rocket but I wasnt much of a fan of Ryan and Avalon. I definitely think The Stellas should have got one more week and Ryan and Avalon should have went home. I believe that when you have children and already have a place in life to care for your children and work to make ends meat then you are less likely to go after your dreams. Maybe I’m in the wrong but that’s just my beliefs.

Love both duos…. congrats Steel Magnolia! It is obvious that you have a passion for the music. You have been working hard and waiting for this a long time! Can’t wait to buy your first record. I already bought your first single! Enjoy the moment and know that everything comes from God!

Great job JB Rocket! You should be SOOO proud of yourselves! Can’t wait to get your first record too! Bought your first sigle already! Keep singing and know that you have a great fan base who can’t wait to get more of you!

I was sure Steel Magnolia was going to win. Love JB Rocket too! Do you think Steel Magnolia are a real couple though? Why does he have on a wedding ring? She doesn’t seem to respone to him. It just seems one sided. Does anyone else see it? It maybe she’s just cold that way.

  • Diana says:

    Posted: August 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

SM has been a couple for several years. I don’t fing Meg cold to him at all, thats where they get their sizzle from. The song Here Comes Love was written by SM, I loved it! Ive rerun the show 5 times and each time after they sing that, I say aloud, I love that song!!! Hard to get out of your head lol. I loved these 2 from the git go and was glad they won. That said, JB Rocket did phenomenally well considering they havent sung together but a few weeks before the finale. I think Scott is going to sign them too. We have so many male duos already, but the Rockets have a bit of an edge to them that makes them a bit different. SM is unlike any duos, imo, and I love their chemistry and Meg sure can sing and Josh is a studmuffin, like Naomi said lol. I think Scott will sign A and R, thought I always felt she was singing flat a lot.

Scott promised JB Rocket a contract with Big Machine Records a few weeks back.

So, I imagine that they have already signed the contract and are working on their first album, too.

CMT is actually owned by the MTV outfit. That’s why it seems to be going the way of the original TNN, The Nashville Network, which is now the Spike cable network.

Most of the prime-time shows on CMT are not even related to Country Music now.

I’ve very disappointed but not surprised that SM won. I didn’t like them the whole way through. Where is their country sound? Can you say blue jeans and boots? What’s with all the glitter and short skirts. I have no plans on buying their CD and wouldn’t take it for free if offered. They don’t belong in country music. Scott mentioned Janis Joplin. Hmmm.

JB Rocket were great. Would buy their CD in a flash. Already have Rory and Joey’s CD (LOVE IT) and just bought Caitlin and Will’s a few weeks ago.

Avalon and Ryan, boy are you boring to listen to and Avalon sounded flat every song. Glad they went home.

While I still enjoyed the performances this year, Can You Duet was clearly not a competition. Scott was the only judge with any power (which must have driven Naomi crazy!), he decided early on he wanted Steel Magnolia with his label, and we just spent two months watching a big promo disguised as a reality show. Last year the fans voted and ended up with a fantastic new artist. This year, I don’t see Steel Magnolia ever getting beyond their little niche. It’s a shame, because this was a fun show last year; now it’s just another marketing scheme.

i don’t remember that the fans voted season 1 either. personally, i like it better this way. producers and powers that be just get ticked when the people they want to win don’t. remember all the hullabaloo when kris won ai this year? the people in charge of all the entertainment shows just pretty much ignored him and had much longer and more interviews with adam. the having “the american people” vote is just a sham to get people invested in their show. and, then, they produce the best records for their fav anyway.
btw, i love, love, love steel magnolia. i love their passion for music and each other. i love their terrific singing voices. i love their quirkiness. i love both of their original songs. i love that they were always so grateful for encouraging words from the judges. these two will appreciate all that big machine will do for them in the coming years. not only am i going to buy their album, if possible, i’m going to go see them live in concert. from the first show, they blew away all other duos. and, there was alot of talent on this year’s show. jb rocket need to work more on their sound. i think they have a great future ahead of them. they just need to gel abit more. i agree that steel magnolia didn’t always sound country, but, have you listened to country music recently? it’s more middle of the road and crossover than country. (i prefer country, but, sm proved they could do that too–with the hanks williams number. but, i can’t condemn them for being one of many country acts that don’t have that country twang. just put a violin in their band, and they’ll be just fine.)
