Jason Aldean Is Caught in the Middle

Posted: April 23rd, 2009 at 10:40 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Jason AldeanMore than just a club act. Not quite an arena guy. That's the rock and the hard place Jason Aldean finds himself between. But with his latest single "She's Country" quickly ascending the charts (it's at No. 3), could he be headed in the big ol' arena direction? "We're kind of at a point now that we can go into the clubs and sell them out for two nights in a row, but we can't necessarily sell out a 15,000-seat arena yet. So we're somewhere in the middle," Aldean says. But then there's the story from Atlanta where a concert promoter had to turn away 1,000 people who wanted the chance to see Aldean play. That makes me think maybe he has outgrown the club scene. So now he has to decide to shoot for the stars or hold tight to that coveted opener slot on tour with guys like Keith Urban. Decisions, decisions.

How this talentless hack can sell-out 2 nights of shows is beyond me.

There are a lot of things beyond you. So what’s new?

Jason is far from a talentless hack. I would be willing to guess that you have never been to one of his shows.

I agree with you, Kevin. I saw Jason Aldean last summer when he toured with Tim McGraw and he completely stole the show away. He was amazing and really knew how to entertain the crowd. He is becoming one of my favorite acts out there and I can’t wait to see him again.

I have been a fan of Jason since I first saw him. I think he is great. Maybe “always right” needs to find a place that has an artist he does like. No need to be unkind.

I have seen him three times and I can’t wait to see him again. He always blows me away and I look forward to seeing him more than the main act. I did see him as the main act once and it was incredible!!

I just saw him in concert this week. and he is AMAZING live. His voice doesn’t chagne from studio to live like many artist today. He has an amazing stage presence and puts on a awsome show. I can’t wait to see him live again.

To each his own, we like what we like and if young girls like Mr. Aldean, that’s fine — but I will add my two cents’ worth: I saw Jason Aldean live this week, with the Eli Young Band and Cross Canadian Ragweed, and he was absolutely the weakest part of the show. His vocals are fine, but his musicians (except maybe the drummer) are sub-par and he did a Tom Petty cover that any bar band could have done much better. “She’s Country” sounds just like “Johnny Cash” sounds just like “Hicktown.” After he played his hit “Why”, he played his new single “Big Green Tractor” a couple of songs later and my buddy turned to me and said, “Damn, didn’t we just hear this song?” His songs employ every country cliche’ in the book. Yes, he’s energetic, he seems to be having a good time when he plays, all the teenage girls wearing pink cowboy hats seemed to like him, and I wish him well, but the music itself was simply not good. I also have a problem with musicians using backing tracks — some of Jason’s songs had a fiddle coming through the speakers and there was NO fiddle player and neither guitarist was playing the “fiddle” part on his guitar (I’m a musician and I can tell, and I was very close to the front). I will be attending a festival in a few weeks where he is a featured performer and I will just have to pass on his performance. I gave him a shot, I listened with an open mind, and I simply didn’t enjoy the music. To those that do enjoy it, crank it up and have a good time.
