Spring Blossoms With New Roots Music

Posted: April 30th, 2009 at 4:02 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

The GreencardsOver the last few months, my mailbox has been bursting with independent roots music. Within this hand-picked playlist, you'll find adventurous bluegrass bands (such as The Greencards), quite a few alt-country bands and a hearty helping of singer-songwriters. If you find an artist you like, go see them play. Going out to hear a cool band is still one of my favorite things to do, no matter the season.

"Outskirts of Blue," the Greencards
"And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down," Los Lobos
"North and South of the River," Jeremy Garrett
"Wishing for a Rainbow," the Flatlanders
"Lost River," Michael Martin Murphey
"Freiderick," Sara Watkins
"Little Sparrows," the Handsome Family
"I Don't Belong to Anyone," Bonnie "Prince" Billy
"The Darkest Day," Eilen Jewell
"Pondering the Night Sky," Paleface
"Songs in the Night," Samantha Crain
"Back in Her Arms," Lost & Found
"Green Jacket," Mother Banjo
"Same Old Place," Newfound Road
"Dreams," Slaid Cleaves
"Learn to Love," Jonell Mosser

“Freiderick” is a wonderful instrumental- I love Sara’s solo album.

Awesome! I particularly like The Greencards, Sara Watkins and Samantha Crane. I plan to look into Slaid Cleeves, since so many people have been recommending his latest.

Not just his latest LW. Slaid Cleaves has released at least 7 albums in 16 years. Cleaves is a wonderful singer/songwriter, however he has released one CD of cover tunes called “Unsung”. He captures the essence of those songs too with his unique straight up Americana vibe. I suggest you go back a way and check out his earlier original music too. For example, his CD’s “Wishbones” and “Broken”.

Being this is friday, I hope you get a chance to see this. Soon Al will be floating in and filling up the front page with her mindless drivel for the weekend. She can’t stand to see Americana/Roots music get any attention. Which is just flat out too bad, because we’re not going anywhere.

Just one click away from listening to some great music, but my guess is, most won’t even bother to read this blog, let alone listen to the music listed. Their loss. They’d rather read Ali’s Pop posts, and then cut up the artists in the music they claim they love.
