Taylor Swift's Abnormally Normal Life

Posted: July 30th, 2009 at 6:00 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Taylor SwiftHer latest MySpace video says a lot about Taylor Swift. And so does Taylor Swift's dad when he says into the camera, "You guys are weird."

And I mean that in a very good way. Swift is a textbook goofball teenager. In this seven-minute video of her summer shenanigans, she's dancing around a bonfire, chilling on someone's boat (albeit with the guys from Def Leppard), cranking Beyoncé's "Halo" in the car with her mom, walking up to a drive-thru window for burgers, questioning her fiddler Caitlin's bare feet in the city, dancing with a little girl at her bass player Amos' wedding, sneaking up on her dad while he shops for Izod shirts, going go-carting, acting out scenes from Twilight and telling her brother he's no good at music. All this set to the Mat Kearney's bittersweet "Closer to Love."

But while some people may just see a lot of clips of Swift's increasingly awesome life, I see the nuances that make her such a relevant songwriter. With this short video, you can see Swift's reality. I mean, sure, her airplane's nice, and she can get Gene Simmons on the phone a little quicker than most people could. But she's not a diva who is living on a compound with no one around her but hired help. What kind of songs would that inspire? None.

So Swift is living this life that so many of her fans understand. Because they're doing those same things. And I'm sure down the road when she puts pen to paper and writes songs about the days of bonfires and boats and brothers and bare feet, her fans will relate. Not every artist has to have life as a common denominator with fans. But from the looks of Swift's success, it sure doesn't hurt.

Loved the video and enjoyed your comments on it, Alison. I agree she is as normal as its possible to be and still be a superstar. One of my favorite parts was her dancing, with the little girl at the wedding and at her campfire dance parties with her band. Hope she keeps on being as natural and honest in her life and music in the future. I think she will.

Taylor is so weird and her vocals are off key. Maybe her Daddy is tone deaf. It has to run in the family.

    Another great story Alison!

I agree with Matthew’s comments - another great video produced by Taylor Swift.

Taylor proves every day that her talents are amazing for a typical “normal” teenager. When Sony hired Taylor at 14 as their youngest ever songwriter, it was a sound business decision. When BMR signed Taylor at 15, it was an amazing steal - one of the nation’s greatest singer-songwriters signed by a start up company - just awesome! And she producers her own music videos which are regularly played on all the cable music channels - this girl has no competition in America for what she can do every day.

Taylor Swift is our American Girl!

What a great blog Alison. You have great insight. It’s great to see written on CMT, my exact thoughts when I watched the video blog.

Taylor is the best artist out today and will eventually leave a huge mark on country music, all music. Time will prove this.

Taylor is the modern day version of the ‘beatles’

Taylor is going to be that huge. She will be named the ‘Queen of country’ one day, literaly.

Some might say she is a good entertainer and songwriter.
She is OK but she is not the best. And she can’t sing that’s a fact. Studio recordings might be OK with the help of the technic. But live she sounds bad.
Right now she takes advantage of her age.

I really can’t understand the hype.

Honestly who sounds like the children here Taylor’s fans or you Taylor haters that have nothing better to do in your free time but vome here and post your negative comments. Get a life. The reason for these blogs shouldn’t be for us Taylor fans to have to defend her it should where we can talk with other Taylor fans and why we like her. Honestly everytime i open a blog about Taylor Swift by the time i get through all thwe comment i have totally forgotten what the article is about cause we never get the chance to talk about the article cause we are always defending her. Come on look how silly you haters look.

Taylor Swift , the Jonas Brother and Miley Cyrus are pushed in the limelight so much that I would love to see them fall flat within the next year. Let’s see just how popular they are next year when they start waking up smaller children to fill their shoes for the money.

    Posted: July 31st, 2009 at 8:32 am

TSF19, I don’t hate Taylor and I agree that she is a big star. That’s not debatable. However, how she got there is, since she has a voice of a high school chorus singer. I don’t understand why not being able to sing is considered a bad thing. Lots of people can’t sing and they are very good people. However, they don’t PRETEND to be singers and ask Daddy the make their “dreams” come true.

  • theonewhoknows says:

    Posted: July 31st, 2009 at 8:33 am

TSF19, however there ARE a lot of people who do hate her. I’m just not one of them. I’m apathetic toward her. I really don’t care one way or the other, and since I don’t know her, how could I possibly hate her?

You know, people are allowed to post their personal comments, after all, this is a comment section, not a praise section. Yes, Taylor is very popular, but in the way that Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are. Hannah Montana just spent multiple weeks atop the country albums chart. Do you really think Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is going to be popular for many years to come? I don’t think so. The same goes for Taylor. If you look back through time there are a ton of artists and groups that were extremely popular among the young crowd. After 4-5 years, they fell off the charts and ten years later, you barely hear from them anymore. This will happen to Taylor. One of two things will happen. She will either continue growing up and be in her late 20’s still singing songs about high school love and teenage breakups, and maybe keep SOME of her young fans that haven’t moved on to the “next big thing”, or she will finally sing about adult issues, and lose all of her young fans. I am in the music education field, and this girl does not have the vocal talent to be a singer. Maybe with lots of training, she might be able to improve her vocals, but right now she just can not back her vocals on her cd up when it comes to live performances. Maybe this is why nearly every one of her live performances on tv include props, costume changes, and other silly things to distract from her vocals.

  • Mark says:

    Posted: July 31st, 2009 at 11:29 am

Go do a google search: “Taylor Swift can’t sing”. You will find there are tons of people out there who know that Taylor sucks at singing live, and that it’s not just the “haters” on CMT that feel that way.

  • b says:

    Posted: July 31st, 2009 at 11:57 am

I just saw Taylor Swift in concert to a sold out crowd of various ages. No her voice may not be the best, but it all depends on what the listener likes. Taylor is a country singer, not many country singers have what a “music education field” teacher should know, to be a “good voice.” There is a difference between Taylor and the Disney channel stars. First, her career was not launched by a TV show. Second, she writes, or plays a role in writing a majority of her songs. And lastly, she appeals to more than the tween crowd.

I love Taylor Swift or at least the idea of Taylor Swift, she’s relative and seems like the coolest best friend. I download music on limewire, and have not purchased an actual CD in 5 years. Theonewhoknows continues to disregard the main point of the blog — Taylor remains real, relatable and relevant to her fans despite her growing Superstar status — and instead uses the blog to comment on singing. Blog on Band Hero? Comment on singing. Blog on a home video? Comment on singing. But challenged to a debate as to whether the quality of singing or the connection with the artistr is more important, theonewhoknows doesn’t respond. Finally, ignoring the chance to hear her live and solo on the internet singing EXACTLY as she sounds on record (even on songs she didn’t write — just listen to “Untouchable” — thewhodoesn’tgetit dismisses her singing on the basis of a bus performance. Sounds like someone with an agenda, and an envioud one at that.

  • drdjwu says:

    Posted: August 1st, 2009 at 8:03 am

A happy person doesn’t spend so much time reading blogs about people that “can’t sing, can’t sing, can’t sing” in their opinion, then repeatedly dissing that 19-year old girl (who happens to be one of the most energetic, positive and upbeat artists on the planet and a great role model for younger fans. Then you talk down to those young fans. But once again you avoid real debate on her artistic merits. No, happy people don’t do those things. Jealous, envious people do though.

  • theonewhoknows says:

and people in denial of truth call the messengers names. As far as her artistic merits, I’ll post some information I have following this post. It’s not from me, it’s from a friend of the Swift family. Stay tuned.

  • theonewhoknows says:

    Posted: August 1st, 2009 at 8:26 am

I am from Reading PA and knew Taylor Swift’s family. She grew up on a small horse farm on Freemansville Road, not “Wyomissing, PA” like her bio insists. She moved to Wyomissing later on, right before she moved to Nashville. Trust me - there are NO horse farms in Wyomissing. It’s filled with big, expensive homes and mansions. Her house had an elevator in it, for christ’s sake. I’m sure they implied she lived in Wyomissing her whole life because it sounds more “country” (ala like “Wyoming”).
Taylor Swift has always had a luxurious and wealthy lifestyle… Her dad made his millions off being a stockbroker in NYC. Got her some sleazy junior “record deal” with Sony by the time she was 12, even though she had minimal songwriting experience, if any. A few years later she was getting huge endorsements by Taylor Guitars and appearing in Abercrombie and Fitch ads, years before she ever had a cd out, only being a tween at this time (ahem, daddy’s money). Her dad also at this time got her involved in the Britney Spears talent agency (you know, cause that’s so country). TRUST ME - SHE ONLY GOT ALL OF THIS BECAUSE HER FAMILY IS LOADED.
Ever wonder why she can’t sing for s— live? Here’s your answer. She is a joke around here (Berks County) to the people who truly knew her “abilities”. I’ve heard she is shunned around the musical Nashville scene as well. She attempted to get into acting before this too. Her family has sold her since the beginning. She also wasn’t really country off the bat. She was attempting to do more of a pop acoustic route until it was recommended by a friend to go country (I still have her lackluster demo cd laying on my shelf). She is Avril Lavigne in country boots….a man made product of the music industry.
STOP THINKING SHE IS A TALENTED SONGWRITER. She pays for it all people! This girl probably barely knows how to tune her guitar. “Co-writing” today is the equivalent of telling someone to write a song for you, footing the bill for it, and then slapping your name on it. This type of payola in the industry has been going on for years. It’s gotten so worse in recent years that I would compare it to the steroid scandal in the sports industry — all integrity has been lost. Don’t worry though, more and more people are realizing Taylor is a phony (her tone-deaf videos on youtube never lie) and more people are speaking out. I read an interview of her once where she stated when she was 11 her family drove down to Nashville and she walked down music row knocking on the doors of=2 0labels and handing out her cd, making it sound like she was a freaking cow girl. Puhhhh—-lease. Don’t EVER believe the hype.

Let me tell the folks who read this blog something about theonewhoknows aka Tru, he is a known basher who has changed his profile many times. He has been a 50something male from Nasville, a 22year old female from Georgia, and now he’s a 19 year old female. Who knows who he’ll be next. His main purpose at CMT.com is to bash Taylor. He says he’s a happy person but I don’t believe it. Nobody can be happy and feel good about them self if they have to resort to bashing and being disruptive. It’s more a cry for attention.

  • drdjwu says:

Oh,THEONEWHO(PRETENDS TO)KNOW, your facts about Berks County are also wrong. Wyomissing is a well-to-do suburb of Reading, PA, but it is a far cry from being the Main Line of Grace Kelly. Not so long ago, a horse stables and riding farm were right behind Wyomissing HS on the way to Lincoln Park. Freemansville Rd. in Cumru township, a short drive from Wyomissing, remains a rather rural area, bordered by farms, tree farms and a state park.

Taylor has never hidden the fact that she lived in Cumru and attended Wyndcroft School (nationally recognized for academic excellence) in nearby Pottstown prior to moving to Wyomissing. She won a state poetry contest at 11, developed poise as an Abercrombie and Fitch model, sang the national anthem before a Philadelphia 76′ers game at age 12. When she moved to Wyomissing, the kids made fun of her for being into Country music, going off to sing at fairs ,karaokes; they stopped talking to her, shunned her like a scarlet letter. She was only there a couple of years, pestered her parents to move to Nashville.( By the way, are these former 11- and 12-year old classmates the so-called “people who truly knew her abilities”? Gee, that’s compelling!)

Truth is there is no animosity toward her in Berks County, PA. The Newspapers write high praise, seem very proud of her. Early in her career, Taylor played a modest-sized venue in Reading, some of those same kids came to get her autograph. “I’ve totally let go of that grudge,” says Taylor. “They didn’t remember doing it … they were just kids!” Apparently 19-year-old Taylor is more mature and magnanimous than the haters on here.

theonewhoknows, the real comedy is YOU saying you never bash Taylor! What a joke! I challenged you to a debate as to whether perfect singing is as important as an artist connecting with the audience, and you respond with that ranting gibberish. That’s your debate? A bunch of unsubstantiated innuendo and mudslinging by some nameless creature you say is “not you” but a “friend of the Swift family”!! Do you know how absurd that sounds?

Sounds more like another jealous and envious person we know. There’s not one iota of truth (or logic) in any of it. Taylor’s Dad is well off. So what? You make it sound like he’s on the list of the nation’s 10 richest men! Is he daddy Warbucks or something? A lot of singers have a well-to-do fathers. How many of them have had 2 different albums achieve 20 weeks each at No.1 on the Country charts? Oh, yeah, NOBODY in this decade! Only artists to EVER do it were Garth, Shania and … TAYLOR!

I don’t much care for haters, and the fact is that this nameless poster sounds much like you using one of your other names; if not, it’s someone just like you, another person who is mean-spirited and envious that a child prodigy has so much more talent than yourself.By the way, bashers don’t have to use vulgarity, just being aggressively critical and negative will do, sort of like your July 31 comment above where you say, oh so sweetly, that Taylor is a “pretend” singer who asks “Daddy” to make her “‘dreams’ come true”. Gee, that sounds just like the “unknown” commenter, doesn’t it? And why would anyone save that vituperative drivel unleess they wrote it?

But you have something she wants. You’re attention. You give her all of that. The new Taylor Swift doll will be ready just in time for Christmas. Isn’t it nice to know that the obsessed filled hate and jealousy will continue through the upcoming holiday season? merry swiftmas!

Her newest video blog is pretty fantastic–all of them are. ha It looks like they are always having a great time! What better way to spend summer than riding around the US with your friends having bon fires in the parking lot and playing to 20,000 people every night. Her life is extraordinary; she is as well. Keep up the good work Tay, it’s fun to watch you having so much fun! If that makes sense. ha

    Cheers!

I am a fan of Taylor, and I love it how she makes all of these videos. I relate to her music so much. She does not sing about alcohol. I do not drink alcohol, nor ever will. She is just a normal American living her dream. Everyone has dreams, and she is just living hers. I am glad she is famous. She is a perfect role-model compared to Miley Cyrus or Britney Spears. I do agree that she has a little more pop to her, but I am not going to let that stop me from liking her. I also agree that fame has gone over her head. I was a fan of hers from the very beginning. I seen her twice in concert. She did not sing bad at all. I did not get to see her in concert this year, but last years CMA’s she did not sing well at all. It did not seem like her. Once again though, just because she does not have a strong voice, I am not going to stop liking her either. I have heard singers sing wayyyyy worse before. Everyone has just different styles and tastes in music. I think people just needs to respect peoples opinion and respect what they like.

I did what Mark suggested and Googled “Taylor can’t sing.” Wow, there are a lot of people who feel the same way I do. Kind of makes you wonder how she can be so popular when there are so many people who think she can’t sing.

One person said her voice was weak-sounding and that most of her songs don’t have any sort of demand for vocal ability.

Someone else said “She currently has the #1 album in the country, with her sophomore release Fearless topping this week’s Billboard 200 chart. So it seems a little weird to ask if anybody’s noticed that she can’t sing. And by that, I don’t mean that she’s bland or immature or incapable of connecting with her material or totally devoid of any personality whatsoever. I mean that she can’t carry a tune.”

And one other person said “Taylor Swift can’t sing live. That is the unfortunate truth after seeing her perform on the Country Music Association awards in November and again at the Grammys concert this week. She offered by far the worst performance at the CMAs with her take on her hit single Love Story. And at the Grammys, she butchered Brenda Lee’s I’m Sorry, which morphed into her own better sounding White Horse. This is not meant as any sort of personal bash against Swift. For non believers, check out the positive review given “Fearless”, although that review makes clear that her biggest liability by far was her singing. Swift does well on the CD when the pace is more uptempo. Her writing is of quality whether with others or solo. She deserves a lot of credit for that. But like the awards show and Grammy concert, when she sticks to ballads, she exposes herself badly as someone who is not a top notch singer. It really is amazing how poor the live televised performances were given how popular a singer she has become. And while we have not seen her live in concert, the reports are about the same from those who have.”

There are plenty more but I don’t have time to post all of them.

S, Taylor’s “take” on “Love Story” was one of the highlights of the show. Visually more interesting than any other number in the show, she also sang it flawlessly. I didn’t see the Brenda Lee tribute, but most reviewers felt she did poorly on “I’m Sorry” and then recovered brilliantly for her own song “White Horse”. The latter song being … a BALLAD, which, according to your review, should have “exposed” her badly.

Since you like to google .. and one assumes you want to be fair, and not just google negative stuff .. try googling “Taylor CAN sing”, which has far more entries than the negative one. Better still, google “Taylor Swift/ Untouchable”: On YouTube you will see her singing live , alone on stage with just her acoustic, and turn what had basically been a punk-rock song into one of the prettiest BALLADS you’ll ever hear — warm, intimate and compelling.Check out the rest of that live performance, much of it ballads, all of it compelling, and sounding almost exactly like her records.

And while you’re googling, instead of searching out negative comments by pretty much the same people you read on here, try checking out the most highly regarded critics and reviewers in the land. Google “Taylor Swift and the New York Times, the New Yorker, the LA Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer (where she just played) — you will find one rave review after another, most of them saying Taylor will be around a long time.

Taylor was ill at the CMA awards she had flu or something. but on youtube i once found a video of her singing live in a place with a very small audience and she sounded GREAT i admit she isn’t the best singer live but she isn’t bad either and she sounds great when she isn’t infront of millions of people live

OK!!!, no more excuses needed, TAYLOR IS A REALLY FANTASTIC SINGER!!!!!!! (Gee, yelling like that didn’t make the point any stronger , did it?) Oh, well, point remains.Taylor Swift is a terrific singer, live, on record, anywhere.

For proof, check out CMT”s latest feature on her, the Studio 3300 Sessions, where she performs 5 songs, definitely live and definitely great, maybe even better than the records. Nice work, Taylor, and kudos to you, both for your VMA nomination AND for becoming the only artist in 25 years to place a single in the top 5 on BOTH the Country and the Hot 100 Billboard charts!

drdjwu - thanks for mentioning the 330 sessions - these are even better than the aol sessions that Taylor did for her first cd.
If ever there is a defining moment in a career (even though it is only 3 years old) this is probably IT! I personally think the 330 will go down as the best ever by Taylor - this remains to be seen. But, I cannot wait for cd number 3!
Watch for a song titled “Deep Blue Tennessee” I am predicting bigger and better right now!

Taylor is the best. It is so cool that she is dating a boy from my home town. Who would have thought a guy from little Cambridge Springs would date a famous person like Taylor? I saw the pictures of them on FB. They are all the buzz in my hometown. So cool!! I looked up the guy in my brothers year book. His name is Ben Burdick and he is 26 or 27, not sure exactly. What they say is true, you can take the girl outta Pennsylvania but you can’t take the Pennsylvania outta the girl!

    Taylor haters, buzz off!
Who really cares how long her career lasts or if some people think she is not talented? So what! She made her mark, and is still thriving. Maybe it will last for her whole life, or maybe it will fizzle. I wager her career will be as long as she is willing to keep writing her great songs. Her talent lies in her ability to pen a song that resonates with her fanbase. The fact remains, she has sold more albums than all of you being critical about her. She is a real sweet person to know. She is dating a guy from my hometown, Ben Burdick and I got to meet them in Nashville. She is as sweet in real life as she is in interviews.
