David Cook Song Enough to Open My Mind

Posted: May 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

My daughter is graduating tonight. I won't tell you from what grade because if I say "college," I just sound old, and if I say "kindergarten," I just sound ridiculous.

But she is old enough to have taken it upon herself to make a video for the class. It will be shown after tonight's ceremony. And it has about 150 pictures of her and her classmates from the past 10 years. Very, very touching stuff.

The soundtrack for this tear-jerker is last year's American Idol champ David Cook's "The Time of My Life." Even though I had a long, long list of country songs that would've been perfect: Dixie Chicks' "The Long Way Around" or "Wide Open Spaces," Darius Rucker's "It Won't Be Like This for Long," Carrie Underwood's "Don't Forget to Remember Me," Trace Adkins' "Then They Do," Sugarland's "Already Gone" and Kenny Chesney's "Don't Blink." She ignored my country and went with rock.

While I'm the first one to admit that I put country music up on a pedestal and shun most genres that aren't up there, I have to say this Cook song * is pretty perfect. So much so, it could almost be a country song. It's not, but if you added some steel guitar and a fiddle or two, this could turn into one of those story songs that so many country fans could relate to. With lyrics such as, "Holding onto things that vanished into the air/Left me in pieces/But now I'm rising from the ashes/Finding my wings" and "I'll taste every moment and live it out loud/I know this is the time to be more than a name or a face in the crowd/I know this is the time, this is the time of my life."

What really gets me, and I know will make every parent in the room tonight come unglued, is the line about being out on the edge of forever, ready to run. That alone makes this song a country one. In my heart, anyway.

* Yes, fact checkers. I'm aware Cook didn't write it. It was penned by Regie Hamm.

You should check-out Cook’s debut album - there are a couple of songs there (which he did write) that could definitely be country cross-over successes. ‘Lie,’ for instance, has a lovely waltz time-signature, and the lyrics are beautifully sad. I want a Crossroads episode with David Cook and Carrie Underwood!

David is an amazing guy. The fact that he has spent so much of his own money or money that was due him because of performances he did somewhere on raising money for cancer research just shows us what a great and humble guy he is. What women doesn’t love or at least respect a man who can cry when something touches him. He is a great representative of my hometown Kansas City and I am proud to have him as our hometown hero. When he sang Permanent on the American Idol finale, who wasn’t touched to the very core of their being. There were quite a few tears being shed out their in that audience as well as at home. He has such a gentle and sweet spirit and Iam really proud of him. Plus, he looked really good with the redish blond highlights. WOW!

LOVE David Cook! I have watched AI since season one and vote every year and last year I was sooooo excited when my votes helped David win. In my opinion, David is the best American Idol winner since Kelly Clarkson. These two are my favorites, they can both sing anything and rock it out! Love David’s songs on his album some rock and some really touch you to the soul and yes he wrote or co-wrote most them on the album. Would love to see a Crossroad with David and Keith Urban(not Carrie, see enough of her already). Keith can rock it out with the guitar and David can rock it out with his voice what a great combination that would be! WOW!!!

Good for you for fessing up, Alison — don’t worry, you’re not the first to be unexpectedly “cookified. Be sure you check out the YOuTube of DC and Carrie’s duet at the opening of Disney’s AI Experience — definitely make a great couple on stage. Also, FYI, Cook has often mentioned early country influences (e.g., Garth Brooks). You should by all means listen to Avalanche on Cook’s self-titled CD, or catch it on YouTube. It’s huge in the Phillipines now - ha - but it definitely has a little country flavor. Not released here as a single — YET - but I’m guessing it will be by the end of the year.

David Cook does write beautiful lyrics that you hear in Time of my Life. In fact, the songs he wrote pre idol will make you cry. For such a young man he has such deep, heart felt meaning in every song. Check out not only his Album but his pre idol albums. This man is amazing in so many ways. It would be an honor just to know him and hang out for a day. He is the greatest.

Gotta agree that DC writes great songs, and the pre-Idol stuff will surprise people– he’s been writing remarkable songs for a long time. BUT he neither wrote nor chose to record Time of My Life — this song, by Reggie Hamm, was the winner of an Idol song contest, so it became the coronation song by default. It turned into something embraced by the public and went platinum for many reasons –was an Olympic theme and a GREAT graduation song, for example, and was sung at each American Idol concert last summer. It’s not really Cook’s style, though — however, readers of this strand might want to check out what he did during Dolly Parton week on season 7 of Idol — his own arrangement of Little Sparrow was phenomenal (listen to Studio Version on YouTube).

Love that song and the one he sang for his brother at the American Idol finale!! And yes, a Carrie Underwood and David Cook Crossroads would be the greatest show CMT has ever shown! If you got any pull at CMT please bring the idea to the table and have them give it serious thought!!
Congrats to your daughter and remember you’re only as old as you feel!!

David Cook has the most sexy voice and looks gorgeous too. On top of these he is also amazingly clever, writes his own songs which mean so much more to his fans, the listeners. I LOVE him, favourite AI yet.

David did an amazing version of Permanent on American Idol Season 8 finale. It is available on !Tunes. All proceeds will go to a cancer charity. This song was written by David for his brother Adam who recently passed away of a brain tumor
