Jake Owen Needs a Tour Manager. Are You In?

Posted: July 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Jake OwenThis is the truest test of artist loyalty: You love someone's music so much, you'd actually want to work for them.

Jake Owen is going to hire a couple of fans to do just that. Granted, it's a short-term job and, technically, you won't get paid. But if you like Owen and his sexy Southern drawl, what better way to get close to the music than to be at his beck and call for 48 hours?

He just called me from the road to tell me about this contest he's doing with LongHorn Steakhouse and said, "We wanted to give something away to the people who've been following us. It's cool for them, but it's cool for us, too. People don't realize what goes on in this life on the road. Like how we stopped at a truck stop in the middle of the night last night and I bought a Triski [scooter]."

But it won't be all 4 a.m. shopping sprees. The two winning fans, plus their guests, will fly to Nashville for the bus call. Then they will sleep on the bus bunks while it heads down the highway, then get up the next day and get to work. "It's not slave labor," Owen told me. "But they will have to round people up for the meet-and-greet, deal with the band and their gear -- that kind of stuff. It's not a contest to be a fan for day. It's definitely a working day. "

Owen also said he likes doing out-of-the-ordinary things for fans because it shows them he cares. Plus, he's a fan, just like everyone else. He said, "If I'd gotten a call to go out on the bus with George Strait or Alan Jackson, I would've lost my mind."

“Owen also said he likes doing out-of -the ordinary things for fans because it shows them he cares.”

I wouldn’t doubt that he cares about his fans, who after all, make his livelihood possible. But this contest is sponsored by a chain restaurant. Longhorn’s website prominently features Jake Owen. Owen, at a minimum, is getting a lot of publicity from the restaurant out of this.

I wonder if he would do such a thing if it wasn’t backed by a corporate sponsor.Maybe he would, but its fair to take such statements with a grain of salt. This is a marketing stunt as much as a way to show that he “cares.”

Actually, the contest was his idea. =)

Jessica - the contest may have been his idea but that doesn’t mean he would have done it even if he couldn’t find a corporate sponsor.

    Of course he might have.

I don’t think Jake needed this contest to show his fans how much he cares cause he does that on a daily basis…check out what he does with his twitter..just like he did last night he is always thinking of new ways to interact with fans. He goes above and beyond. Besides when Jake told everyone about the contest he seemed pretty damn excited for it and I’m sure the people who do win are going to have an amazing experience.

I wouldn’t spend a day with Jake Owen if you paid me a thousand dollars.
