Sara Evans Started Slow With Three Chords and the Truth

Posted: August 4th, 2009 at 9:43 am  |  By: Craig Shelburne

When Sara Evans issued Three Chords and the Truth in 1997, I crossed my fingers that she'd break through. I appreciated her straightforward, traditional country voice, although I wondered if her arrival in Nashville was about 30 years too late. At the time, she was saying things like she'd never buy a computer and that she'd always dress up like a star for her audiences -- funny how that turned out. Anyway, critics embraced the album, yet none of the singles fared well at country radio. Finally that elusive hit, "No Place That Far," ended up on her second album after she moved her music toward the mainstream and scaled back the retro look. I certainly don't hold that decision against her, but even now, Three Chords and the Truth is my favorite among her albums. Check out this vintage video of the title track.

As a huge fan, I am always hoping for a album from Sara with more Country and less Pop. While I enjoy songs like Real Fine Place To Start, Perfect, No Place That Far, and Born To Fly, my favorite album to this day is still ‘Three Cords & The Truth’. That album just fit her voice so perfectly. Sara, in my opinion has a voice that was made to sing ‘Country’. By the way, there is a really good song of her ‘Born To Fly Album’ that was never released called ‘ I Learned That From You’ which I love. It has a really good Country vibe to it.

What’s funny is I just found this CD buried in my closet and added it to my iPod a couple weeks ago. It had been years since I listened to it and it still sounds great. I remember George Strait endorsing Evans and Three Chords and the Truth, so I had to get it and hear for it myself.
I’ve distanced myself from Evans over the last couple years due to her evolution to a more ‘Pop” sound and her crazy family affairs. May it be fair or not, in country music it’s about as much character as it is good music and I’m just not comfortable with her anymore.

Love it! Nothing against today’s singers but the songs just are not like this one. There is such a overload of country pop right now and hundreds more rushing to join. Let’s get a breath of fresh air…and write some good solid songs that paint pictures and tell the truth. What about 3/4 time, steel guitar, violin and banjo thrown in. It that because today’s country and hundreds rushing to join, what a glorious day in country that would be!

Sara Evans is, and always will be, my absolute favorite country artist ever. Her voice is that of an angel’s… no matter what she sings, it sounds beautiful.

I just saw Sara for the first time this weekend at my county fair, and thought she was absolutely fabulous. What a spark she has when she hits the stage. I have always been a fan, but after seeing her live I am an even bigger fan!

I’ve seen her 27 times and met her about 15 and she’s truly PERFECT.

She should probably go back to this style, it almost looks like her run on country radio is up, where’s her new single on the charts? The slow start is a cause for concern.

She probably never should have left it. Even if she does go back to that style, how many of the fickle Mainstream crowd will follow her and try to find her music, since most likely it won’t be played on commercial radio.

Her days of being a Pop star are over. Simple as that. If she’s smart, she’ll remember her raising, and return to her roots.

..That’s funny that this is a vintage video to some…. A vintage video for me is Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant backing up Tennessee Ernie Ford..(check it out on youtube).. Anyway…I agree with solo. Evans TC&TT was definately her best CD. Her dreadful series of Pop records that followed proved what direction someone wanted her to go, and it payed off financially, which is what they were supposed to do. Hopefull now she’ll get back to her Roots and leave the Pop world behind, because they have certainly left her.. If TC&TT were released today either as Evans the established artist or as Evans the newcomer, it wouldn’t stand a chance on Pop Country radio. Maybe that will be her new direction.

To me, Sara can sing whatever she wants. If you look at all of her recordings over the last two years, and not just the radio releases, there is a mixture of songs. She has recorded the more pop-leaning “As If,” the gospel song “Just a Closer Walk,” the inspirational “Low,” and even a holiday song, the Elvis duet. To get a true flavor for the types of songs she sings, you have to go to her concerts.
