Todd Snider Strives to Be an Optimist

Todd SniderI get a kick out of Todd Snider and I've been enjoying his new album, The Excitement Plan. I think I'm drawn to him because he's extremely clever but not quite a smartass. (Well, maybe sometimes ...) Honest, heartfelt songs like "Slim Chance" and "Greencastle Blues" are delivered in first-person, although Snider writes in the liner notes that they're written about somebody else. No matter, the lyrics still suggest that Snider strives to be an optimist. In one song, his therapist tries to help by encouraging him to just do the best he can. His dry response? "I was hoping for something more specific." In other words, he doesn't have it all figured out, yet he admits he's as hungry as the next guy for money, compliments and publicity. In fact, that's the name of the song - "Money, Compliments, Publicity." I'm also pleased to report that he holds his own on "Don't Tempt Me," a feisty duet he wrote and recorded with Loretta Lynn. So here's a compliment - nice work, Todd - and hopefully this bit of publicity will earn you a little money.

Thanks for posting this blog about someone/something else. From my observations, there are possibly hundreds of people here that have been asking about some different blogs for a change. I’m sure there will be hundreds of hits on this blog soon. New music by Todd Snider, and a new duet with Loretta Lynn? Just what everyone has been looking for. Something different. thanks

Todd’s great, and totally underrated. I wish Craig would post more, since he really knows his music and doesn’t just recycle tabloid gossip.

Hi Linda. You think Snider is underated? How so? He’s #5 on the Roots Rock chart. He went from 18 to #4 on the AMA chart in just two weeks, and Loretta Lynn agreed to do a duet with him. I think he’s doing pretty good.
