What Would Taylor Swift and Jack White Sound Like Together?
MTV.com is reporting that Taylor Swift wants to collaborate with Jack White. And I am reporting that I think that could be very cool.
Lately, it seems like collaborations of country and something so far from country are becoming our new normal. Back when Tim McGraw did the "Over and Over" song with (gasp!) a rapper named Nelly, it really threw country fans for a loop. But by the time Alison Krauss and Brit rocker Robert Plant hooked up, the collective minds of music lovers seemed to have opened. So much so that Kid Rock recently made it known that he'd love to work with Martina McBride.
This Jack White guy that Swift gushed about was someone I'd never even heard of until he worked with Loretta Lynn on her Van Lear Rose album. It won a couple Grammys, one for the Lynn-White duet on "Portland, Oregon." And critics everywhere seemed to have the same reverence for this project as they ultimately did for the Krauss-Plant effort. There is definitely something to be said for the way two very different music styles complement each other more so than two very similar ones can.
Then there was White's stroke of genius when he put his other band, the Raconteurs, into a collaboration with Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe. I'm not sure what this all means for Swift: Would a collaboration with White would take Swift down a bluegrass path? Or would he have her leaning a little more in the direction of a garage band?
Either way, it's no surprise that Swift wants to try something a little out of the box for her next album. She told MTV.com why she thought working with White would be awesome: "I love his style. I love his writing, and I think he's an amazing player, too, so any kind of collaboration there would be really awesome."
But don't look for a Swift-White song any time soon. Swift said it takes time to make an album so it's not thrown together. "You know, what I love doing is taking a long time to put an album together, because you have these ideas that hit you in the middle of the night and you never know what you can write two weeks before you're supposed to," she said.

sleepy says:
I really love most of what Taylor does, and I’m sure this collaboration has the potential to be very good. That being said, I love most of all her early stuff when she was just starting, her first album and her solo acoustic renditions of her own songs and covers that she did. I really hope that in a year or two, Taylor comes back to that kind of sound and gives us an album with the kind of thoughtful lyrics she is capable of, and some wonderful more country-sounding musical arrangements similar to her first album. I favor that first album of hers over Fearless, although it is a great album on its own.
solongsowrong says:
So I wonder what Jack White has to say about it.
lola says:
Jack White has an awesome voice. I doubt Taylor Swift can match his talent. That would be a disaster. Loretta Lynn was awesome with him. There is no match.
diamond says:
I think artists that go to the next level and try something a little different is the best way to go about their next cd, taylor has so much she is way beyond her years and has so much to give with writing and producing a new cd!! go taylor you are going to keep breaking records!!!!!

countryiscool says:
But “it’s her dream” so she says for EVERYthing she wants.
Stew Marbles says:
Puke. Taylor Swift is NOT country. Jack White plays real country music, not weak pop music with a southern accent.
DC says:
I love Taylor Swift’s originality. She’s an awesome solo artist that isn’t afraid to try something different. I think at this point in her career she can’t do any wrong. Whether she works with Jack White or Jack Black, she’ll make it work and people are going to love it. It’s still very early in her career and I’m excited to see what the future holds for her.

If he’s smart he’ll do it.
solongsowrong says:
With the information available today on the internet, it only takes a few minutes to find out who Jack White is.
He’s been a feature several times on these very blogs, in fact. Type in his name on the search here, and check out his work with his band the Raconteurs, and their collaboration with Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe.
Love CMT says:
oh yeah yeah i know him :S
jamie says:
Taylor S. and Tim M. should sing together. That should be hilarious. Neither can sing a correct note and then everyone will realize just how bad they suck.
Amy says:
Jack White is part of the “White Stripes”. Taylor Swift isn’t even old enough to know this. She just wants sing with Artists that clout. She always seems to be a person who just wants attention drawn to herself. She’s not in it for the talent that’s for sure.
T J says:
She’s not in it for the talent that’s for sure. say’s Amy —–what are you trying to say?
The most talented and popular teenager in the industry today is Taylor Swift. I am not basing this solely on record cd sales and sold out concert dates.
Taylor has tons of talent - ask anyone she has done collaborations with and they will tell you. Ask anyone Taylor has opened for - George Strait - Tim McGraw - Rascal Flatts - Brad Paisley they will tell you about her talent!
Not in it for the talent?? that’s a joke!
taylor rocks says:
A lot of the above comments are great. But those of you who say taylor stinks and that she’s just trying to draw attention to herself, you are very wrong. It’s not her fault that her career has catapulted over the last few years. She is truly awesome! YOU GO TAYLOR SWIFT!!
Don says:
Taylor is for Taylor…if it’ll get her name in the news she’ll do it.
Music is second to her after fame. Sad
Jack needs to stay away far away.
Alf says:
Too bad Def Leppard didn’t stay far away from her.
what!! says:
It doesnt matter who ts sings with, SHE COULDNT SING HERSELF OUT OF A PAPERBAG!!!! She only does this for publicity!!!! She has to see her name in the news everyday!!!! What a spoil little brat!!!
bkb says:
jack white going from loretta lynn to swift is a joke. swift is not country and cannot sing or has the talent of loretta. stay away from her, she is a poor excuse for country, go to disney swift and bore them to death.
Alf says:
bkb said “she is a poor excuse for country.” I say she’s a poor excuse for a singer.
Julia says:
Why are people being mean..
Taylor has talent if she didn’t she wouldn’t be here.
She not one of those lil cleb girls who had help from there parents. Taylor worked/works hard to be were she is today.
Dan says:
“But it’s my dream!!! Whine!!! Daddy!!!”

darrel says:
I thaing taylor is soooo hot so don’t talk bad to her

If it wasnt for daddyswift paiding her way she wouldnt be here!!! She hasnt worked for nothing unless you call begging her rich daddy for paiding her way!!!!!!!
Doug says:
QUOTE: “Ask anyone Taylor has opened for - George Strait - Tim McGraw - Rascal Flatts - Brad Paisley they will tell you about her talent!”
Sorry, but I wouldn’t exactly go to Rascal Flatts or Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley to find out who has talent.
Jack White is one of the more innovative and impressive guitar players over the last 20 years. He shouldn’t even be recording in the same studio as Taylor Swift, let alone working together.
Also, for those of you who don’t know who Jack White is, lay off the country music. Please. That is embarrassing.
hello! says:
TAYLOR SWIFT IS AN EMBARRMENT TO COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S says:
Jack White is Renee Zellweger’s ex-boyfriend. They broke up a few months before she started dating Kenny Chesney.
DarkKnight says:
I think most likely Taylor and Jack White have already talked and discussed getting together for a collaboration. I believe they have already had jam sessions together, I know that he has played with at least one of her band members recently.
goldie says:
taylor is a young great talent in country music and is a very fresh and new sound it is really awsome and refreshing to here someone who wrote her very own songs that relates to fans sooooooooooooo much!!!!!!! taylor is the best!!!!

i know she rocks

Rocks and writes, but can’t sing
Redmaz says:
Interesting. I remember reading a while back that Swift wanted to do an Americana/Alt.Country collaboration CD. Maybe this is it. I’m wondering what White will do. Will he cash in on the cow, so he can continue to financailly do his own music? If he does, will he be considered a mainstream sellout? Or will he maintain his musical integrity, and tell the cash cow to go moo herself? As far as music being second to her fame…doing a CD with Jack White would not be the way to go. White’s music(collaborations)have very little commercial success if any. Did the “Van Leer Rose” project produce any mainstream success? Pop Country radio didn’t play this music. The only place the Lynn/White album got any recognition was in Americana/Roots, certainly not Mainstream/Pop.
Ham says:
Van LEAR Rose won a Grammy for Country Album of the Year and the collaboration on Portland Oregon won an additional award. The album was a huge commercial success and the Portland song had excellent cross over results on Adult Contemporary stations. It was not limited to being an Americana/Roots phenomena in which case, there probably would have been fewer sales and less recognition.
Taylor Swift is no league with Jack White. I hope he understands not to tarnish his reputation with the fad du jour no matter what her “fantasy” is. Money isn’t everything.
star says:
anything taylor does is great! her writing/her voice/producing/acting and so on!!! taylor will do just fine with white, she will make the song what she wants it to sound like and the words and no daddy didn’t buy anything!!!!!!!!! go taylor you are a great person and role model!!!! oh ya and a great singer for the type of songs she writes, taylor will only get better in the months and years to come!!!!
Redmaz says:
“Van Leer Rose” dominated the the Americana Honors and Awards show, before winning any Grammy awards. The Americana Honors and Awards nomination and wins are always a good indication of who will be nominated and win Grammys, and has very little to do with commercial success. “Van Leer Rose” was first and foremost an Americana Music project. If it had any commercial success, I guess that’s fine too, but did Pop Country radio play it?
Redmaz says:
…”Van Lear Rose”

my point taylor swift made herself known around the world where as i have no idea who half the other people are apart from tim mgraw and carrie underwood

I really am a HUGE Taylor Swift fan. Well, I Am One of her Biggest Fans. It will be awesome for her to do more music with people. I adore Taylor and her music A LOT. She is the greatest!!!
Love CMT says:
I live in England conutry music isn’t so popular here
theonewhoknows says:
love cmt, that explains it. If Taylor is the only “country” (ha) you know, then you need to treat yourself to real music.
Lisa H says:
This would be a horrible combination. Jack White actually has talent, and can sing, unlike Taylor.. who should stick to just writing songs. Her voice would be no match for him. Like someone else already said, Jack w/ Loretta was amazing!! Taylor could never compare.
Love CMT says:
she isn’t the only country artist i know
Love CMT says:
why is it everytime Taylor has a blog writen about her people star slamming her can’t you just leave her alone and leave these blogs to people that like her
Redmaz says:
Why? Because she’s a Pop Culture celebrity. Along with the praise and accolades, come ridicule, insults, rudeness, and discourtesy. It’s part of being a Pop Culture celebrity. From my observation, hatred for Swift in many cases is stronger than love of music.
Redmaz says:
Are you really that out of touch? That comment was offered up as a matter for debate.. Care to discuss it?
S says:
I’m not out of touch at all. You said it, now own up to it.
S says:
And just for the record you always say that my hatred for TS is stronger than my love for music. But if you’ll notice the only comment I made on this blog was about Renee Zellweger being Jack White’s ex … nothing negative about TS.
Redmaz says:
Own up to what? That Swift is a Pop Culture cash cow? Okay she is. It’s no secret, unless of course you are out of touch with today’s music scene. That’s not hate, that’s a fact. She decided to be a Pop Culture celebrity, by definition it’s her job. She’s making more money in the Pop world than probably anybody right now.. I don’t hate her for that. I think it’s great she can take advantage of the masses. It doesn’t matter if she can sing or not. I don’t listen to that type of music. If you could only differenciate between Pop Music and Roots Music maybe you’d understand.
Also there’s no need for you to defend yourself. You are quite transparent.
S says:
And I said I didn’t hate her I just didn’t think she could sing and you basically called me a liar. And now you’re saying the same thing that I’ve been saying all along. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
Redmaz says:
Ma and Pa Kettle listen to Clint Black….but not on the phone. “When I’m calling you who who who who who who……………………………………………”
S says:
I see that one of my comments was deleted which makes Redmaz’s response make no sense. It’s funny because the post that was deleted was just a copy/paste of one of Redmaz’s comments and their post is still here. I think whoever is monitoring this board needs to read all the comments and not just pick and chose which ones they want to delete.
Love CMT says:
Look just break it up and be quiet
T J says:
Swift’s self-titled debut CD, released 143 weeks ago (in 2006), also remains one of country’s top sellers, claiming the No.11 spot on the sales chart this week. Taylor is the only artist this decade to have two albums spend 20 weeks at No.1 on the Top Country Albums chart.
With her third cd release Taylor will start breaking her own records!!
Redmaz says:
Sorry but that’s not true. I can think of two artists instantly that achieved that goal. Slaid Cleaves for “Brokedown” in 2000, and Wisbones in 2006. Both albums spent over 20 weeks at #1 on the Country Album Chart. As did Dale Watson’s “Whiskey or God” and “From the Cradle to the Grave”. I know there’s plenty more too. Snider and Miller both come to mind as achieving this also.
Fearless is #1 in 2009 says:
The #1 Country Album is nice - but I just love anything Taylor sings. Her rendition of Run at the George Strait special was the type of song I hope she continues to sing for us. I wouldn’t mind if she put out an album containing other songwriters work. She did a great job singing Tom Petty’s American Girl.
Mandy Lynn says:
Taylor already sings other songwriters work .Songs by Liz Rose.
Theonewhoknows says:
Ok i do admit i am just plain jealous of her i do admit it’s a disease.
I am mean to her becuase my life in music never turned out well.
Alf says:
I see that someone else is posting under theonewhoknows’ name. Did they really think that we wouldn’t notice that they’ve capitialized the first letter to make it a different name and it’s really NOT theonewhoknows?
goldie says:
taylor awsome and this duet would be different and taylor does do things different but if she did the same thing as far as a cd goes or a song it would be really boring!! I say go for it taylor it will be great!!
Kelly says:
Ha! Jack & Taylor? Ha ha! Funny…
When I 1st started reading this i was thinking, “hmmm interesting. I’d be open to it since she already did something recently with another artist outside of country (a rap artist). I wonder what Jack is thinking though.” Then I got to then end of the article where Taylor states “You know, what I love doing is taking a long time to put an album together, because you have these ideas that hit you in the middle of the night and you never know what you can write two weeks before you’re supposed to.” That’s when I started laughing riotously. If you don’t know Jack, he is famous for fast song writing to keep music from being overproduced. He wrote “Fly Farm Blues” in 10 minutes on demand for the cameraman of the “It might get Loud” documentary and he produced the Get Behind Me Satan album in TWO WEEKS. Taylor Swift working with Jack White would be like a little girl in a princess gown getting thrown out into reality with her dreams of meeting prince charming (Remember the horror that came out of Ever After?). Would it be a disaster? Musically, I don’t know. It could probably be really good since they’re both great artists. But music can’t come til they get past the point of collaboration and I don’t know how well Taylor will do with that.
Kelly says:
oh… one more ironic thing. Jack White just did a spoof on the whole “Kanye interrupting Taylor during the VMAs” ordeal. It was pretty funny. Jack would make a good rapper if rap was only about grabbing your crotch.
But may I repeat again… Taylor Swift working with Jack White would be like a little girl in a princess gown getting thrown out into reality with her dreams of meeting prince charming… just like in Ever After. I really do hope I live to see this happen though. ANd I hope Jack will do it (even though Taylor is more pop than trad country as Jack likes). I really would love to hear what they produce.
Jackwhitefan says:
Seriously? Of course it wont happen anytime soon! No offense, but this is not anywhere near Jack’s taste! Don’t mean anything against Taylor swift, but thats just no blues, rock, country, or anything except pop. Pop Jack White? Hell no.
