Covers Songs and Hot Tubs With Kenny Chesney
Sure, Kenny Chesney has enough of his own huge hits to fill a three-hour show. But on Sunday night (May 17), when he returned to Dallas after his previous show had been rained out, he filled the night with some surprise cover tunes.
And I have to say, it sounds like one of the shows I wish I'd seen. I've seen Chesney enough to know every little nuance almost by heart. Every song intro, every antic with the band and every encore. So to hear the first few notes of "Please Come to Boston" would definitely make me look up from my beer and launch into my own chorus of "ohmygodIlovethissong." I'm also getting reports that he did George Strait's "The Fireman," which I love no matter who is doing it -- but especially when Tim McGraw's band the Dancehall Doctors did it for the movie, Flicka. Seeing Chesney take that on would keep it interesting. And while I've seen a dozen artists cover Alabama's "Dixieland Delight," I've never had the pleasure of watching Chesney do it.
There was also talk that after two hours of his own stuff, he reached into a deep pile of covers songs to do tunes from Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, David Allan Coe, U2, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Kinks, Van Halen, the Eagles, John Mellencamp and the Violent Femmes. The Violent Femmes? Seriously?
And as if that list of cover songs didn't have me kicking myself for not being there, listen to this: He did part of the show in bare feet because he "wanted to feel the stage under my feet, just let it all go." And, before the show, he iced down a case of Coronas and took it out to the parking lot where one group of fans had brought a hot tub on a trailer. And he GOT IN IT with them.
Cross your fingers that his outdoor show in Chicago is rained out and we get a repeat appearance like the one in Dallas.

Elizabeth says:
I would not cross my fingers for a Chesney show.
Kay says:
I’d like to have been in that hot tub.
Randi says:
This concert was AMAZING!! I had so much fun standing in the rain the first time, but was ecstatic to learn that he was coming back. He drove the the parking lots a few times to that he could tailgate with his fans. Its amazing that he re-did this concert for his fans. He just shows why he is consitantly entertainer of the year!
RedMaZ says:
Strait is not a songwriter. Wayne Kemp and Mack Vickery wrote The Fireman.
Bill Ansel says:
As the organizer for tailgate party featuring the hot tub in Frisco, I want to thank you for the publicity we are getting. The best part about our parties is that we party hard while raising money for some great causes. The name of our organization is Parties That Matter. So far this year we’ve raised over $18,000 for causes like the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital to name a few. We have a blast while doing it and we were thrilled to have Kenny come out to our party to see what we’re all about. Check us out on the web at partiesthatmatter.org for more details.
Katie says:
Bill, Thats great! I love the fact that some good comes out of the tailgateing. I’d like to know if Kenny new that’s what it was for? And did he give a donation?
Chris says:
I think Kenny gives to chariety’’s he doesn’t bring it out.Maybe he believes the Bible,Do for others but if you brag about it you may as well not have doen.Something to that effect. Most of his crew are from his hometown in Tenn.Thats great the way employment.Kenny is the greatest singer and best entertainer.
Lola10 says:
Kenny has more talent than Tim Mcgraw. Don’t bring numb nut into a blog when talking about Kenny. There is clearly no comparison. Kenny has the talent, the personality and no BAGGAGE!
Always Right says:
I bet it was a sausage fest in the hot tub.

kenny chesney is the best entertainer in the world.his voice is incredible.his songs are so great expecially in the duldrums of winter you feel like you are in a tropical paradise.i love him and his music and there is no disputing he is the best.
Janetgijoenurse says:
Kenny is a fraud, Reene found out and divorced him. He is also full of himself and aggorant as they come.
Janetgijoenurse says:
No wonder there are so many drunks at his concert. Never been to any country concert except Hank JR with so many drunks, and sadly Kenny promotes it even though there is alot of young kids at his show. Sadly that is why that concert fan got killed at one of his shows.
Janetgijoenurse says:
He may sell the concert tickets with his multiplatinum opening acts but he doesn’t sell his albums like some of of the others.
His Lucky Sun has only sold 700,000, his album with Don’t Blink as only sold 1.5 million, his new album hasn’t even sold 300,000.
That’s why he NOT the #1 best selling artist in country music for the decade and Tim Mcgraw is even though he has released LESS albums this decade.
