A Summer Playlist for the Indie Music Fan

Posted: June 8th, 2009 at 1:29 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Steve MartinI took a road trip last weekend with a friend of mine who likes bluegrass music. As he was flipping through my CD carrier, I think he was reluctant when I suggested Steve Martin's banjo album, The Crow, but we ended up listening to it a couple of times. It's one of the finest albums I've heard all year, especially when Vince Gill and Dolly Parton sing to each other on "Pretty Flowers," with Earl Scruggs joining Martin on the banjo lines. If that sounds like you're cup of tea, check out a few other indie artists on this summer playlist.

"Clawhammer Medley," Steve Martin
"Two Days of Darkness," the Belleville Outfit
"Cuba Vera Swing," Spring Creek (with Michael Cleveland)
"Nugent Family Band," Alecia Nugent
"Lonely Street," Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
"This Old House," Craig Bickhardt
"Angel Dream," the Gibson Brothers
"Oh My Love," Bearfoot
"Drinkin' to You," Red Stick Ramblers
"Up Jumped the Boogie," the Tractors
"Albuquerque," Chuck Mead
"Queen of This Mess," Angie Stevens
"Hurricane," David Berkeley
"I'm So Proud," Dan Penn
"Don't Turn Your Back," Dale Ann Bradley
"Tao Three," Casey Driessen
"Dreamin'," Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers
"These Words," Trevor Alguire

I saw Steve perform at the Grand Ole Opry last weekend and he was wonderful! I started playing the banjo when I was 15, how thrilling to see my favorite comedian jam on one of my favorite instruments!

I’m diggin’ “The Belleville Outfit”, and they’re smokin’ hot right now. #12 on the AMA chart, and #13 on the RMR chart. A great band playing some great adult music.

It might not be there quite yet, but Asheville, NC is starting to look a lot like the new Nashville, at least when it comes to bluegrass music’s roots and branches. Leading the way is the Songs From The Road Band, an aggregation of some of the area’s hottest songwriters, singers and pickers named for the project that first brought them together—a 2006 solo release by Steep Canyon Rangers bass player and songwriter Charles Humphrey III that came out just weeks before the Rangers were handed the IBMA’s Emerging Artist of the Year trophy. Now, with the release of As The Crow Flies, the Songs From The Road Band is serving notice that they’re more than a one-time get-together.
