New Music Videos: Scandalous Behavior! Break Dancing! And Real Country Music!
The five new music videos presented to the CMT New Music Video Evaluation team this past week covered the entire gamut of today's country music. Well, just about. You watch ‘em and decide for yourself. We have new ones from Rodney Carrington, Dierks Bentley, Old Crow Medicine Show, Holly Williams, and Jesse Lee.
Artist: Rodney Carrington, (with Toby Keith, Nick Searcy and Jennifer Aspen)
Video: "If I'm the Only One"
Director: Nick Searcy
Standup funnyman/singer Rodney Carrington acts in a very goofy -- and very funny -- domestic saga of a long-suffering husband and his ever-loving wife. Problem is, she's loving every other man.
Panelists' Comments: "Funny! Funny! Funny!" "Loved it!" "That actress is Jennifer Aspen. She was his wife in his TV series." "I didn't realize he could actually sing." "Like it a whole lot."
Artist: Dierks Bentley
Video: "Sideways"
Director: Michael Salomon
Contemporary country mainstay Dierks Bentley goes with a live video this time. He performs a raucous "Sideways" in what seems to be smallish club that is inexplicably filled with break dancers.
Panelists' comments: "Well, I never saw break dancers in a country video before. You don't see many of ‘em in country joints." "I like Dierks a lot, but I don't care for this video." "He looks like he doesn't feel comfortable doing this." "I love it." "Some very excessive break dancing there."
Artist: Holly Williams
Video: "Keep the Change"
Director: Philip Andleman
Holly Williams does not trade on her identity as Hank Williams' granddaughter. She has been pursuing her own strain of music. "Keep The Change" is a good example. This video is a quirky one-woman domestic drama that raises more questions than it answers.
Panelists' comments: "I really like her voice." "You don't see a close-up of her face for a long time. You don't know who it is." "C'mon. You don't use a chainsaw on a garage door." "I like those garage doors, though."
Artist: Jesse Lee
Video: "It's a Girl Thing"
Director: Mark Staubach
Jesse Lee is an up-and-coming Atlantic Records singer-songwriter. She co-wrote this with Nashville writers Victoria Banks and Rachel Proctor. The three producers on her upcoming debut album have worked with Taylor Swift, the Dixie Chicks and Carrie Underwood. This video is a sparkly, bubbly upbeat performance.
Panelists' Comments: "That has really grown on me. It gets better every time I see it." "I like the song. And I think I liked the video." "I actually loved it." "She's a New York country artist. Sounds good." "That's the first time I've ever seen a firing range in a video."
Artist: Old Crow Medicine Show
Video: "Caroline"
Director: Lee Tucker
Old-time music masters Old Crow Medicine Show prove once again why their live performances are so very popular.
Panelists' Comments: (Instant applause). "Very cool!" "That audio is not synched." "This is different from most videos we see these days." "That is totally country music."
Consensus: Rodney Carrington's "If I'm the Only One" debuts on Monday (April 20) on CMT in hot shot-rotation. Dierks Bentley's "Sideways" debuts Monday in heavy rotation.

Tom says:
Not a bad selection of music videos, Rodney Carrington was hilarious. That Old Crow Medicine Show video was great.
Tom says:
I forgot to mention Dierks Bentley could’ve done without the break dancing.
Vicki says:
I agree with Tom. I loved the Carrington video and was quite surprised by Rodney’s singing. The Old Crow Medicine Show video was the best! I like Dierks sideways but yeah…forget the break dancing.

Not Carrington’s funniest stuff. His x-rated most vulgar material is the best. Bentley continues to get worse. Awful song and video. He deserves the break dancers. Who’s he trying to be…the next Frankie Ballard? Swaller Holler(or whatever tf that is). Holly Williams carries on the tradition, but this video is strange. Jesse Lee…typical Mainstream Pop Country assembly line fluff. Might as well be Pickler, Swift, or Underwood. Same thing. OCMS, are a very good band.
Tom says:
I agree on almost all parts. I hope Dierks Bentley isn’t going to get worse than that video. As for Rodney Carrington this video was good for the limits he had. But the OCMS video was by far the best of the bunch.

Really liked the Rodney Carrington video. Loved how it ended with the nod to adoption. Toby as a baby, what a hoot!
Estelle says:
I have heard Jesse Lee at TIn Pan South (writers week in Nashville) and she is definitely NOT fluff. THis girl is serious about her music and has an incredible range of songs. I can hardly wait for the album to come out. She has been writing country since the age of 10 and singing too. I know, I heard her LIVE!

Is Nick Searcy the one in Rodney Carrington’s video who runs across the lawn in his underwear?
George Edwards says:
No topic for this but I think the C.M.T. needs to tell the Dixie Chicks that they are sorry about the damage that they did to them. Have a good one.
