The Greencards Fascinated by a New Ukelele

Kym Warner, The GreencardsOnce holding the title of national mandolin champion in Australia for four consecutive years, Kym Warner of The Greencards is no stranger to playing musical instruments. On the Grammy-nominated band's new album, Fascination, which drops Tuesday (April 21), Warner contributes not only his vocals and songwriting skills, but five different instruments as well. On the album, he plays the mandolin (see left), mandola, bouzouki and xylophone, as well as a new instrument for him -- the ukulele.

"We had a real rejuvenated energy coming into recording this [Fascination] and it was experimentation to a certain point. We were just going to try things. We said if there's an instrument lying around in the studio that we think sounds good, someone's going to teach themselves a little part on it and we're gonna go with it," Warner said.

And he did just that. "I bought a ukulele to write some stuff because I find writing on different instruments brings out a whole different melodic sense. That's what we were going for, trying to come up with different things. So, I bought a little uke on a trip to Austin one day and I wrote a few songs, a couple of which ended up on this record," he said. "It was fun. Everyone was in good spirits. It was a really, really fun process, both the writing and the recording."

The first time I heard this band, I just shook my head in amazement. The next day, I had their album.

Another group the Grammy voters recognize, even though the bulk of Country music fans have never heard of them… and even with Whitney’s plug, probably still won’t bother checking out.

You’re right solo. From my observations most Music fans never check out any other music than what’s played on the radio. That’s why I have a hard time considering them fans of music. The Greencards are great, and the ukulele is a lot of fun to play, and are making somewhat of a comeback(even though the author of this blog spelled it wrong in the title) I have 8 ukulele’s. I had 12 but I gave some away. An unusual story goes along with how I aquired all of these Ukulele’s. Also I wanted to mention to anyone who didn’t know that the instrument in the picture above is not a ukulele. That is called a Mandolin.
