The Other Winning Moments
I refuse to add to the overwhelming glut of reports on the winners at last night's CMT Music Awards. I will, however, give you my two cents on the awesome things that happened at the show that didn't really get awarded.
Like "Thug Story." The fact that Taylor Swift's "collaboration" with T-Pain was packed with self-deprecating humor was a huge relief to me. I was crossing my fingers that we wouldn't have to take her seriously as a rapper. So hearing, "I'm so gangsta, you can find me bakin' cookies at night/You out clubbin', but I just made Caramel Delight!" was just perfect.
And then there was the Dierks Bentley kiss. At his urging, actress-comedian Melissa Peterman did a karaoke take on his "Sideways." Then she kissed him. From where I was sitting, it looked like it was more of a real kiss than a peck on the cheek. She's got balls.
Those were the funny bits. But there were also musical moments that made me proud to be a country fan. Watching Keith Urban join Jason Aldean for "She's Country" so rocked my prediction that the show would be predictable. Then there was Toby Keith doing "God Love Her" with a brass section. I'm usually not a fan of brass because it tends to make everything sound like a Chuck Mangione song. But Keith pulled it off big time. And I thought Darius Rucker looked very much at home on the giant arena stage(s) doing "Alright." All those Hootie years apparently paid off in stage presence.
Lastly, Sugarland. How can they do the B-52s' "Love Shack" with the actual B-52s, do it so well and have an arena full of country fans hootin' and hollerin'? Only in America, only in country music and only if you're Sugarland does the far-fetched idea turn out so fabulously.

HELLO! says:
ANOTHER BLOG ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IT WAS AWEFUL LAST NITE!! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Corbin Hosler says:
The show was terrible. CMT is a giant commercial for Taylor Swift, as is Allison.
bkb says:
i don’t care how funny you thought the rap thing was, it did not belong on a country music show. it was just another way for swift to perform. enough of this non talented little girl.
Redmaz says:
“She’s got balls”? Really? Tea and baggin’ down the road he goes.
scott says:
can anyone show me one note of country music in last nights show? where was king george, haggard, jones. when one of these die there going to make them out to be bigger than elvis but now they wont even invite them to the show…thats cold
J Smith says:
Why do we continue to mix the poetry for the illiterate,i.e (c)rap, with real music? The show was a bit dissapointing. The incredible talent this town has and we got a Taylor Swift show. Young people are not hte only music buyers!!!
Redmaz says:
Nothing cold about it. Haggard and Jones haven’t been a part of Pop Country in a long time. Legends like Haggard and Jones are respected and honored in AMERICANA music. That’s part of the reason I support it. Follow the genre and you’ll find the music.
CJ5 says:
Taylor needs to make her own genre or go to Disney. Last night there was not one country song played.I am with you Scott. Show us some Country from last night. I am sad because I use to love Country Music. It was just like it died last night.
SMJ says:
Taylor and Kellie need to go to MTV and leave CMT alone!
Florida Boy says:
So, CMT, this is a “winning moment?” Big A$$ Chain - how nice. The entire evening was more like a huge frat party rather than what should have been an enjoyable FAMILY oriented show. Oh, and had I known it was a Taylor Swift concert, I wouldn’t have bothered. Give me Martina, Reba, Shania, Dolly, Carrie - real talent - anyday!
Redmaz says:
So CJ5, do you feel today’s Roots Country is killing Country music too?
Michael says:
Last night’s show sucked tremendously. The little teeny boppers are sickening. They can’t sing and have no talent whatsoever. I’m sick of hearing little gumball songs about Taylor’s boyfriends. It’s gotten way too old. The young singers were terrible last night. The only performances that were good was, Toby Keith and Keith Urban. Reba McEntire should’ve been on the show singing her new single, “Strange”. She would’ve shown the young untalents how to really sing and perform exceptionally well. Faith, Tim, Martina, Brooks and Dunn, Garth, Trisha, and George Strait should’ve been performing as well. Then the show would’ve been great. All of the producers of last night’s show should be fired and very ashamed of themselves!!!!
sam says:
The show was terrible– what was it — the Taylor Show? People go on and on about her– like she was the only one there. What about the other artist– what about a show with some class– please– rap, dreams, ugh– the horror of it all. What were they thinking??? Oh!! let’s do a HIGH SCHOOL REVIEW? What has happened to COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Debbie says:
It was a great show. Love Story was by far the best video and deserved to be the WINNER for Video of the year! Way to go Taylor.
Redmaz says:
To sam, Country Music is just as good as ever. Just because you don’t know about it doesn’t mean it does not exist, but then again you think Toby Keith is good. Do you know he did a Rap song too? I think it was called…Talk About me.
Justin says:
Folks, I thought the show was lacking last night, too. But it was what it was, and that’s what CMT has become. Everything you saw last night was what CMT thinks country is today. That’s why they gave Jamey Johnson his award outside before the show started.
You guys are wasting your time with CMT if you’re looking for or wanting something else.
Sarah says:
Redmaz, you are constantly hating on today’s country music. Why do you come on this website & post a comment on every blog then?
Gabriel A Williams Sr says:
I returned to Country Music because of CMT. Now, I’m leaving it because of it’s promotion of Taylor Swift (No Talent), Pickler (Minimal Talent), and the un-ending, Trailer Park Reality TV. I can’t even defend Country Music to my children.
What happened to the real Country Music?
Redmaz says:
To Gabriel A Williams Sr, Today’s real Country music is called AMERICANA/ROOTS COUNTRY. If you are interested in learning about it and some of it’s artists, let me know. I will help you. Thanks.
Lisa says:
The only two female performers they could muster were Kelly and Taylor 3 times. They showed Taylor rapping with T-Pain and singing (I guess that’s what that was) with Def Leppard. No Reba. No Miranda. CMT let Martina McBride sit in the audience without a performance slot and Alison thinks everything was ‘fabulous’. I think it was a disgrace.
God, I miss country music. You know the genre where the artists really sang live and didn’t rely on a tape to do it for them.
Holly says:
James Otto is all that this girl needs, I love him so much!!! (big smile)
God bless you and him always!!!

Seward Harvey says:
After watching the CMT awards, I have to say, if I had to rate them on a scale from 1-10, 10 being the best, I would have to work very hard to come up with a 3, probably a 2 would be more deserving. This is SIMPLY NOT COUNTRY and it stinks !! It is ROCK and the two do not belong together. If Rock want their own reckonization, fine and dandy but leave Country out of it. They are two very different genre’s of entertainment and should stay that way !!!
EVON says:
COUNTRY MUSIC IS A EVERY DAY HEART FELT EMOTION THAT PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO WHEN THEY NEED TO DEAL WITH THEIR OWN FEELING LET’S REMEMBER OUR ROOTS,, PEOPLE WHOM GAVE IT BIRTH, THE POWER OF EACH AND EVERY SONG WRITTEN FROM THE HEART ABOUT SOMEONE AND EXPERIENCE THAT LIFE HAS DEAL THEM.LETS DON’T LOSE THAT PURPOSE OF THE REASON GOD GAVE THIS TALENT THERE ROOM FOR EVERYONE TO SING IN THEIR OWN WAY AND A PLACE FOR EACH ONE LET’S NOT CROSSOVER EACH ONES TALENT POP,HARD ROCK,RAP,HAS A PLACE IN MUSIC COUNTRY HAS IT’S PLACE AND ALL MUSIC IS A SPECIAL GIFT EACH ONE AS IT’S OWN TALENT AND SPACE
Gabriel A Williams Sr says:
Read the blogs. A majority don’t support the Swift, Pickler, movement. I suppose you like Obama! What’s happened to America?
Noah says:
You guys are so comical. Why hate on Taylor? the pop country has been around since Tim, Faith, Shania, etc changed it.. Carrie is no different.. she is just as pop country as Taylor and Kellie and Juliane and the rest of the newer country acts. The rap comic skit was just that a ‘comic skit’ you guys are using something hilarious to put digs in at a 19 year old young lady? How sad is that?
Alison you can bet 90% of the people giving you hateful remarks as to ‘how bad the show was’ is just disgruntled carrie fans because Taylor has taken the lime light off of carrie.
IMO I think it was disrespectful that cu didn’t even bother to go support the other artist just because she wasn’t going to be the center of attention.
Before anybody says well it’s her Mom’s birthday.. I say bs.. I gurantee if cu was up for 4 awards her Mom would have celebrated her birthday right there in Nashville..
You go Taylor! We loved the show! & congrats on your 2 wins, I’m glad my whole family can say we are fans of yours! My daughters look to you as a role model and you have yet to disapoint them. My one daughter is now taking guitar lessons and the other is taking piano.
What a great awards show CMT! I get ‘YO’ humor! LOL seriously, great show.
Sarah says:
You didn’t answer my question, Redmaz.
Mike in TX says:
Noah - I don’t think it’s a hate on Taylor vs. a love for Carrie. The people you mentioned like Tim, Faith, Shania, Carrie, actually can sing live and have real talent. That’s the difference (in my opinion), but I can’t speak for everyone. So Carrie wasn’t there. So what? Neither were Kenny, George, Reba, Brooks and Dunn - who were all nominated as well.
oldschoolcountry says:
after 24 hours of reading comments and watching the Encore presentation to make sure i was not over reacting,i am reminded of the old saying “if it looks like dog crap and it smells like dog crap, then it must be dogcrap” .CMT(CRAP MUSIC TELEVISION)
iMack says:
You won’t find out what the people want by reading the blogs. And you should completely ignore some of the trolls who comment on blogs here.
If you want to know what the people want, count the votes, the record sales and the money.
The majority DO SUPPORT the Swift / Pickler / Underwood / Garth / Bentley / … nearly every singer who makes a living as “country” star today … “movement.”
If you don’t like it, listen to RedMaz and make some movement over to Americana. There’s some great music there.
Listen to the Grand Ole Opry on the Web. Or if you’re really as “pure country” as you make yourself out to be, crank up your AM radio after dark and listen to WSM. If you live in the South, you can probably still pick it up.
I happen to love Pickler and Swift — makes me feel young again. They’re both sweet girls who love their fans. I know more about Kellie than Taylor, and know she has a great deal of respect for the roots of the genre.
Not every song they sing is a country classic. But then not every movie I see is a Bergman or Fellini classic, either.
If you love music, listen to it, don’t whine about it.
trufanofcountry says:
CMT awards mean NOTHING. They are fan voted for VIDEOS and have absolutely nothing to do with music….in any genre. They are simply awards to make the perinneal losers feel good.
sis says:
Taylor Swift(I call her no talented, can’t sing, big baby).
Someone needs to tell that girl to get a life, who cares about your boyfriends and if they broke up with you, get over it. My favorite singer is Carrie Underwood that girl can sing. Where were Reba, Martina, Miranda,Carrie, and Julianne last night now they can perform and sing. Take that no talented CRAP they had on there last night off. Taylors video with t-pain, was a disgrace to country music. Taylor is a disgrace to country all on her own. Taylor Swift, nicknamed TRAYLOR TRASH!!!!!

I am sick by this dung that is called “Country Music”. MTV is doing everything they can to undermine the hallowed halls of the Grand Ole Opry. This is just a sign of the times a reflection of the mindless drones that are following the spin doctors straight to HELL.
Johnny and Waylon are rolling over in their graves. Shame on all the real country artists that won’t step up and take on the labels and tell them no more crap like tonight will be acceptable again. You want Rock, POP, RAP then go listen to it. Don’t hand me a hamburger and tell me its a chicken sandwich. COUNTRY IS COUNTRY leave it the f@#$ alone.
GOD BLESS JAMEY JOHNSON AND RAY SCOTT ! ! ! !
CMTV CONSIDER YOURSELF ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST. WE WILL TAKE NO MORE. “YOU TELL ALL YOUR LITTLE FRIENDS I”M COMIN AND OUTLAW COUNTRY IS COMING WITH ME”
WE ARE HERE TO TAKE BACK THE COUNTRY….
Devon says:
I find it amazing that Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney…etc.. Did not even show last night, on a fan based show that has won them many awards. What? If your not nominated for more than you think you should be you dont show up. I understand that they might think this award show does not count, but to the fans who buy their cds and concert tickets i took it as an insult!!
sis says:
To Devon, So what they were probably busy or they weren’t invited, get over it.
Julie Walker says:
CMT’s phone number is (615) 335-8400. Not everyone who listens to country music is 17. I understand children liking this kind of music. I love all kinds of music but if you really know country music and where it came from then you will know that last night was not country. Call CMT and tell them about it. By the way, did anyone notice that many country music singers were not present? Makes you wonder what they are thinking. Probably the same thing we are.
Mike in TX says:
Reba, Brooks and Dunn and other nominees weren’t there either. I would call them SUPER STARS. Sometimes they simply can’t make it for their own personal reasons. So what?
sis says:
Did anyone notice when Taylor was singing, her music got cut off. She CAN’T SING.
roxz says:
Where did the Country Go in CMT???? It should TMT Taylor music television
Devon says:
So what?, half of modern country music stars were all busy?, when its ironic that alot of the newcomers were nominated. I just find it amazing to look and see that most of the people who were not even nominated for awards were their and most of them said they were their for the fact it was a FAN AWARD SHOW!!!! I think that Even though my one vote may not Count I will remember next year those who never show if theya re not nominated or performing
Julie Walker says:
Just making an observation that Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Montgomery Gentry, Lee Ann Womack, George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, Blake Shelton, Joe Nichols, Dwight Yokam, to name a few, were not present and/or did not perform. The list should include all the great artists of country music. I’m old enough to know that this too will pass. It is another phase in country music. It happens around every 10 yrs or so. Let’s pray things turn around soon and CMT gets back to doing their job!
sis says:
Thank you Julie Walker, your telling the truth.
Redmaz says:
To Julie Walker, it’s great that you love all kinds of music, I do too. I was wondering who are some of your favorite Americana/Roots Country artists? I’m also a big fan of Red Dirt Music(as a genre), who are some of your favorites in that genre? Just curious to what else you’re listening to besides Pop Country. Thanks
Mike in TX says:
Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Wynonna, Randy Travis, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Hank Williams, Jr., Shania Twain…to name a few more Julie! Preach it, sis!
Holly says:
Seriously, guys. Enough with the whole “Taylor isn’t Country, the awards last night stunk, I hate CMT” crap that I’ve been reading for the past 24 hours. You can’t change the past. It’s okay to not like what happened, but Taylor Swift isn’t stupid enough to do the exact same thing next year; it would be too predictable. I happen to really like her, whether she’s Country or not. And a lot of her fans like her, too. And it’s obvious that Ms. Bonaguro does, too, so commenting on her blog that you’re sick of hearing it is idiotic. She was just putting in her two cents about it. If you don’t want to read her talk about Swift, then just DON’T READ IT! What a novel idea!
If you want Country music to change to the music it was 10, 20, however many years ago, then start making records that fit your ideal description. And if you can’t make those records, then listen to the ones that do. Get over your ideals about Country music changing. It’s the way it is right now; if you don’t like the new stuff, just don’t listen/watch it. It’s not hard. Don’t sit there and complain about something you can’t change. We live in America where change is something that isn’t too hard to come by, so go out there and do something about it.
I, personally, enjoyed all of the performances that were highlighted in this blog, and I’m happy that some (like Jason Aldean’s fun performance with Keith Urban) finally got some attention.
iMack says:
No, sis. The truth is it would have been nice if everyone who’s anybody in country music got to sing at least one full song along with every up-and-comer out there. But that’s not possible.
The truth is Carrie wasn’t there out of choice. She chose to spend time with her mother.
The truth is Carrie has dominated CMT for a few years — they even did a “Carrie Music Television” day not that long ago. But now they’re making room for the next big thing, which happens to be Taylor. Just like Carrie took over at the top from Gretchen who took over from …
And the truth is, in a few years, the next “next big thing” will come along, and Taylor may want to sit out an awards show to spend time with her family, too. And the trolls will be whining on this blog, if it still exists, about how crappy the new “next big thing” is.
The truth is that there are three awards shows a year, and it would be boring if they all three showcased the same people and music.
The truth is that most of those people Julie mentions are probably feeling blessed they came along before every wacko/psycho/loser with a computer could tear them down behind the Web’s shield of anonymity as if these singers weren’t even human, just because they happen to be successful doing what they love.
The truth is if all these ignorant idiots really loved music, they could turn off the TV and listen to a CD, the radio or a Web stream. And that’s what I’m about to do.
Good night, sis. God bless.
Lisa says:
Frankly, Noah - this has nothing to do with Carrie Underwood. You are sadly missing the point. Few would be here today objecting to Taylor performing ONCE even if it was a country pop song like Love Story or whatever her current single is. The objection is that she was allowed to perform three times while actual country music stars (who can sing I might add) sat in the audience and watched. Then to top it all off she doesn’t even attempt to show even the smallest ounce of respect to the genre she supposedly represents. Instead she raps (very poorly) with T-Pain and sings (very poorly) with Def Leppard. Give me a break! I am fine if this is going to be renamed the MTV awards, but last I checked they’re still calling it Country Music Television. They couldn’t find another female artist to perform. Not Martina (Yeah, cause I am sure she didn’t want to promote her new album). Not Julianne. Not Leanne. Not Reba. Not Dolly. Not Gretchen. Not Ashton. Yep, none of those girls wanted to sing. The only only two they could find was Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift. It is a joke. And that has nothing to do with whether Carrie Underwood was in the building or not. CMT should be embarrassed. I doubt they are but they should be.
missmycountry says:
CMT is going down the tubes. Very sad. Can’t believe they had to bleep out so much of what people we saying also. With the country going down the tubes, I thought at least CMT would hold true to their values. Boy was I wrong.
Lisa says:
I think is very telling that so many of country music’s real superstars like Reba didn’t come. CMT should be asking themselves why not.
Lisa says:
I bet Heidi Newfield and Leanne Womack didn’t want to sing either. I sure they said, no just give T-Pain my spot.
Diana says:
I have to echo most of what is posted above. It was indeed the TS show last night. Taylor is gifted, not in singing, but to give her so much time on one show and overlook others was a mistake, imo. For all the stars that were not there last night, for whatever reason, one chance to stay at home probably feels good when you are gone as much as they are, so that didn’t bother me. Fan voted awards are not indicative, imo, of what the fans think of the singers but is indicative of which fan bases organize the best and vote the most. I enjoyed Joey and Rory, Gloriana, but most everyone else was really off pitch. I had never heard Keith Urban or Brad sing so poorly so I’m thinking there was some kind of problem with hearing themselves since so many were so off. The 3 country awards shows are highlights for me each year, but Im thinking I will skip this one next year as I got on my pc to play games, while listening last night and muting in some instances. Enough with non country crowding in on our awards shows, they have enough of their own. Lets make ours country again too, btw.
jan says:
I felt sorry for Miss Swift-the performance with Def Leppard-was that supposed to be comical?
I saw her as a young girl trying to look like a sexy rock and roller and failing miserable or as a girl having fun at a teenage pajama party…it was really painful to watch.
ann carter says:
I don’t think taylor can sing, but just like obama the people voted I just hope they wake up from the dream before it’s to late.
Bill says:
Wow, after reading the comments I thought mine was brute but you previous posters are right on about the show, it sucked! CMT take note! And all you labels want to know why you aren’t selling records, read these comments, these are the reasons why!
Bill says:
It was just pathetic. Plain and simple. Kind of like old people trying to act and look young when in fact they should just look like themselves. Being cool is being yourself, simple. When we tune into a country awards show we want to see what…..country, not rap, not grills, not stupid written jokes, not actors, not models, not dancing with the stars stars, we want to see people who can sing, really sing, not with the help of a pitch box, but really sing. Not bubble gum, real country. Again, it was just pathetic.
lauren says:
Wow……. i think Taylor put us all in a dream during the show last night and I still haven’t awoken yet…………. At least I don’t think?!
Bill says:
Oh, and a big high five to Lee Ann Womack for telling it like it was last night! I have always been a fan but I am a big fan now! You go girl!
redbomber says:
True, Taylor is a very talented songwriter. That is where it ends. She could make a career just doing that; so why don’t she? Please take some of your money Taylor and take about 5 years of singing lessons…then come back if you improve greatly. CMT listen to fans over the age of 19…Promote singers not teen heart throbs.
Bill says:
and oh yea, Taylor, are you reading this fan blog and taking note. You need to back down some, get out of our face so much. There is such a thing as to much of something and last night you were just plain ole over the top made me turn my tv in my face to much!!!! You are cute, you are a good writer, you are not a bad singer but not a great singer and your timing breaking into the industry has been just as important as your people behind you, but, give us a little break, you might find that the public will take you better in small doses!
LINDY says:
i wondering why the cmt awards don’t even let taylor swift sing love story at the stage?!
Sharon says:
What is wrong with you people who think Taylor Swift can sing? She can not carry a note and what’s up with her winning best video of the year. That was a joke.
Alison W says:
I agree with the lack in regard to female performances. I would have liked to see Miranda, or Lee Ann Womack, or Little Big Town, and come to think of it, Carrie Underwood was nowhere in sight. Why was that? Weird. At least she can actually sing live. I cringed a couple of times during You Belong With Me.
Landon says:
In all honesty, you cannot blame Taylor Swift for the [CMT] produced Show. She was not in charge, nor was it her idea to perform three times. And she actually can sing, but the hype of live performances causes her to lack from the excellent quality you hear on her CDs, along with the fact that those performances were all unique and new to her.
I’m a teenager, and I happen to like Taylor Swift, but I also happen to like a few other country singers too. What makes you older bloggers think that just because you have more age on me allows you decide what is and what isn’t going to be classified as country music. Taylor Swift is a country singer, whether you like it or not. Just because a few of her songs stray from the basic classic-country sound all you heh..(rednecks) seem to love, doesn’t make her a pop-princess.
The CMT Award Show was great, and I hope CMT doesn’t regret having it. As for the people who question what country music is today, country music is always changing, and that’s always how its going to be. New generations of styles are filtering in and they’ll take their spots along with other classic artists in country music.
Taylor Swift is a great songwriter and singer, and she has a lot of talent. Watch as she develops into an even better country singer in the years to come. Remember, just because you’re not into her style of singing, doesn’t mean she’s a bad singer. We all have our likes and dislikes, but we don’t have to bash the hell out of a singer just because he/she isn’t our favorite. Taylor does attract more young viewers than old, but keep in mind that she still is YOUNG, and that’s completely normal. Country Music doesn’t have an 18 or older section.
-Try being more optimistic instead of a bunch of debbie downers. CMT still has it, and they’re doing a great job. Amazing Show!
Ty says:
COUNTRY MUSIC——-I think it got a SWIFT kick to the curb during the show. It should have been called THE TAYLOR SWIFT SHOW. I am a Keith Urban fan who liked Taylor also–but I will not pay another cent on her albums or go to another concert that she appears in. My friends and I are going to support Carrie Underwood from now on. NO-we were not Cu fans before but we sure are now!!
Andrea says:
I didn’t like this show at all. Although I’m a fan of nowadays country pop rock charts music. I like Dierks, Keith, Jason, Sugarland. There were just a few moments I liked.
I didn’t like the performance and song choice of Sugarland.
And it was way too much Taylor Swift. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate her. But to give her that much time and space, let her perform three songs was way too much. It seems to be a Taylor show not a CMT Award show.
robdodge68 says:
I have found the problem with CMT. Look at the bottom of this page.Country Music Television Inc. a Viacom company. A Division of MTV Network . I hope someone from CMT is reading this, go country or go some where else. And taylor if your reading this please put down the mike, shut your pie hole pick up your pencil stay off the T.V.
Taylor Rocks 13 says:
Sorry to tell everyone this but without fans there is no music buisness the more fans you have the more you sell the more you sell thae better off you are.You can have the best voice and if you can’t sell it it’s useless. So yes fan voted awards are important maybe to the loosers they are not.lol We all need to invest in the kleenex buisness because with all the crying going on here tehy will sell a crap load.Oh and by the way TAYLOR ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joan K says:
Put a lid on it. The last time I heard this type of diatribe was from rap/pop fans after the Grammy awards. That bunch were having fits about the country stars appearing on the show. I go back a long, long way and since the 50’s pop and country have mingled, so if you aren’t happy with it, don’t blame some little girl who youngsters admire. You just have to let go graciously and give over to the next generation. The one statement which is completely off is the moral issue. To my knowledge this girl has always held the high ground. So cool down, take a deep breath and laugh. It’s good for your blood pressure.
Always Right says:
You want to put an end to it? Don’t support these people. Don’t buy their records. The major labels created this mess and are dying so let’s throw them in their caskets. Illegal downloading isn’t killing the industry, it’s homogenization of the music. People are getting fed up. Sure there are a number of idiots that will buy whatever is put out, but let’s put a stake in the heart of the major labels and the radio stations that play the same 6 songs over and over again by letting our voices be heard!
Explore other options to find great new music, like the internet. There are alot of great indie country artists out there that you will never hear on mainstream country radio because they don’t write and sing soccer mom garbage.
Look for them!
Kathy says:
This was not a country music show. It reminded me of the movie”Pure Country” and “Dusty’s” complaint about what he was being made to do. This was a rock show and who ever was on sound system needs to practice…It was awful. I probably won’t be watching this one again…or CMT for that matter. So obvious who owns it now.
Diamond says:
It was “The Day the (COUNTRY) Music Died” for me. The show had a lame host, a lousy sound system, the ‘usual suspects’ down in the pit (junior high, high school and college age girls waving and singing along, hoping for some face-time), good sports in the audience like Martina and other truly talented performers (who were of course not allowed to actually perform) and well, it was a terrible representation of country music all around. I agree some of the legends were not there–but they don’t all do music videos, so that’s okay, I guess.
If it’s supposed to be a celebration of country music videos, let us hear some of the people who did great videos–Alan, Blake, Miranda, Carrie, Kenny, etc. I don’t expect to see/hear George Jones or Merle Haggard on the CMT Awards, but I also shouldn’t have to suffer through T-Pain and Def Leppard, and yes, the way past-our-prime B-52s.
This show left me scratching my head and covering my ears. Give Taylor a sitcom, Pickler a talk show, and let the country folks back into country music.
sis says:
I think the radios are already dead, from what they’ve been playing.
kayefun says:
Alison, my TAYLOR SWIFT compliment of yesterday got lost in the glut is correct……CMT may finally have gotten caught in some small part with the ‘backlash’ from exceeding the threshold level of saturation and then over-saturation that focuses on one particular artist….I want to make dang sure you did not miss my COMPLIMENT of TAYLOR, that is for sure!
* * *
I didn’t watch the CMT Award show at all last night. I sometimes give Taylor Swift stuff a hard time, mostly because there seems to be SO MUCH of it all, but I watched this video as the old lady I am and I really enjoyed it, much to my own amazement. Taylor could ‘rap’ pretty dang good as far as I know, she was dynamite on the character and the interaction between the two was pretty good also. I thought the whole bleep gag was really good and believable!
ALSO, I did catch Taylor as a main character in the CSI show…the one in Las Vegas this past few months and she was excellent as an actress in that one.
So this one gets the old THUMBS UP from me!

I am sorry the cmt award show
was a disgrace to country music

show was all about ts what a joke’

There must be people out that want to see a change and want to hear country music again…..if it’s about money then someone is not smart enough to know that you can have both markets. Gum snapping bubble gum country for the teens and real country music for those of us who still want to hear it.
This blog is evidence of the fact that the many folks(well at least in this blog) are not happy with what CMT did to country music last night.
I for one am fed up with it and I hope someday we can have country back closer to what it once was as a genre….it has lost it’s identity. Sure once in a while we get a great example of how modern and traditional can blend well but not nearly as much as I would like to see/hear.
Trace’s song “You’re Gonna Miss This” is an example of what I mean…..all around great song that to me is still country enough to keep my interested. We need more of it.
Always Right says:
Sis,
If the radios are dead, then why are you still listening to them?
Find other outlets for better quality music. The huge radio conglomerates dictates what gets played, not the fans. The fans have been out of the equation for some time now.
Radio could care less about the fans. They only care about making money off of advertising dollars. Plain and simple.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK PEOPLE! STUDY UP ON WHY THINGS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE!
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

I could look past the opening skit with T-Pain. I didn’t like it, but I overlooked it and didn’t pay any attention to it at first. I could overlook her mediocre performance of her current single, because everyone knew it was coming, every awards show she gets up there and performs at a below-average level. What really set me over the edge is how they had her close the show with Def Leopard. Yes they are not country, but beyond that, they are way too talented and she made them look bad. It was a joke that CMT had Taylor not only open the show, but close the show, with a third performance there in the middle. Great ladies like Martina and Lee Ann, who are extremely talented, had to sit out in the audience and watch. I could not believe they did not have Martina perform. She has a new album out and a brand new single that is amazing, and there is no doubt she would have knocked it out of the park. But, we had to watch Taylor perform three times. Like someone else said earlier, this too shall pass. True talent lasts decades. Taylor will fade in a few years.

The problem is not the music, it’s the fans. Complaining about what’s bad about Mainstream Pop Country seems to be more important than supporting the rest of the today’s music scene(Americana/Roots). To cmt’s credit…this blog site offers the alternative to Mainstream Pop Country. Have any of you complainers ever checked out the “Blogroll’ to the left of this page? Apparently not, or there would be no more complaining about today’s music.

Don’t let these names scare you, people. Country Music is just as good if not better than it ever has been, and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. How many of you have clicked on “Radio Free Texas” for instance and listened to the live stream while complaining on these blogs? My guess would be ZERO. Educate yourselves and stop being a slave to Mainstream Pop Culture. I dare you, unless of course you happy and completely satisfied with what you’re listening to on mainstream radio and what you are watching on cmt.

Right on redmaz well said they say they don’t like it yet here they are no wonder Allison writes about Taylor she’s the only one anybody responds to well with all the boring other stories Talylor is the only one making news.

Who on earth was in-charge of the CMT awards show? What an imbarrasment. If I wanted to watch a bunch of illiterate washed up rappers & rock bands I would be watching MTV. The creator of this show should be fired! That was not even country!!! I don’t know that I will watch anymore of that garbage. When I was in the store the day after I heard some other people say the same thing. When I turn on country, I want to watch country. Sugarlands performance totally turned me off of them, I used to like them but I wouldn’t spend a dime on any of their music now.
Hgriffi6 says:
Let me start off by saying that I have seen Taylor Swift live, and she is great live. If any one of you haters knew music at all, you could tell that most of the performers last night were struggling. There was a bad feed, the sound was messed up. But you couldn’t wait to get on this blog and talk crap about a very talented young lady. Yes, there should have been more variety, but that rapping with T-Pain was laugh out loud funny. My daughter and I watched it over and over. A great relief from the MTV awards, they were so raunchy that I turned the TV off. Taylor Swift is good inside and out, and i will support someone like that any day. She is a great role model for young people. After all, it is her dream…
bamadon says:
I am over Taylor Swift…she was way over exposed at the awards. They need more of Sugarland a group with better talent. If Taylor Swift is so talented, why not sing songs from her latest CD? Which I do not care for…..
Hgriffi6 says:
Always Right,
Yes and I’m obviously the soccer mom who buys their music, which is probably why they cater to me. Hmmm… I enjoy any oportunity that affords me bonding time with my daughter, and when it comes wrapped in a bubbly positive personality like Taylor Swift, I am grateful. So Taylor Swift, if you are reading this, thank you thank you thank you.

The Sommet Center is known for its bad sound it was horrible for the CMA’s, so that could be used as an excuse, but why was TS so bad at the ACM’s and the AMA’s she represented country music in a horrible way at an all genre show. I won’t even get into how her and Kellie fans cheated!!! I would have paid pay per view money to have, Alan, Tim, George, Faith, Sara, Miranda and Carrie instead of most of the performers that were on. I say good on you Carrie for spending time with your family. Oh and by the way when Carrie told her fans personally that she would not be attending because she would be spending a few days with her family for a big party for a special birthday for her mother, she also said, that her fans could take a break from voting and give someone else a turn! Class!!! I think she knew now matter how much her fans voted if she would have won CMT wouldn’t give it to someone who wasn’t present, cause they just are jaded like that. By the way I am kind was a TS fan till I saw there messages telling other fans how to cheat, so I will still listen to her music but I will not enter to any TS related sites, her fans are young and easily manipulated.
SMJ says:
Well said, Jeremy09! Thank you for your insight.

I guess that someone didnt like what i had to say. My first blog was removed. So to whom it did concern. Grow up get your head out of taylors other end. If you think that what you produced or seen last night was country music and entertainment then you need to go back when CMT first aired. CMT has killed what it means to be country. But you people that think taylor is a roll model for the youth of today then explain to real country singers how walking the floor,
rambling man or a country boy con survive has anything to do with the crap you seen last night . Poor Hank would(did) roll over in his grave. Taylor Swift is an embarisment to country music, as far as im concerned and what took place last night was also.

I think TS is a good role model, and genuinely a nice person and talented writer. Singing? Absolutely not! I think even Taylor knows deep in her heart she isnt country. Shes pop all the way, does the head banging moves in her performances ad nauseum, now adding rap. She likes to experiment. I think she went into Country because it was the easiest genre to get into as a young girl. It was a novelty they have peddled since only old folks are supposedly country fans. I think had she gone into pop she wouldnt have gotten anywhere because its already saturated with pop princesses and she can’t sing. She needs to write, maybe act but get out of country. Even her albums are also redone in popstyle for the radio. So she is not bringing young people to listen to radio, they are listening to her on the pop channels.

Kim says:
I have to agree with everyone, The show was all about Taylor, but I did not hear one performance that sounded good. It seemed to be more of a technical problem than a TS problem.
Sis says:
There was no performance that sounded good, and the show was all about Taylor.
bkb says:
i don’t know which combination to pick. carrie with a voice but no personality or taylor without a voice but a personality.

Oh they’re out in force today, those Taylor haters. I think it’s a full-fledged profession now, though one practiced by idiots.
Congratultions to Taylor for her FAN-VOTED awards. She’s the brightest star of all and deserves her incredible popularity.
I now return you to the lonely nay-sayers for whom Taylor Swift’s every success feels like root canal. Suffer on you fools.

CMT awards mean NOTHING. They are fan voted for VIDEOS and have absolutely nothing to do with music….in any genre. They are simply awards to make the perinneal losers feel good.
Except when Carrie won, right… and I know you voted
lindsay says:
so glad people are starting to get that Taylor can’t sing. I’m so sick of her being soo pushed. I mean come on MArtina McBride 3 octives in vocal range lost the buckle to Taylor who can’t even handle one octive right! Now I know why Carrie wasn’t there she was in Oklahoma with her family due to the fact it was her mothers birthday. Which if the awards would have been in April like normal.. Martina JUST released a new album why wasn’t she up there. Or Reba she’s got a Cd comin out in August. And Lambert is either gearing up to release or already has. Sugarland, and a few others were worth the watch, but other than that I saw this as the Taylor Music Awards. And those onstage costume changes SO OLD!
Mandy Lynn says:
These were VIDEO awards not for singing!!! Pay attention! fan voted video awards. TS has the most fans, She won! move on!

I am sooooo Glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks Taylor Swift Has NOOOOO talent whatsoever, What happened to Country Music, It makes me sad to see great Country Music Singer, notice I said singers, Not Actors-Showoffs-really off key wannabee singer. Get voted out by teenybobbers who don’t even know what real country music is.

oh, and by the way, to whom it said about Nay-sayers the only thing that makes me feel like im having a root canal,
IS WHEN I HEAR TAYLOR SING!!
OHHHH the suffering!

100’s of country singers out there why listen to someone you hate?
I’m happy you are suffering all the way to losersville. bunco squid :)
solongsowrong says:
Gee Mandy, some one who understands. I’ve been wondering that myself for years now. Why do these people keep listening to something they dislike so much?
Answer: It’s easier to complain, than look for the good Country music that Mainstream ignores. I have no pity for them. Hundreds upon hundreds of good Country artists, and they don’t make any effort at all to seek them out.
Swift’s music doesn’t bother me at all, because I don’t listen to it. haven’t listened to a commercial radio station or any Kiddie Kountry in over two years, yet I hear great Country music everyday, and think Country music is as good as its ever been.
whats up??????? says:
Its soooooooooooooooooooooo sad when your daddy can buy you a record contract and buy out cmt so your spoil brat of a daughter who cant sing a lick can do that on cmt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sami says:
I don’t listen to some of country music but I do listen and buy Carrie Underwood’s music. She is the only reason I came over to country in the first place. Since being here I have gotten to like a few other artists. DEFINATELY NOT TAYLOR OR KELLIE. One can’t sing and the other is annoying with her ditzy act and is an average singer. They were and still are pushed in my face tooo much!!!!! It is a total turn off.
countryiscool says:
I love Kellie, Carrie (& Taylor-just not LIVE performances). I also love Wynonna, Martina, Faith JoDee, Leanne & others.
To each their own, and let others do the same.

~~~
Exactly and it’s so funny to see these Carrie fans riled up over awards they voted on, Carrie won a few years ago and now that she isn’t winning they change their story and say don’t mean anything. hahaha
Amber says:
right on the money ( whats up)! Literally!!
Amber says:
It has nothing to due with pop or country it is the fact that the girl cannot sing, when it takes thousands of dollars worth of equiptment to make you sound good, on the radio, what happens when your live? well you tell me!
Stacey says:
Lisa says:
They couldn’t find another female artist to perform. Not Martina (Yeah, cause I am sure she didn’t want to promote her new album). Not Julianne. Not Leanne. Not Reba. Not Dolly. Not Gretchen. Not Ashton. Yep, none of those girls wanted to sing. The only only two they could find was Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift. It is a joke. And that has nothing to do with whether Carrie Underwood was in the building or not. CMT should be embarrassed. I doubt they are but they should be.
~~~
I agree that they should have had more females perform but you can’t blame that on Taylor and certainly not on Kellie since she only sang 1 song and it was her first time performing in 3 years. There were just 2 solo female performances to how many male? They should have had fewer males and more females. Country has always been like this, a big ole boys club.
lauren says:
Stacey, i think it is a stretch to say 90% of the people on here are mad Carrie Fans………….. Just because some people don’t like taylor and her singing doesn’t mean they are fans of Carrie.
Lisa says:
I agree Lauren, clearly it’s much easier for some people to say everyone is a crazy Carrie Underwood fan than it is to acknowledge that there is truth in these posts.
I am a 35 year fan of country music (long before Carrie Underwood arrived on the scene) and I don’t find this as funny as Stacey does. Yes, I do blame Taylor. IMO she Should Have Said No when she was asked to perform 3 times. I own both of her CDs by the way. I never said anything about Kellie. I am also ticked at Sugarland. I would have preferred to hear them sing The Very Last Country Song over a performance with the B52s.
jeremy09 says:
Carrie = Entertainer of the Year enough said, something Taylor will never achieve!
what!! says:
Carrie martina faith reba- GREATEST VOCAILISTS IN COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Taylor can win all the awards for videos but she will never win one for vocalists or entertainer of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always Right says:
What!!
I wouldn’t say that. Politics and pay-offs are very common in the country music industry, so, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Taylor won a vocalist/entertainer award.
what!! says:
ONLY IF HER DADDYSWIFT PAY SOMEBODY TO GIVE IT TO HER!!! You are RIGHT!!!!
jeremy09 says:
“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Taylor won a vocalist/entertainer award.”
That would be “the day the music died”

robdodge68 says:
what about the rest of the real country music artist? Why wasnt anybody there? Because they knew that it was going to the gutter and didnt want any part of it. Why take part in something that might put a black mark on your career. It was a complete let down on the part of CMT. Hoping the producers are reading this forum so that they can see the real oppinions of true country music fans,
All you haters get lost and get a life says:
WELL ALL YOU HATERS YOU MAY NOT LIKE HER BUT CLEARLY OTHER PEOPLE DO AS THEY VOTED FOR HER AND MADE HER WIN.
AND THAT VIDEO WITH T-PAIN WAS MEANT TO BE FUNNY, SHE WAS MAKING FUN OF HERSELDF BUT OF COURSE THERE IS ALWAYS SOME IDIOT WHO WAS BORN WITHOUT A SENSE OF HUMOR.

S says:
I’m not a Taylor Swift fan but thought the video was funny. But, I thought it was unfair that Taylor opened the show, had a solo during the show, and also closed the show, especially when there was REAL talent sitting in the audience who didn’t get a chance to perform. Some of them, like Martina McBride had new CD’s to promote yet they were left sitting the audience while CMT’s little sweetheart took over the show. I used to love the CMT awards but doubt that I’ll watch it next year.
S says:
Mandy Lynn said “These were VIDEO awards, not for singing.” Well I think Mandy Lynn hit the nail right square on the head. Since Taylor can’t sing she has to compensate by making spectacular videos. Kind of like her performances on awards shows. She always has to have a big production on stage to make up for the fact that she can’t sing live.
Maegan says:
I am getting very sick of reading all of these comments saying that CMT is a joke. It isnt. Taylor Swift CAN sing and if you think differently, that is your own oppinion. She did a very good job at the Awards and I, personally, thought that that T-Swift, T-Pain comical rap video was very VERY funny. It was meant to be a joke, not to be taken seriously. Have you ever heard of “I’m on a Boat”? It’s another one that T-Pain did. Again, supposed to be funny.
Now, the reason that Taylor Swift was on three times last night is because everyone loves her. Well, obviously not everyone (after reading ya’lls comments) but a lot of people love her. Maybe you havn’t noticed, but she is always on T.V., her songs are always on the radio, WE ALL LOVE HER!
CMT is not going down the tubes. Sure, maybe music doesnt sound like it used to, but that isn’t anybody’s fault. Songwriters have to write new songs and singer’s have to sing them to keep up with the new generation and thta is very hard to do.
Now, unless you are going to get up there and sing, then You have no room to be talking.
Thank you.
S says:
Maegan — everyone can sing. It’s just that some people can sing on-key and other can’t. Taylor can’t!!!
