A Father's Day Concert, All Grown Up

Before I got this gig writing about country music, I spent about 12 years writing about Gerber Baby Food. I wrote TV commercials and print ads, and I thought all about babies, full time. And we used a lot of fathers in those ads because nothing is cuter than a dad with a baby. So now when I think about Father's Day, I still picture dads with babies, even though I know those babies grow up and hopefully have a lifetime of memories with their fathers. That's why I wish I could be in Nashville on Monday night (June 22) for this Father's Day show at the Listening Room.

Rory Feek (of the "Cheater, Cheater" country duo Joey & Rory) will be there performing with his daughter, Heidi. And he let me know what fatherly lessons he's trying to pass down to her. "My father taught me the importance of having a passion and a dream and also how important it is to pursue that passion. I hope if Heidi has learned anything from me, it's that literally anything is possible if you have a dream and you're not afraid to go out on a limb and chase it," he said.

Rory's been chasing those singer-songwriter dreams for a while and has done quite well. One of the songs he wrote for Crystal Shawanda, "You Can Let Go," is probably one of my favorites about fathers. So if those lyrics are any indication of Feek's passion for fatherhood, this show would be a must-see for the occasion.

Along with the Feeks, Vince Gill and his daughter, Jenny, will be performing as well as producer-songwriter Buddy Cannon and his daughter, Marla Cannon-Goodman. And to sweeten the deal, a portion of the proceeds will go to Youth Villages, a nonprofit group that helps emotionally and behaviorally-troubled children and their families.

I didn’t realize that Rory had a hand in writing “You Can Let Go.” Interesting. Sounds like it’ll be a pretty cool event this evening.

Love Joey and Rory. Went to their Bibs and Buckles concert they had near their home, and it was a wonderful evening. They sang many of their hits and had many great songwriters there performing with them as well. Had a family and friends feel to it. Hope they go far, they certainly are talented enough. I only fear that all these new wave (not so talented) kids will hog country for awhile. Lord knows why.
