Zee Avi Has a Light Touch With "Bitter Heart"

Zee Avi was born in Borneo and raised in Kuala Lumpur --- yet I found her in Nashville last week opening for Pete Yorn. Cradling a ukulele, the petite 23-year-old sat near the foot of the stage and offered a few tunes that called to mind Peggy Lee. You rarely hear jazzy singer-songwriters accompanying themselves on ukulele, so I was certainly intrigued. Unfortunately the chattering crowd drowned out her delicate music, but she seemed to be enjoying herself nonetheless. Oh well, at least I have this fun, fashion-forward video for "Bitter Heart" to remember her by. I'm digging the trumpet solo, too.

Very interesting and unique voice. I would much rather listen to Zee Avi than the blonde Pop brigade of Hough, Pickler, Swift, and Underwood. Am I forgetting one? Probably more than that.
