Taylor Swift and T-Pain Unveil "Thug Story" Music Video at the CMT Music Awards

Posted: June 16th, 2009 at 8:01 pm  |  By: Chris Parton

So much discussion was made over what Taylor Swift and T-Pain would be doing at tonight's (June 16) CMT Music Awards that I was almost worried the moment would be anticlimactic. But Swift and T-Pain did not disappoint. In a fast-moving video sequence with awards show host Bill Engvall, we saw Swift as a Vulcan in the new Star Trek movie, as a grossly undersized NFL player and then finally as a slightly less-than gansta rapper with T-Pain in the music video for "Thug Story." Swift rapped original lyrics and poked fun at herself while T-Pain contributed his signature auto-tuned hooks. Her self-deprecating humor was hilarious -- especially the part about her love of baking cookies. So, in what may be the most talked about show opening in CMT Music Awards history, they pulled it off -- and society as a whole seems unfazed. But what do you think? Was it worth the hype? How are Swift's skills as a rapper? Would you like to see the two of them perform together live? And what will the rap and hip-hop community think about this?

My mom’s watching the award show and says it’s the sorriest one she’s ever seen. The host’s jokes are bombing with her, the musical performances so far aren’t impressing her, and she’s overall underwhelmed.

She’s hoping Sugarland and Trace Adkins will make her feel she hasn’t completely wasted her time watching it. That’s the only reason she hasn’t stopped watching yet.

Please make it stop. Or at least revoke voting privileges from the fans. They’re proving tonight that they can’t be trusted with this responsibility.

I dont think that the Big ___ Chain pendant is in poor taste and CMT should be ashamed that they allowed it on the show. It is a slap in the face to dignity and is trying to be MTV type shock value. Not on CMT because country is supposed to be something to have the children to be able to watch-but not with the Big ___ Chain pendant.

So far, the jokes haven’t been funny because they’re too true. There have been WAY too many instances of bleeping out words - even if some of it is for special effect.

Now, I’ll say something good. I was very happy to see Alan Jackson win. Ted Nugent was very gracious on the red carpet.

Listen, I don’t like to be rude or to burst any bubbles, but tonight’s show was beyond words to the level of the worst award show I have ever seen. I am not going to attack people’s voices here (Well, I won’t name names) but please tell me why there are power houses like Wynonna Judd that could sing the roof off the place yet the only talents performing tonight sounded like birds chirping off tune? It was really boring and I didn’t like it at all. Let’s hope for a better one next year.

The AMERICANA awards?

  • Scott T says:

Too Redmaz…..I agree with you 100%. My comment could have been better explained. It just seems that all the little ones want to vote for the “HOT and YOUNG” little girl that was singing…..not the older and better singers. Someone else asked the question above…..where were the older TRUE COUNTRY singers tonight??? If its a CMT Awards show….then it should have COUNTRY MUSIC as the star…….

Taylor Swift has brought a lot of fans to country music and the country biz needs the money, but the country music world and the people that matter and determine whom is played on radio don’t understand that the fans Taylor brings in is young girls and these girls taste changes like the weather. They aren’t long time country music fans and CMT as well as country Radio is doing nothing to take care of and please the long time country music fans.

Check out the original version of “Murder on Music Row” by “Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time” To Big Al, I answered your questions in the other blog. People like to watch and listen to Country Music, it’s supposed to be family friendly and more wholesome. I cannot believe all the vulgar comments. First it was Katie Cook on the Red Carpet. She cussed at least twice and so did Sheryl
Crow. Then it was Toby Keith getting bleeped. T-pain had on that rude necklace. Even the puppet made several sexual references. This awards show was the worst I have watched and if I were the Country Stars I would start to boycott the show if this keeps up. Nothing about it looked or sounded like the country music I love. I am so disappointed. I will never watch again.

Hey I love Taylor….listen to Jason Aldean’s song She’s country. That will give you your first lesson. Or Gretchen Wilson’s Redneck Woman, Sugarland, Trace, Toby, Zac Brown Martina, Keith, Miranda Lambert, Reba, Hank, most of which are “new” Country(Miley is even more country than Taylor) sooooorrrry, Taylor aint replacing anyone;)

The country community loves her and obviously knows she talented and amazing. George strait, Tim Mcgraw & faith hill, brad paisley, rascal flatts, all had her open their tours the past years. You think if they thought she couldn’t sing and wasn’t talented they would have her open for them?!. GEORGE STRAIT is practically a country music legend. I think they know country music better than any of you.

I am a person of color and I grew up on a farm and we listened to country music. I grew up listening to Dolly, Reba, and Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Conway and Porter Wagoner and for me thats what I consider to be country music. Country today is more pop music and I hate pop music as well as rap music. There is a time and place for it but I don’t feel that it belongs in country music. Country music is supposed to be clean and family oriented and not lewd or vulgar.

Country music today is more focused on the younger audience and has almost forgotten about the older audience and is missing out on a great number of faithful and loyal fans.

Why was Bill Engvall chosen as the host when originally it was posted that Toby Keith would be the host. I like Bill but his jokes sucked and the show was boring. I have watched all the country music shows and for me this is the absolute worst show I have ever seen.

On this final note I wish that Toby Keith would win an award lately he has been just kicked in the teeth and just can’t seem to win anything. I would like to see George Strait win as entertainer of the year and I don’t feel that Carried Underwood should have won it at the ACM and I did vote for George and I vote for him every time he is nominated for an award because the man is just all around classy, a great performer and a great southern gentleman.

Y’all should be embarrassed by that show tonight. The best part was Joey + Rory and even that got screwed up when the word “ho” was censored.

I have to agree with the message that was on Joey’s guitar: “We miss country music.”

I love country music and feel like it was a slap in the face to have to add T-Pain to sing with Taylor, To have Sugarland sing LoveShack and to have Taylor sing with Def L. I dont get it?! I was Highly upset with this award show because normally I enjoy the CMT Awards more than any other! That being said I don’t feel you should have this “RAP” video on this “COUNTRY” site even though its suppose to be funny! I think if Taylor wants this image she should go pop and try and put videos out on MTV! Awards were just horrible im sorry… If you didnt watch yet dont waste your time.. If your a true country fan! If you like Taylor and her pop image then go for it! I feel bad and im not taking away from Brad, Toby, or even Darius. Im just ashamed as to what CMT is making of their awards!

Honestly… I think all of you need to calm down. This was a fun award show tonight, and the opening act was in good humor. If you noticed through the whole skit, Taylor was poking fun at herself, not individuals like most of the hosts do on the show. She is a very smart, market savvy girl, and knows how to promote her self to her audience. People are always looking for something exciting and different. That’s why Reba is as great as she is, because she is able to re-invent herself all the time. If you remember, Reba did broadway, movies, and wrote books. Why is so wrong that a young girl is branching out and trying new things? It just goes to show that she is multi-talented and gifted, and her team knows what there doing. Leave her alone, and get over yourself. There’s always going to be things that push buttons with people, and that’s what makes music and media industries thrive.

  • I LOVE TAYLOR!!! says:

    Posted: June 16th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

and why does she sell tickets? OH YEAH because she can sing. obviously people are going to buy tickets to a show of an artist that they like and can sing and perform well live. Maybe if you came out of your little bubble and realized were not living in 1910 anymore you would realize that country music has opened itself to a wider range of fans from all ages and taylor swift has brought life back into country music

  • D-Man says:

really? i’ve been to 3 of her shows, the first one back when she was only 17, and seen her live on good morning america where she was singing 20 feet away from my face. let me tell you, she sounds better than she does on her record which is pretty damn good.

  • Melissa says:

    Posted: June 16th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I dont feel like you can compare Carrie Underwood to Taylor Swift at all.. As i’ve read through the threads! Carrie Underwood would sing songs like “Stand By Your Man” and “Islands In The Stream” and sounded Country! She has that natural beauty in her voice.. Taylor is no where near that.. I dont get it. I dont think this award show should’ve focused on Taylor as much. Compared to other artists like Toby, or Martina who have just faded away in the eyes of these award shows. Oh well i guess we dont make a difference after all..

I love Sugarland, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Lady A, Rascal Flatts… The show had great moments that did not include Taylor. What is sad for me is that I live in the Rocky Mountains and we did not see the program until it was over. We did not get to vote. The program overall needed some production help.

I don’t get how CMT, supposedly about music, can produce a music show with such bad sound. CMT has a high-definition music channel, so why can’t they get their act together?
I think all the performers have done a great job so far. The wacko assortment of presenters - so over it! Let country singers present awards at country music awards. And, I don’t want to hear commentary where there is a word bleeped out during every segment. I do always like the skit at the beginning of the show each year, and I think Taylor was great, and I think she is totally talented, along with AJ, BP, KU, and DB, and Lady A. Also, I enjoyed Blake Shelton’s twitter commentary as he watched from home….. :D

But if you cant sing….then why keep trying. All you people like Taylor cause shes young and new to all of this. She isnt COUNTRY!!!!! Shes POP….which is the reason you all like her. This CMT 2009 show was NOT Country….. how dare you call it that. All music is good but we call it Country for a reason, all I heard was pop and rap……. there were a few glimmers of country but the whole show was so disappointing. My heart goes out to Trace, Alan, Brad, Toby to had been a part of this show…… what is happening? I sure won’t watch CMT again in the future. I have nothing against Taylor Swift but if she wants to sing country then it needs to be country or find another venue. Even your presenters weren’t Country performers, CMT needs to change their name to POP.

    Just wow…

People, it’s not a debate. Taylor is a bad singer. She is in no way “country.” These are facts. It has nothing to do with my taste in her music, I actually like it and own her CD’s, but it is NOT country. CMT, if you didn’t know, is owned by the same people as MTV. CMT has been going downhill for the last few years and is really starting to hit rock bottom. I didn’t bother to watch the show tonight, I decided to not waste my time instead. Fan voting is a joke.

I find it pretty sad when I’m wishing for Carrie Underwood to represent country music. I might have watched if she was on there to sing “I Told You So,” or if the song’s writer, the incredible Randy Travis, had been there. Then again, his music hasn’t got any love from radio since 2003, and won’t again.

It’s also very sad that Keith Urban offers one of the most “country” performances. He is as pop as they come, sorry kids.

I am sick by this dung that is called “Country Music”. MTV is doing everything they can to undermine the hallowed halls of the Grand Ole Opry. This is just a sign of the times a reflection of the mindless drones that are following the spin doctors straight to HELL.

Johnny and Waylon are rolling over in their graves. Shame on all the real country artists that won’t step up and take on the labels and tell them no more crap like tonight will be acceptable again. You want Rock, POP, RAP then go listen to it. Don’t hand me a hamburger and tell me its a chicken sandwich. COUNTRY IS COUNTRY leave it the f@#$ alone.

GOD BLESS JAMEY JOHNSON AND RAY SCOTT ! ! ! !

CMTV CONSIDER YOURSELF ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST. WE WILL TAKE NO MORE. “YOU TELL ALL YOUR LITTLE FRIENDS I”M COMIN AND OUTLAW COUNTRY IS COMING WITH ME”

WE ARE HERE TO TAKE BACK THE COUNTRY….

I’ll be honest: I’m sick of Taylor Swift. I honestly can’t remember the last time I came to this site and didn’t see her face on the front page. CMT just had to make sure that this show was all about her tonight. I thought it was suspicious how they planned for Taylor to close the show AFTER the Video of the Year award was given. How convenient, come on up, get your award, and close the show out, even though you opened the show with your rap routine, AND already performed earlier in the show. And you can always tell who the Taylor fans are by the all caps and the horrible grammar and the throwing out of “everyone is jealous of taylor, she’s amazing!” She is not amazing, in fact, she is ruining country music. I, along with others on here, have professional music training, so when I say that Taylor is not good at singing live, it is not “sour grapes” as many of you Taylor fans like to throw out, it is a fact.

I am from Reading PA and knew Taylor Swift’s family. She grew up on a small horse farm on Freemansville Road, not “Wyomissing, PA” like her bio insists. She moved to Wyomissing later on, right before she moved to Nashville. Trust me - there are NO horse farms in Wyomissing. It’s filled with big, expensive homes and mansions. Her house had an elevator in it, for christ’s sake. I’m sure they implied she lived in Wyomissing her whole life because it sounds more “country” (ala like “Wyoming”).

Taylor Swift has always had a luxurious and wealthy lifestyle… Her dad made his millions off being a stockbroker in NYC. Got her some sleazy junior “record deal” with Sony by the time she was 12, even though she had minimal songwriting experience, if any. A few years later she was getting huge endorsements by Taylor Guitars and appearing in Abercrombie and Fitch ads, years before she ever had a cd out, only being a tween at this time (ahem, daddy’s money). Her dad also at this time got her involved in the Britney Spears talent agency (you know, cause that’s so country). TRUST ME - SHE ONLY GOT ALL OF THIS BECAUSE HER FAMILY IS LOADED.

Ever wonder why she can’t sing for s— live? Here’s your answer. She is a joke around here (Berks County) to the people who truly knew her “abilities”. I’ve heard she is shunned around the musical Nashville scene as well. She attempted to get into acting before this too. Her family has sold her since the beginning. She also wasn’t really country off the bat. She was attempting to do more of a pop acoustic route until it was recommended by a friend to go country (I still have her lackluster demo cd laying on my shelf). She is Avril Lavigne in country boots….a man made product of the music industry.

STOP THINKING SHE IS A TALENTED SONGWRITER. She pays for it all people! This girl probably barely knows how to tune her guitar. “Co-writing” today is the equivalent of telling someone to write a song for you, footing the bill for it, and then slapping your name on it. This type of payola in the industry has been going on for years. It’s gotten so worse in recent years that I would compare it to the steroid scandal in the sports industry — all integrity has been lost. Don’t worry though, more and more people are realizing Taylor is a phony (her tone-deaf videos on youtube never lie) and more people are speaking out. I read an interview of her once where she stated when she was 11 her family drove down to Nashville and she walked down music row knocking on the doors of labels and handing out her cd, making it sound like she was a freaking cow girl. Puhhhh—-lease. Don’t EVER believe the hype.

I don’t understand why you few haters and yes I mean few, insist on bashing Taylor. I come to these blogs and I know you guys are the same people that blow the same smoke on Taylor Swift NO MATTER what the topic is. Click on a blog without her name if you have nothing nice to say. You guys seem to thrive off who can find the most creative way to bash a 19 year old mega superstar who isn’t reading this anyway and is going to be around for so many many many years to come. Get over it, she’s almost ready to drop a third album. LOL

For people to sit and complain about 10% of today’s country music, and not even know about the other 90% is appalling and disgusting. Remember when I said 90% of the people know only about 10% of today’s music? Taking in consideration this blog, it’s more like 99%. Today’s Country Music is just as good if not better than ever(mainly because it’s more accessible). Just because people here don’t know about it doesn’t mean it does not exist. EDUCATE YOURSELVES!

I am so disgusted with the CMT Award Show last night. This is supposed to be a COUNTRY SHOW not rock, rap, & hip hop. You also better watch how much time you give to Taylor Swift. You are going to lose your CMT fan base real quick.

What has happened to country music? The CMT awards was a pop and hip-hop concert. I enjoy all types of music but country should stick to being country. If you’d get back to the way it used to be maybe you wouldn’t have to try so hard to have a bigger fan base. Jamey Johnson is the best thing that’s happened to country music in decades. He’s brought the heart back to country…we need more people like him. Sorry CMT the awards were a huge let down!

Ok, first of all you people need to get over the rap video because it was all a joke you were suppose to laugh at it. I know I did. Second of all you need to get off Taylor Swift’s back I am so sicking of everytime I read a blog you taylor haters have to ruin the blog with all your negative words. If you don’t like taylor Swift then don’t listen to her it is a simple as that. When Shania Twain came around in the 90s and most of her music sounded pop I don’t see you ripping a part her so give Taylor a break. I personally love Taylor, but I do think that they could have shown a little less of her last night. As for it being a fan voted award show you people need to stop complaing half the time the winners at the ACMs and the CMA’s should not have won because they are chosen by people who do n’t even listen to country music. So get off your butts and go vote next year. What Taylor Swift is doing to Country music I think is a good thing which is bringing a younger audience to country music. Yes they might not be listening to someone like George Strait, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline Etc… But at least they are listening to so sort of country music and that is all that matters.

I understand why people are upset. They see the blue-jean wearing, tobacco chewing era of country being swept right from underneath them. The legendary eras of George Jones, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline all going the way of young pop stars who are more familiar with chasing boys and other childish ambitions. Sorry, music is going in another direction. Collaborations are happening more and more and you should have seen this coming with the introduction of stars like Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Shania Twain. Sorry, y’all brough this upon yourself. It’s a new day and age. Lil Wayne a rap superstar is coming out with a rock album. It’s a different time. Country music still has plenty of artists who represent the good old-fashioned values of country music. If you want to change the awards show process then start up your own network or boycott CMT. It’s not going away as much as you want it to. Taylor Swift is a smart and savvy media personality. Also, rap music is very similar to country music. It’s about making a better life for yourself and country music stars rhyme in their songs too. I don’t understand the hatred for rap. I’m a fan of country and hip-hop. Yes, my favorite country song of all-time is He Stopped Loving Her Today and You Never Even Called Me By Name.

    Although I’m a taylor fan,
I too agree that cmt has too much taylor.
I mean, come on, its not like only teens watch it!
and its not like cmt awards is a teen thing.
CMT is all about country music and singers like george strait, shania twain, Sugarland, Keith Urban.
    and not only about taylor.
I mean, that’s what cmt is all about.

Maybe they are thinking that taylor will promote and
take country music to a whole new level or something.
Or maybe they think that taylor can promote country music to teens.
    I don’t know.

    But hey!
    Taylor is awesome too!
Its like have you come across most teens her age nowadays loving country music and
    even producing them?
Or maybe teen pop stars that adore country music like her?
    I don’t think so.

So I think that she deserves to be on the awards
and a little limelight since she is one of the youngest country singers these days and you ought to give her credit for that.
except maybe she should not be featured so many times.

There is nothing positive about being a “thug.” Country music has lost all it’s confidence in it’s ability to stand alone and stand well. We DO NOT have to have diversity in our music. To Noah…the whole thing was bad bad joke. I don’t care who thought they were being funny, there was only, maybe, 10% country music on that show. The rest was smothered in bubble gum pop, sorry excuse for hip-hop and just plain stupid. There is nothing wrong with “crossing over”, mixing musical genres and making something unique. It is fine to experiment. But the whole show was a total train wreck. Country Music is Country Music! It’s stories about joy and heartache, family and life in the country. Not Thug Life, Metal Mania and or bubble gum pop.

Every morning I wake up and turn on CMT. I watch the top 20 and see the same videos. There are ton of traditional artists out there making some great music. Great COUNTRY music. Last night was not country music. It was indeed a huge joke that was not even remotely funny!!

I hope you all somehow manage to retain your jobs…frankly you presented the worst award show ever. Bad sound, horrible vocals from the much overpromoted 19 year old artist, the host was not the least bit humorous , way to many off color comments through out the broadcast and nothing country at all about this production! Poor, poor decisions. With so many wonderful female country artist nominated for female vocalist video..may I ask… why only Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler were given the performance nods.

I agree with Walt for the most part and with the others that believe this was a horrible awards show. Bill didn’t have his usual funny stuff and the scripts for the performance anouncements were very poorly written with too much insider stuff implied to reach most of the audience. I don’t know how it was in person, but the audio on TV was very bad and made most of the stars seem as if they couldn’t carry a tune. Also, for a “video” awards show there wasn’t much promotion of the actual videos. Just very very poor!!

Worse CMT ever it as an embarassment to country music. The production was awful. The girl singer’s couldn’t sing. It was more like a bar scene instead of an award show. CMT what has happened to you? First of all you don’t play music much anymore and now you don’t know how to produce a good awards show. I will stick to the ACMs and CMA’s. They are class acts.

Jeez, people need to settle down. Change is not necessarily a bad thing. Some of you are so angry about something so silly, and all of the spouting off sounds a little ignorant. I understand that not everyone likes change, but I do agree that this particular change has been in the making for quite a while. A lot of the country artists have been merging into the pop genre for at least 10 years, you can’t blame it all on a young girl who just so happened to make it big. Like others have said - Shaniah, Faith, Carrie, Keith, and honestly, IMO - Rascal Flatts - have all contributed to the move, among others. I don’t think Taylor Swift is the most talented artist, but she does her own thing. As much as some people may hate it, she has brought a lot of positive things to the country music scene. If you don’t like where country music is headed, then stock up on copies of all of the artists that sound like traditional country, and leave the mainstream country artists to do their thing.

Keep it country…I do believe Taylor is more pop than
she is country. And that thing with T-Pain, it was meant
to be funny but i don’t know it just didn’t suit..She’s
more geared towards the younger audience. Now Alan Jackson,
Allison Krauss, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, they’re real both
old and new country. You can hear it and see it in them.. Taylor is talented in her own right, not particularly my taste.

He did not even know his lables name and was drunk of his rocker, and by the way southern rock is not country. O and please next time you host an award show don’t have lines every time someone comes up on stage. Taylor swift has more class than most of the people on this message board. The T-pain skit was meant to be funny which it was. Did we all forget when Tim Mcgraw produced a song with rapper Nelly? that was played all over radio stations and was a hit. And taylor is in no way a spoiled little brat. She gives back to her fans 20 times more than anyone else in the business. She’s always staying for hours after shows signing autographs saying thank you whenever she can to her fans. She’s winning everything because she’s extremely talented us fans love her and will continue to put her on top because of everything she has done for us. Get over it people, taylor swift is not going anywhere!!!

What I saw on CMT was a Disney performance, a rock concert
with a 60’s GO-Go Girl bobbing for apples as she jumped around on stage and a little bit of good country music.
What were you thinking CMT? Last time I’ll watch.

  • Jacks says:

    Posted: June 17th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

The song Tim did with Nelly was no where near the disaster that went on last night! And change is fine. Heck I used to listen to rock stations, but then rap took over. I dealt with the change and lucky for me there was country and I switched. So why does rap now have to be dragged into country music. They have their own awards shows stay off the country show!! And why are they promoting Taylor so much??? Martina and Alison are far better singers and don’t need to toss their hair around to put on a good show, or dump water on themselves or tear off clothes! This is getting ridiclous!

Ok so my last comment didn’t go through?
Basically I said that Taylor has much more maturity & class than the rest of you. Everytime a blog even mentions Taylor a little bit, the same people post negative comments. How old are you? & if you don’t like her that much, why are you taking the time to read & comment on a blog about her?
The CMT music awards are supposed to be for fun. They’re not as important as the ACM awards & CMA awards so chill & relax a little.

Is it just me? Every time I hear Taylor Swift sing live she is AWFUL! I think she is a talented song-writer, but a terrible singer. She has all the “teeny-boppers” voting for her (and I’m 17), and she’s not really country. She’s more “pop” than country. I was AMAZED that “Love Story” won video of the year after CMT Countdown named “Just A Dream” as the top video of 2008. In my opinion, Carrie Underwood has more talent in her pinky than Taylor has in her skinny body! I’m on Taylor Swift overload and I’m feeling ill…

Everyone has said that the rap skit was “a joke.” I agree. The entire show was a Taylor Swift “JOKE!” I just called CMT and told them how disappointed, as a parent, I was in their show…how inappropriate some of the language and performances were. It was disgusting. You know, I wonder if Ms. Swift would have even made it past the first round of American Idol w/Simon!!! Would love to know what he thinks. Compare Carrie in her yellow (”So Small”) or burgundy (”I Told You So”) gowns to that mini-skirt Ms. Swift wore. No class…no class at all, I say. She’s making money on America’s youth and tone-deaf adults.

I didn’t watch the CMT Award show at all last night. I sometimes give Taylor Swift stuff a hard time, mostly because there seems to be SO MUCH of it all, but I watched this video as the old lady I am and I really enjoyed it, much to my own amazement. Taylor could ‘rap’ pretty dang good as far as I know, she was dynamite on the character and the interaction between the two was pretty good also. I thought the whole bleep gag was really good and believable!

ALSO, I did catch Taylor as a main character in the CSI show…the one in Las Vegas this past few months and she was excellent as an actress in that one.

So this one gets the old THUMBS UP from me!

you go keep on living in your bubble, thinking taylor swift is some legitimate, authentic musician. more and more people who know her history, like myself, are speaking out. i’m sure it will only be a matter of time until more details about the man-made manufacturing of taylor’s career will be more well known — unless we all get black bags over our heads by taylor’s mafia! i like how you threatened me by sending a message to bmg about my message…considering i didn’t make up any lies about her, the truth is the truth abbey, and it’s called “Freedom of speech” here in america. if you don’t like it you can go move to somalia and listen to taylor there.

to everyone else: read my above post from this blog (under my name “abc”) which describes how i live in reading pa and knew from the very start how taylor swift was a phony before she got big. her whole show is a big push of money from her father’s part. why do you think she can’t sing? come on abbey, get with it. you think anyone with a tone-deaf voice like that could get anywhere, from scratch, in the music industry without money? she would have gotten the door shut right in her face. youtube videos do not lie. you’d even think just chance by now, all the live performances she’s done in the past 3 years, her voice would be better — but it’s still horrible. it just goes to show you how little (aka NON-EXISTANT) proper training she had before this.

i just saw that video of her performing with def leppard. god, how horrible. it even sounds like the engineers turned her mic down so they wouldn’t have to have their ears bleed as much.

We may not like it, but she is this years big thing for “country music”. As for T-pain… I think that he is great, and that they decided to to put him in the CMT’s is AWESOME!!! I listen to country, and have for the last 28 years, but those of you who are “disappointed” fail to realize that things like this go to show that music is a language that removes all boundaries. Just because you are afraid of listening outside of one genre of music, it doesn’t make you right, and really just shows your inability and ignorance to accept change. I’m willing to bet that if George Straight decided to have Jay-z go country for the hip hop awards on BET, you would be all over it thinking that it was the best thing since sliced bread, I just think that it’s funny that if things don’t go your way, it’s the end of the world. You have a couple of posters who hate everything Taylor Swift does. You have a couple of posters(and one blogger) who loves everthing Taylor Swift does. Both groups seem equally delusional and crazy to me. The question is, what do those in the middle think? I’m not a fan of the girl and I hate that she is a part of country music. I think she is nothing more than a marketing plan. But she has a lot of young fans she makes happy. Just wish she would do that in a different genre. I think the overexposure is starting to work against her, at least from the rumbling I’ve heard. And with so many bad vocal performances, her fans can no longer claim nerves. The girl is just not much of a vocalist. The cmt awards were awful on many levels. But for those of us who believe that Taylor really wants to be a pop star and has no loyalty to country, the starting with rap, finishing with rock just wasn’t endearing in the least. Coundn’t even take anymore of the dancing with DL at the end. Disgusting.

I don’t hate Taylor but she makes a fool of herself trying to hard to impress on stage, she’s very awkward. Someone here said she was the best thing since Shania Twain, oh please how can you compare her to someone with great vocals. Taylor stop trying to be a bigger star than anyone else.

I was never much of a fan of “old timey, twangy” country music, though the last 10-12 years country music has been great, but, I am definitely not a fan of “rap crap”. To include that on the CMT program was not good. That was probably my last CMT program. Taylor Swift wasn’t so swift on the CMT and who the hell is T-Swizzle 9sounds like what you would expect from the rap-crap noise which is not music). Anyway, thanks for the great shows of the past.

Jezz people, like Taylor or not like Taylor, it’s about the fact that she is showing the music industry how to sell records…people are taking notice of that fact, people of the industry anyway. Give her a break, country music now a days is nothing like it was even 20 years ago or even 20 years before that. And Elvis, do you look at him as country? Country music works with the story, Swift is 19, she is still growing up here, seems like allot of negative people out their, people that don’t really hold the country spirit, what country people are all about.

Country music sucks. It’s the chick flick of the music industry. All the songs are the same. “My dog/wife/husband/boyfriend/hamster died/is sick/is dying/got run over by a reindeer/left me”. Maybe I just haven’t listened to enough of it, but it seems like the greatest champions for country music are completely closed off to everything else anyway. So, yeah, there seems to be a lot of baggage with country music.

But, this sort of thing gives me a little faith that maybe country music will come around. Maybe Taylor Swift will be able to open the ears of the country music enclave that watches CMT. Judging by the above comments, I don’t think CMT fans know how to take a joke. They want the same stuff forever by different people. Maybe they should spend some time “ON A BOAT” without bass fishing…

Well it looks like the people that just come back to country music will be leaving again. What an embarassment to country music! Why do they need to put that rap stuff on a country music award show?
Where were the country stars that can sing? Some were there but didn’t perform why?
Next thet will have strippers on and suggestive dancing.

Congratulations folks. I think you might have set a new record, for stupidity in a single blog. Keep up the good work… and your reward for continuing to complain without taking any action to find Country music more to your liking…..even more Taylor Swift in the immediate future. Let the good times roll!

Good God CMT what are you trying to do to us, your true loyal country music fans, those who have loved Merle, Hank, Waylon, give us a break, hey I adored Brad & Keith, Kellie was terriffic, but please you have an artist who can sing the phonebook AJ sitting there and you start off with rap and end with rock, what the heck is happening to our music, if you want just your kiddies who have to be in bed by 9pm okay cause thats surely who did the voting. In my opo this was the worst show ever, I can’t believe what your trying to pass off. Give us AJ, Wy, Tim,Faith, Carrie those who can sing and do it well and they are real country artists who have paid their dues, oh God I do hope George Jones wasn’t watching, he surely would think he somehow left Nashville and wound up in LA at the Mtv awards it was awful, I feel sorry for whoever decided to go with this insane program. Your loosing your true blue fans cmt be careful! These kids change their minds like they change their cell phones!

nikkis120: You can still enjoy George Jones, Merle, and even Waylon. Mainstream radio and shows like this have ignored them for years, but their NEW music (yes, even some from Waylon) is played on Americana radio. Americana is a genre that respects the legends, respects the Roots and Traditions of Country music, and welcomes any artist who understands that music is art, not just an enterprise for making money.

If you call yourself a true loyal Country music fan, you owe it to yourself to check out the Americana genre.

To everyone who is trashing this video because “it is in bad taste,” grow up. I think stunts like this is what shows everybody that we create this divide in society that is completely unnecessary. The video was made in good fun, and the fact that there is even a discussion about whether CMT went too far is shocking to me. People are saying that this video portrays Taylor Swift as a rapping bimbo. If you open your eyes you would realize that this video is a comical slap at the rap industry if anything. T-Pain is wearing a necklace with a pendant that reads “BIG ASS CHAIN.” As if any more proof was necessary to show this is more a slap at rap music than at country music. I applaud both T-Pain and Taylor Swift for having a good enough sense of humor to make fun of themselves. If this music video truly bothered you, then you can do one of two thing: 1. find a sense of humor 2. Turn off the channel, they do not need you watching anyway.

It was terrible! CMT over-pimped Taylor for 3 performances, and blew off Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood, and Miranda Lambert, all of whom were nominated for various awards. The whole thing was a joke! I am sorry I wasted 2 hours of my life on this nightmare of a show.

DEAR CMT: Do you really need to show Taylor 3 separate times on one show? Isn’t it enough to suffer through her horrid singing voice for one performance a night? She was so arrogant, yet her singing was as horrid and pitchy as always. Unbelievable how much CMT over-pimps that girl. wow.

  • SickofSwift says:

    Posted: June 24th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Taylor can’t sing her way out of a paper bag, and yet we had to hear her three times? What an outrage! I would rather eat dirt then suffer through that again. Someone needs to sit her down and tell her the truth: She CANNOT SING! Is it so hard to be honest with the girl? she is not a child, but an over-bearing, cocky 19 year old who thinks she is the best thing since Shania Twain. Get real. She is not fit to wipe Shania’s boots, or even Carrie Underwood’s, who sings circles around her.

Okay, first of all, let’s get something clear. Country music died in 1996. It was then replaced by the beginning stages of Southern pop. That phenomenon has grown into the giant corporate Southern pop industry (see Kid Rock). The last “country” album I bought was Scarecrow, and I haven’t missed it at all. It’s okay if you like the music, but don’t pretend it’s something that it isn’t. Secondly, people don’t make it in the industry without talent. Everyone who says Taylor has no talent is completely off base. Third, if you people hated the awards show so much, just change the channel. It’s not hard. It’s called a remote control. Personally, I didn’t even know CMT had an awards show. Last, but not least, just because something is different, doesn’t make it bad. Just because you didn’t enjoy the rap video, doesn’t mean someone (like me) didn’t think it was hilarious. T-Pain happens to be one of the most talented vocalists around. Just remember that narrow-minded people are the reason why the world is in the shape it is today.

    Thank you.

ok heres the fact if taylor goes then probably half the youth that actually bothers to listen to country music now will go too she brought more people to country. Trust me here in england country especially american country is not well know but if you came up to somebody of the street and asked them to name an american country singer they probably would either say i don’t know or taylor swift.
She is awsome anyway i can relate to her songs and so can millions of other teenage girls. Id like to see all you haters try to do what she is doing.

it was meant to be a joke. something that fans from every genre could laugh at. music is meant to do more than just entertain- it should reach all different types of people. country is meant to be ONLY for “kid approved family audiences” and some rap IS kid approved and family friendly. shame on everyone for feeding into stereotypes. it’s great to see artists having FUN and enjoying what they do.

I’m all for creativity, and crossing generes, but she colaberated with a dirt bag who sings about drugs, strippers, violence. WOW, were disappointed. AND IT’S NOT A RACIST THING, I’ve posted elsewhere about this. I’ve served with some of the finest black men our nation has to offer, and guys like this are an insult to them.

We still love her though, if she veers off course we will only hope and pray she pulls out. I’m a single dad with a 17 year old daughter, Taylor’s been a blessing to have as a role model to share with my kid. She has no responsibility to us per say, but she does to herself and her own family. She actually seems to have a real down to earth normal family, and that’s awsome!

I think it was great and funny what taylor did and i give her props. I think the people who are getting mad at this little show need to relax. Thats why america has different genes of music because not everyone has to like the same thing!!!!! I thought the performance was great.
