Defining Moment for Summer Songs

Posted: July 8th, 2009 at 11:02 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Kenny ChesneyQuick. Before they name some Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga song as the ultimate summer song, go give the Chicago Tribune a piece of your mind. Tell them that summer anthems are best when they are country anthems. Like Phil Vassar's "Six-Pack Summer," Alan Jackson's "Summertime Blues," Brad Paisley's "Mud on the Tires" or Rascal Flatts' "Summertime." Or pretty much any song Kenny Chesney has released in the past five years. Not songs like "Waking Up in Vegas" by Katy Perry or "Right Round" by Flo Rida, as they've suggested. The story says that "summer songs are the soundtrack to freedom and vacation, camping grounds and hot pavement." So it has to be a country song, right? Post here or over there and tell them that the song that will define this summer is "Out Last Night" or one that's equally as breezy.

The very best that defined summer and so much better than the ones you mention was the summmer of 1999 and hearing Tim McGraw’s Something Like That.

Even 10 years later it still is one of the top 10 songs played on radio and very much held up.

JMO. Not being a KC fan - most of his music is about the beach and all sounds alike. I’ll take any old country song whether it be spring, summer, winter or fall.

I went to the Chicago Tribune site but didn’t recognize any of the songs let alone the artists. On the page where you could vote for your favorite summer song I chose “none of the above.”

I like Kenny ok, but am burnt out on his beach drinking stuff- like his old stuff better, or even the reminicent
tunes. Love “crank-up-the-volume, open the windows, tunes of Sugarland. I also like the ones mentioned; Flatts, Tim,
    Vassar, Paisley, and Jackson.

The ones that remind me of summer are:

    Kenny Chesney - Summertime
    Alan Jackson - Summertime Blues
Kid Rock - All Summer Long

Forget Chesney. Try Zac Brown Band’s ‘Toes’.

Um Alison I hope you know Rascal Flatts does not have a song titled “Summertime”. If you are referring to their current single it is titled “Summer Nights” and does not mention the word ‘Summertime’ at all. Next time, please do some research…even if that means listening to the lyrics a little closer. Thank you.

I always prefer “Watermelon Crawl” for a summer song. It has all the right things for summer; July, Georgia, dancing, alcohol, and of course, watermelon.

I actually would say “LoveGame” and “Boom Boom Pow” are actually two songs in the running for my summer song. I like them. xD

    Please don’t hurt me!

I must be old because the songs that remind me most of summer are Beach Boy songs.
