Singer-Songwriter Amy LaVere Excels on $5 Cover Soundtrack

Posted: May 27th, 2009 at 9:25 am  |  By: Link Ray

The cool thing about the wide-ranging musical genre they call Americana is that it covers such a wide range of influences. A case in point is singer-songwriter Amy LaVere's "Killing Him," the track that opens the multi-artist compilation that serves as a soundtrack to $5 Cover, an online video series currently running on MTV. The person behind the series is Craig Brewer, the writer-director whose credits include Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan. $5 Cover is set in Memphis and follows the lives of a cast of young musicians as they struggle to reach their artistic destiny while dealing with such mundane matters as trying to pay the rent. The $5 Cover soundtrack is now available for free streaming at CMT.com. You may find something you like among the other tracks, but LaVere's "Killing Him" is a standout as she tosses country and rock with a little blues and jazz to come up with something completely her own.

YIKES Link Ray! Yikes! Song simple, but complex, message SKEERS me to no end, but at least there was ‘consequences’. The lady does have a unique voice that is just crystal clear.

Audited other tracks…..no, no, no, not for me. You are correct KILLIN’ HIM is the standout of all of them!

Amy delivers a great performance of “Killing Him”. Adult music.

RedMaZ: Hello! Re “Adult music”…..it is really even more ’skeery’ to me that it is MTV???? Is that a ‘young’ demographic?

You are right about her performance, she sings it ‘believable’.

Hi kayefun, nice to hear from you. Personally I don’t equate adult music with a certain age demographic. I usually compare it to a persons education and overall musical knowledge. I have met some young people who are well versed in music, and are able to differenciate between fluff and substance. On the other hand I have come in contact with older people with a limited knowledge of music who are quite impressed with the typical and mundane. I came into contact with Amy LaVere and her music while she was married to Gabe Kudela, the drummer for the Country-Punk band The Legendary Shack Shakers. So you see I doubt many soccer moms with their sensible shoes are going to be listening to Amy or The LSS, no matter how old or young they are. Of course there may be a few exceptions.

Oh thanks for the reply RedMaZ….I like to audit all kinds of music…I depend on folks like you to show me the way, give me the tips, etc. and for me this Amy woman did have a special sound combined with a clearness of voice. She really did get the entire ‘vibe’ and ‘emotion’ of that song transferred to me quickly which is remarkable and what I want a singer and a song to do for me….

And yes, I was a hit hard about the subject matter and song message, but the woman ‘nailed it’.

I don’t have too much of an intellectual take about any of the music world…just my own ear for what I like for the most part.
