Taylor Swift, Coming to a Band Hero Near You

Posted: July 22nd, 2009 at 1:41 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Taylor SwiftGuitar Hero's nice. But it's pretty focused on, well, guitars. And on hard rock. So if you want to play something a little more pop and maybe even a little more country, you will be very psyched to know that Taylor Swift's "Picture to Burn" will be one of the tracks on Band Hero, a new video game that's kind of a sequel to Guitar Hero. Band Hero will reportedly feature the same kind of drop-in and drop-out instrument game play that GH players know and love. There will be other songs from bands like Lily Allen, the All-American Rejects, the Jackson 5 and plenty more. It's slated for a November release for Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation PS3, which probably means a lot of Taylor Swift fans will have a very merry Christmas this year.

I can understand the Jackson5 and Michael Jackson but honestly a white trash country pop drama queen named Taylor Swift. Her voice is so horrible it makes my young daughter cringe.

That’s cool that Taylor’s going to be in the game. But what about other Country stars like Miranda Lambert or Carrie Underwood?

And based on the trailer on the website, the developers for this game weren’t very creative anyway. It’s the exact same thing as Rock Band but with a different name.

Taylor has proven one thing to her fans - her songs connect with them and they can relate. She has also proven to complainers and nay-sayers you don’t have to be perfect to succeed in the music industry. Get used to that.

Boy…I’m glad I stopped by this blog. Guess what direction this will be going? After all this time there still seems to be some confusion. To “Kate”, first of all this is not just a country blog site by any means. you would have to visit “Amber Waves of Twang” or “Twangnation” or “Twangville” for that. Now, I would like to discuss what you call “Pop” music. You see Pop Music is not an individual genre of music, it’s an industry consisting of many genres of music including Rock, R&B, Rap, Hip Hop, Adult Contemporary, and yes even COUNTRY. Now your opinion may be she’s not country, however in the overall picture of today’s music scene, TS is indeed a Pop Country singer. If you are interested in learning about the rest of today’s music scene, including AMERICANA/ROOTS/RED DIRT, please let me know. I will try to help you. Thanks

I have seen Taylor at numerous functions…there have been times I even thought she sounded halfway decent, but then I noticed when the song was over and she started to talk the microphone was off. You can see the panic in her eyes when this happens. Same thing happened at CMA Fest–she got up from the piano she was pretending to play and stopped moving her mouth, but the song was still going. Once again, she had a look of panic…almost to tears this time. I will give her this. She does do some live singing–and it is noticeable. When she sat onstage with her guitar and did an acoustic song my two daughters(both accomplished singers) put their hands over their ears because she was so off pitch.
My other thing is how can you take her seriously as a writer. Yes, she does write songs–give her that; however, she has written so many songs about being in love and having her heart broken, etc and she is only 18(19)? She wrote some of these songs when she was 12-14. I’m sorry, but if she is writing from experience then…well–not good. I know my girls wouldn’t have had the slightest clue about losing love at that age. That would almost be like a teen singing Trace’s “You’re Gonna Miss This”–it’s not realistic.
I’m not a hater–I just think there are so many talented singers in Nashville, that don’t get their break because they don’t have the parental $$ to back them. It should be based on talent…so sad for those great kids that are trying to live the dream, but don’t have the cash. And quite honestly, everything else aside, I am sick of hearing about her!! And I bet half the singers in N’ville are as well.
Just had to voice my opinion on her–saw her too many times–and she was awful each time. I remember when she sang for fourth of july in N’ville and people we walking through the streets with hands over their ears(honestly). Voice lessons might be something for her to spend some big bucks on. (BTW–saw her because she was playing with other artists–not by choice)!!

Very interesting post countryFAN. It doesn’t come as a big surprise to me. It’s sad to think how many talented people there are in Nashville who can’t get a break while she’s being prompted like she is when she can’t sing worth beans. Even my grandkids who are 11, 13, and 14 years old can’t stand her and don’t understand why she’s so popular.

  • Redmaz says:

    Posted: July 23rd, 2009 at 3:53 pm

So your grandkids hatred for Swift is stronger than their love of music too? Way to each your children well. Why don’t you introduce tham to all these talented people you speak of who can’t get a break in Nashville? Or have you? Who are they? You seem to base everything on how popular or unpopular a person is. Is that your idea of success? Your hatred for Pop Culture is much stronger than your love of music, and it starting to rub off. Like I said, you are really no different than the fans of Pop Culture. Half love it, half hate it…all are a slave to it.

Well, I have GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS…

GOOD NEWS is: I believe we have N-O-W reached the point where all these “haters” (i.e. bright green with envy-ers?) on here have truly become a sort of semi-hilarious comic relief. (…Buncha comment-leavin’ clowns and comedians!) :P ‘Cause NOTHING any of ‘em are saying has even an ounce of credibility or believability left…

…And actually, what’s happening is that the more they write on here to try to knock her down, the funnier & more desperate sounding it gets.

Hmmm… I used to mind, because I know that Taylor doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment, but is actually rather amusing to me now to think of these people sitting at their home computers, type type typing away, believing that some of their blog-bullying & BS is gonna negatively affect her in ANY WAY. LOL.

Sorry ‘gang.’ Is the harsh reality. :) Can keep rollin’ thru your list of talking points & potential put-downs if that (somehow) makes you feel good, but just know that no one here is taking you or your (pathetic) posts seriously. Not really. Certainly, not anymore.

Ok? So, we’re crystal clear here? (Good.)

And now, the bad news: Oh wait, there is none. :)

ps: Suppose ya’ll (haters) can keep hangin around if you want… We (fans) will genuinely look forward to the next article talkin ’bout all the good stuff Taylor is doin and the positive impact she is having…

…and THEN we’ll all sit back and get a good laugh @ your next round of jokes, clowns. So keep em coming!

(OR just go away. That’d be cool, too.)

The people on here that think Taylor is a pop culture fad are crazy. She has broken records left, right, and center..there is NO WAY she is going to just “fade away.” Just look at the last album she released..there is definite growth in her as an artist, both musically and lyrically. You know she was also a co-producer on her album? A lot of people out there that can sing can’t do anything BUT sing. Stop thinking the music industry is ONLY about being able to sing well. I’d take someone like Taylor, who has the whole package, any day over someone that can only sing well. If she is a fad, why does she have so many prestigious industry awards as well as fan-voted awards? Many critics praise her as well. Her success lies in her charisma, stage presence, and connection with her fans. Her ability to pen her own songs, play the guitar, and sing. Is she the best and strongest singer out there? No. But like I said, many people out there that can sing can’t do anything else. There is no denying that Taylor has an ear for writing hits. She also has an ear for music production, which is a great skill to have. The singers that I speak of can only lend their voices to the production..they have no creativity in the areas of music production, arrangement, or writing. A song with words and a simple guitar backing it is just the bones of the song. It takes talent and skill to be able to bring that song to life with a clear vision. Taylor is also 100% involved in her live shows. You people need to give her A LOT more credit than you are right now. All you have to say is that she is a weak singer..I saw her live in concert a few months ago and she was phenomenal. It was 100% live, and even I was slightly surprised at the strength and steadiness of her voice. She barely hit any sour notes, and she was doing more than just standing or sitting there singing. She also has a wonderful personality..one of the nicest celebrities you will EVER meet. She is SO grateful to her fans..you will never hear stories of her turning down fans for autographs or photos.

By the way, she doesn’t only write about heartbreak. Her song “Fifteen” isn’t about boys..”Breathe” isn’t either..”Tell Me Why” was written about a boy, but it can be interpreted as a song about anybody. Same thing with “You’re Not Sorry”. “The Best Day” is clearly NOT about boyfriends..it is about her mother and family. “Change” is not about boys either. “Tied Together With A Smile”, “A Place in This World”, and “The Outside” are also NOT about boys. “Cold As You” could be interpreted in different ways. Taylor writes her fair share of songs that have nothing to do with relationships, and she also writes songs that could be interpreted in different ways. And even so, so what if she likes writing about love? What artist DOESN’T? And you call her immature? Wow..relationships and love is the number one topic any artist writes about.

I didn’t say anything to my grandkids about Taylor. They discovered all on their own that she can’t sing. In fact, they were the ones who brought it up to me, not the other way around. Posted: July 24th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Scarlett, allow me to compliment you on your well-articulated observations. I’m just going to add that, by my count, out of 24 songs on the original versions of her first two albums, there are only 3 songs which are truly about being heartbroken (”Cold As You” and “White Horse”, both achingly beautiful and emotionally mature, and the last-minute “in-your-face” addition of “Forever and Always”. In between, there are songs about a friend with bulimia (”Tied Together With a Smile”),a song about being drawn away from the “perfect boyfriend” to someone who exasperates you but makes you feel completely alive (”The Way I Loved You”), and probably the best song ever written about being “Fifteen”.

These are not bubblegum or Disney songs. Writing ABOUT juveniles and teenagers doesn’t necessarily make the writing juvenile, and Swift’s creations are anything but simplistic. Like a seasoned pro, she uses a bridge to transition the final verse of “White Horse” from “dreams crushed” to “moving on, time will tell just who has fell and who’s been left behind”.

She is a strikingly VISUAL writer whose songs transform easily to videos (the one for “YOU Belong to Me” is almost a movie in itself!).”The Way I Loved You” could be the theme for “The Notebook.” Taylor has an eye for detail and the ability see poetry in the commonplace. Has any other songwriter EVER used the shimmering glow of the city sidewalks and streets after a fresh rain (”Fearless”) as a metaphor for the bright promise of a brand new relationship? Even an unreleased song, “I’d Lie”, is remarkably clever, contrasting lines of banal real-time action (”He cracks a joke, I fake a smile”) with the much “more real” thoughts in Taylor’s internal monologue about how much she likes this guy. This technique sets up all sorts of dramatic tension what’s said and not said, not to mention comic interludes. At one point she even wonders if her dream boy is very bright (”Shouldn’t a light go on?”). A guy could never write this material (he’d write, “she has a faraway look, maybe she’s thinking something, oh well…”) but women, infinitely more attuned to subtle and instinctive undercurrents, certainly get it.

Which brings me to the main reason Taylor is truly unique and important — I believe she is the first artist to REALLY speak for young women. REAL women. Not Disney caricatures, and not some 40-year-old guy’s notion of how women feel. Country has been an old boy’s closed society forever. Rock has catered to head-banging teeanage BOYS (Beavis and Butthead forever!). Women had to act like one of the boys or worse to get attention.

I think Taylor is loved by young women from 8-to-80 (young is in the mind) and a lot of men, too, but I know there are so many mothers who are just thrilled that Taylor is there for their young teen daughters, at an age when peer pressure is just enormous and parental guidance is often undercut by MTV-”reality shows. And someone on here has the gall to call Taylor “white trash”! Better look in the mirror.

Fine, but the science says she isn’t. Doesn’t follow the score, projects from throat instead of diaphragm, doesn’t support breaths, has minimal range, has no vibrato. Tell me which part is good.

  • drdjwu says:

    Posted: July 24th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

theonewhoknows, now I see your problem with Taylor. You want to make singing into a clinical procedure … a science, in your own words.

But Taylor is an artist whose main concern is to share FEELINGS and to COMMUNICATE with her fans, and she succeeds in both cases. That’s the kind of singer she is — not a clinician, nor a belter, just one who has conversations with the listener, and whose voice is at its best in smaller settings. (Check out YouTube to see her live, acoustic and mostly solo performance on STRIPPED, where her singing is intimate, very expressive and quite pretty.

Because she has become so huge — you must just love how “FEARLESS” went BACK UP to number one on the Country album charts, the same time week “YOU BELONG TO ME” was voted the most popular song of ANY genre on AOL this year — Taylor has wound up playing record crowds in massive arenas, and those shows have received overwhelmingly positive reviews by people who actually critique music for a living, so apparently Taylor is learning to cope.

Finally, I don’t even CARE for pretty crooning all that much! Give me Cash, Dylan , Hiatt, Buddy and Julie Miller, Levon Helm back after throat cancer, even the Kings of Leon. Keep your clinically perfect singers, they just bore me.

    Posted: July 25th, 2009 at 2:50 am

Shelley, why would you drive to another state to see someone you so obviously dislike? And pay those prices? DO YOU, LIKE, STALK HER OR SOMETHING?

And how is she overrated? Sales? Oh,guess not! She was the biggest-selling artist in America, period, in 2008, and “Fearless” had the longest stay at #1 on the Billboard 200 of any album in the last decade.

Milestones? “Love Story” was the first Country single in history to top the Mainstream top 40.

Awards? Nope, she pretty much won all those, too.

Attendance? Nope, she’s breaking records all over the place.

But hey, these are all just real facts. Let’s not let hard facts get in the way of opinion. So here’s one from Kenny Kemp, who reviewed last week’s TS show in Charleston, W.VA for the Gazette.

HEADLINE: Talented Swift wows sold-out Charleston crowd.OPENING paragraph: With her stunning voice and songs she writes herself … she is country’s sweetheart … also proved she knows how to rock. MIDDLE: “you could feel yourself hanging onto every word she said … I liked how she made this concert experience like nothing I had never seen.” CLOSING: Swift showed how she deserves to be where she is in her career…she makes you feel a connection with her.”

Love, it’s not nice to tell someone to shut up. Poor upbringing I guess. I gave you the criteria for a good singer. Tell me how she is a good singer when she can’t meet one single metric.

Love, so she writes songs from the heart and has sold millions of records and sold out concerts. She still can’t sing. Scientifically proven, you just refuse to accept it.

Just my humble opinion, but it is refreshing to have a girl that is not trying to be an h bag like some other famous girl artists under 20. Finally a real role model for young girls. And her talent level singing and song writing is second to none. I would not recommend singing pour some sugar on me again but other than that she has been unbelievable. Look forward to more GREAT songs, and I am 36 male.

No CMT, selling millions doesn’t mean anything except that you have a lot of marketing and promotion. Your demographic target is kids, you’ll be an easy sale and kids like to spend money on music. Adults have responsibilities. The youngsters always sell well, e.g Miley, Jonas, Britney, HSM, and so it goes.

I think what some of the critics are missing (besides just pure hating) they claim scientific reasons why she does not sing well. They are leaving out the subjectivity of sound. The aforemntioned girls that were successful were able to use a juggernaut like Disney to get them started. I first saw Taylor Swift on CMT sining at the Concert by the river with her littl brother I think, singing Tim McGraw. To me that is talent. Critics don’t agree fine.

But two things. One do not compare her success to the Disney girls. She never had that type of platform to start from. And please do not compare CMT with Disney since I am sure it is not even close how many young girls watch CMT compared to Disney shows.

And two, sound is very subjective and an overwhelming amount of people seem to think she has a GREAT voice. So moral of the story, stop the hating!

I think its great that she will be featured in Band Hero can’t wait til it comes out. Now to comment on all the negative posts. Taylor is a great artist, so her singing isn’t the best in the business so what. If you like to listen to her listen to her if you don’t then don’t. Its as simple as that. theonewhoknows you don’t have any right to say that other people are being rude when you are also being rude. Taylor is not a Disney creation so she had to work to get where she is at today and you have to admire her for that, following her dreams and making them come true. Young people do love Taylor cause they can relate to mit the most but i wouldn’t say that they are the only ones that like her, i think some people just don’t want to admit they like her. Taylor will probably be the best selling artist again in 2009 so you should just get use to seeing her she is only going to get bigger.

Well, this just in … The north dakota state fair attendance record is obliterated as more than 50,000 fans show up for the taylor swift show. None of the fans, nor the fair’s promoters (the latter busy counting record proceeds) expressed even a remote concern over any scientific tests for taylor’s singing.

To me, Taylor is like Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. If you’ve ever heard either of them sing then you’ll know what I’m talking about.

S, what ARE you talking about? If this is a criticism of Taylor’s singing, you should know that even Taylor will probably jump with glee to be compared to Joplin and Dylan.

Janis was the original blues-belter, the one whom all other down-and-dirty blues singers are trying to imitate. Bonnie Raitt, Faith Hill, Jennifer Nettles — they’d all love to be able to match Janis! Nobody ever did it better.

Dylan, meanwhile, has been described, by prominent critics, as “the most influential cultural figure alive”, a “genius”, and “the greatest writer … since Shakespeare.” You can’t listen to modern pop, folk, rock or even a lot of country without hearing Bob’s massive influence in the song constructions, in the lyrics and in the vocals. When Dylan first started becoming popular, critics derided his singing, compared it to a rusty nail scraping over barbed wire. Didn’t stop him and before you knew it, EVERYBODY was trying to sound like Bob.

Don’t be surprised if you start hearing a bunch of Taylor sound-a-likes on the radio soon.

  • snl says:

I think barb is a jealous person yes she supports a ok artists but taylor does have the whole package, she relates much better to her fans and does not care so much that it’s about her it’s about taylor’s fans! not like the person you support.
