Tootsie's Orchid Lounge Bans Guns

Posted: July 17th, 2009 at 9:22 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

It's not the law. Just their own personal preference at Tootsie's, the legendary Nashville honky-tonk on Lower Broadway. The owners there have made a decision to be a gun-free establishment. But since the state of Tennessee now allows firearms in bars, this is something the Tootsie's people had to take into their own hands. So they'll be frisking patrons with metal-detecting wands. And I can't say I blame them. Alcohol and guns are just not a good mix. So if you want to go listen to some good country music at one of Nashville's most beloved bars, just leave the gun at home.

What in the world is the state of Tennessee thinking by allowing guns in bars in the first place. Thats ridiculous. Although I would guess that most people who go to Tootsies arent packing a gun anyway.

I like guns as much as the next person, but guns and alcohol don’t mix well.

Kudos. Now get rid of the cigarettes and you’ll have a great venue.

The law passed allows ONLY those persons with a handgun carry permit to be in possession of a gun in a restaurant (the bill was intended more for the likes of Friday’s and Ruby Tuesday) where alcohol is sold, but ONLY IF the individual is not consuming alcohol. It applies in bars because they are seen by the law as primarily restaurants, and those in Nashville have to have a certain level of food sales in order to maintain a license to sell alcohol for on-premises consumption (although, I think this requirement is very loosely enforced).

The constitutionality of the new law is currently before a court, but the court declined to prohibit the implementation of the law this week.

Once again we are the laughing stock of nation. Ever answered the question “do people wear shoes in tennessee?” Isn’t the public school’s ranked like 49th too. What company in there right mind would ever move here? Seee you later progress.

Thanks you, CMT. Keep the guns at home, we don’t need that in the bars.

Being from Memphis it is especially scary. haha

    Cheers!

I have been to Tootsies many times and it is a hellava great place. Packed to the brim with people every night of the week. Lots of drinkin and singing but I always thought I wonder what they would do if there was a bar fight? Some peeps get really rowdy & I am soo glad to hear no firearms in the bar. I LOVE this place. !!!!
