No Apology Necessary, Carrie Underwood
In an adorably spontaneous moment during her entertainer of the year acceptance speech at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Carrie Underwood made a flirty remark to Matthew McConaughey. No harm, no foul. So why on earth is she apologizing? He's the one who went on and on telling a story about his hook-ups based on lies. (He told some girls he was George Strait's custom boot-maker -- and did they want to see said white ostrich quill boots out in his car.) So if anyone should say "my bad," it's McConaughey. Underwood merely tied her speech into his, saying, "I want to see those boots, Matthew." No easy task when you've just made history. Being able to think on your feet like that certainly cements your status as entertainer of the year. So now Fox News is reporting that Underwood said backstage, "I just blanked. You want to say something eloquent in a moment like that, and I embarrassed myself. I'm sorry, Matthew. I'm sorry to my family." I just hope somebody told her that she needn't apologize. If it's a crime to make a slightly sexual comment during an awards show, then I can think of about 20 artists who are going to jail.

shawn says:
I absolutely agree, no apology needed at all, I don’t think from either one of them, I thought it was hysterical…..more thank you speeches should be that cute and spontaneous.
MusicalJustice says:
Reba would have said it if Carrie hadn’t…it was a good joke! Go Carrie!
Beth says:
U R so awsome but u dont need to make an apology!
Melissa says:
I cannot believe she is embarrassed… I found it super funny! She blanked its okay! she won top honors of an award show! which not many other ladies can say that have done.. and her first year nominated for it! Girl should be living it up… Not being sorry… Cause all the fans know, Matthew, her family, friends, etc. All know she was excited to have won! I thought it was a great speach… and the spin and little scream at the end made it even better! Congrats Carrie.. it was well Deserved!
Always Right says:
Lame
Alison W says:
WHAT! I can’t believe she felt bad about it. I laughed when she said that. It was funny. I didn’t even take it as being sexual/flirtatious at all really.
Holly says:
Bless Carrie’s heart. She’s so sweet, even if she thinks she’d offend anybody she apologizes! Just a true showing of how good of a person she is!
If anybody needs to be apologizing over what they said or did on Sunday night, it should be Jamie Foxx or John Rich for bringing politics into a show that I watch to ESCAPE politics.
star says:
she acted like a child!!
RedMaZ says:
So she wants to bump uglies with McConaughey. Big deal. I’m sure he’ll service her as long as he don’t get a look at those Alley Oop feet…
Jill says:
Carrie was adorable. She immediately said Im just joking. Everyone with a sense of humor should have known it was a joke. For heavens sake, Camila was sitting right there. It was a joke and a good one at that. Carrie has a great sense of humor. Mike has a great sense of humor. Matthew started the whole thing so he has a great sense of humor. Carrie is so careful of her younger fans that she was ontop of it with an apology just in case offense was taken. No need for that apology Carrie, Jamie Foxx was the bad boy of the show.
trisha says:
Carrie seems way too uptight, that was one of the first times that she seemed normal and human to me. She doesn’t need to apologize, especially when you think of all of the idiotic things celebrities say and do every day, that is nothing to feel bad about.
Martyp says:
Don’t be fooled..Carrie is not as innocent as she puts on….she is dating Mike Fisher, a hockey player for the Ottawa Senators. Anyone who knows anything about hockey players knows that….they are “players.” If she chooses this kind of guy well, I am sure she was somewhat serious about Matthew….I don’t blame her…he is a hunk..I say..Go Carrie!! Heck ..even Reba makes sexual comments..they are country singers ..not nuns and not dead!! Afterall…sex and alcohol are the key ingredients to the majority of good country songs!
Ron says:
I thought it was great to because it wasn’t scripted or anything. Thats when country stars really shine.
Musicintheblood says:
Mike Fisher is also a very Christian guy with strong beliefs. She didn’t need to apologize but perhaps she felt that she needed to for those who might have taken offense to it.
Brenda says:
I thought it was a great moment. A very real moment….a very girlie moment. She just said what most women in the audience and at home were thinking….’show me those boots Matthew’
sleepy525 says:
Thank you Alison for the rebuttal to a stupid reporters nit-picking trying to make something out of nothing. Carrie thanked God, her fans and her family but that was not in the headlines.
MartyP … You don’t know what you are talking about.
hotelmotel says:
There is nothing for Carrie to apologize for. Its really silly. She did nothing wrong.
Melissa says:
I agree….Carrie doesn’t need to apologize. It was funny.
personanongrata says:
I am a 50 something parent/grandparent and I laughed at her ability to think on her feet..she was really darling when she squealed and spun around, also!! Poor child needs to cut herself some slack!!
boostergirl says:
I was thinking the exact same thing. I think a lot of women were. He’s incredible. I was actually thinking what a beautiful couple you two would make. You both seem comfortable with who you are. Don’t even think about apologizing and frankly, it’s just the media making a big deal about it anyway. Normal, everyday people didn’t even give it a second thought.
Avery says:
No apology needed at all! I thought it was so cute and funny. Carrie said immediately she was joking and everyone knew that! No need to worry Carrie at all…it is fine!!
jbenkelman says:
She wasn’t out of line at all. It was a joke, and eveyone laughed including Matthew. She is just humble and doesn’t like to be portrayed like that I guess. Can you blame her? Its just who she is, and its what makes her so loveable!
Congrats on getting Entertainer of the Year, again, I don’t know how many times i can say it, but we, your fans, are SOOOO proud of you!
NoDoubt says:
That was her best line of the night, but taking it back now she seems a little prudish. Come on, Carrie’s people; an apology for a non-controversial, mildly risque comment at an awards show for (mostly) adults. The really young kids might not have even gotten it, the older ones didn’t think anything about it.
Should have left it with “what happens in Vegas…”
star says:
you fans can be proud of her because the academy didn’t give her this you did, so most people and other artists will NOT think much of this even when the fans are buying the cds going toconcerts etc. IT STILL WAS THE ACMS THE ACADEMY IS SUCH A GREAT THING THAT SHE WILL NEVER NO ABOUT THE FEELING OF WINNING EOTY BY THE ACADEMY! SO YOU FANS AND HER CAN LIKE IT FOR WHAT’S IT’S WORTH NOT MUCH. PS AND FOR FVOY I GUESS THAT WAS OK.
Lisa says:
Star, Star, Star boy do you and a few others (MartyP, RedMaz and Always Right I’m looking at you) have some issues to work through LOL.
You bet Carrie’s fans helped make this happen! What a concept that the hardworking people who buy CDs and pay for tickets get a say in evaluating who is Entertainer of The Year. What a concept indeed. Every one of the nominees in the EOTY category had huge fan bases with equal opportunity to vote. Case closed.
Congratulations, Carrie! Your fans are very proud of you. Ignore the crazies =) I agree with the far majority above who said it was clearly just a joke. There was nothing wrong with her comments. Frankly I thought they were very funny. She has never once let her fans down.
I thought the ACMs were amazing this year! Every single performance was terrific. All of the winners well deserved. I also thought every single artist exhibited a tremendous amount of class Sunday night. From Kenny to Keith to Taylor to Carrie and all the rest there appeared to be genuine respect, class and dignity displayed.
WalterL says:
Great to see carrieu win the award and again thank you to everyone who voted for kelliepickler on powerpicks and cmt top20 and purecountry12 pack.Have a great day all!Take care all!
DIAMOND says:
I THINK THE ACM’S SHOULD STAY WITH THE ACADEMY PICKING ALL OF THE WINNERS. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE ACM’S I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO THEM EXCEPT THIS YEAR!I AGREE WITH ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO SAID CARRIE’S NOT READY FOR THIS AWWARD BUT WE ALL NEW SHE WAS GOING TO GET FEMALE VOCALIST!
RedMaZ says:
Lisa, As I said I’m all for it, but doesn’t she have a boyfriend? He must feel like the biggest punk on the planet now that his girlfriend has announced on national television in front of millions of people that she wants to have sex with someone else. Now THAT’S funny!
glory2001 says:
I do not think John rich should apologize, everybody enjoyed that. Country music has always defended the poor man, like the farmers, etc. It is a good song, and Carrie needed not to apoligize either, that was a funny comment.
Jamie Foxx does need to apologize, I did not like his comments
Tenn says:

i just dont think its right for carrie underwood to be given everything. she hasnt paid her dues yet. so when will she..
Karen says:
Dont forget the album re-recorded with Elvis, she performed at the show which honored the military plus the numerous donations made to feed the needy, the Stand Up to Cancer benefit and Im sure the list goes on this year–I know she won three People’s Choice Awards, won album of the year at American Music Awards too!! Carrie has paid her dues to the point she had given up on a music career and went to school for journalism/broadcasting!! She played fairs, etc but just was never discovered!! Miranda Lambert and Lee Ann Rimes were discovered on Start Search!! Carrie just took a different route and ended up on American Idol!! As far as apologizing Carrie you dont have anything to apologize for because you are truly blessed and loved by your peers, family and fans!! Way to go Girl!!
Karen says:
I meant Star Search–Sorry!!
floyd starr says:
so tell me how many other artist has randy travis allowed to record his music.
greatdivide says:
I thought she shown she actually has a personality for the first time when she said it.Then she apoligized. There goes that idea.It was never news UNTIL she said she was sorry. What a phony little girl she still is.
BUT as far as people saying she didn’t deserve the award because she hasn’t paid her dues or been around long enough, the name of the award is Entertainer Of The “YEAR”,not YEARS.It’s not the life time achivement award she won. FOR THE YEAR,she had more hits than the other nominees,out-sold them all in CD sales and downloads, and had a huge sold-out headlining tour..Makes sense to me she won.
floyd starr says:
well i do beleive taylor swift beat her in sales so your wrong there greatdivide
greatdivide says:
I was talking about the nominees for that particular award (Entertainer Of The Year) which Taylor wasn’t nominated for.So I wasn’t wrong there Floyd!
Kate says:
STAR
Please stop Yelling. Shouting isn’t going to make what you say TRUE. It’s nothing but sour grapes. and just so you understand the award was voted on by the INDUSTRY as well…but it makes no difference to me…and any one of the male stars would have grabbed it with both hands with glee had they won…and then what STAR…would your rant have been the same huh?
rae says:
redmaz- why would mike feel like the biggest punk in the world??…carrie was joking around with matthew..and also he is the one that told his story about getting lucky…so it was just fun entertainment!!…this only happens to jealous, insecure boyfriends/girlfriends who have self esteem issues, otherwise i dont think its a BIG deal, i doubt Mike is upset about it…
Kate says:
floyd starr
Yes you are right..Taylor’s ‘Fearless’ has sold more than Carrie’s Carnival ride BUT..not by much..(when you’re selling millions a couple of hundred thousand isn’t that great of a gap) and when you consider that the deliberate marketing of TS records to Pop are propelling TS sales(and there’s nothing wrong with that on a business sense) it makes Carrie’s country sales that much more compelling..so the way I look at it..Taylor has sales and number 1’s
Carrie has the complete package: sales, stand-out vocals, and many number 1’s..So I believe Carrie has the advantage, but that doesn’t mean that Taylor is not successful on the contrary she is at present, very, very successful and has a huge fan base.
REAL says:
If people don’t accept Carrie’s EOTY award seriously then you have to not accept Kenny’s EOTY award seriously either.Your gonna have to say Kenny won EOTY only three times because his last one didn’t count because it was fan voted.I believe by destiny that it was set up to be like that.Because had she been the first to win the fan voted EOTY people would say oh hers doesn’t count. But if you do that then you have to dismiss Kenny’s win last year and whoever wins next year whether it’s Brad,Keith,or Kenny because it will most likely still be fan voted and Carrie won’t be nominated next year because she didn’t tour this year.So you see your words of hers doesn’t really matter or count have no merit.Because that means Kenny’s win last year doesn’t count and he’s only won it three consecutive times.
marina says:
i am glad that the acm’s respected the fans and allowed us to vote for, entertainer of the year, after all we are the people who go to their concerts, listen to them on radio, watch them on tv, etc…why shouldnt we have a say to we think best deserves it…it was also voted by the academy as well as the fans they just allowed us to participate. “star” you have your opinions which i diagree with your whole statement and it doesnt make sense and clearly you were out voted by alot of people, you can whine and cry all you want but the award was well deserved..actually they all deserved it brad, keith, kenny and george are all wonderful but there can only be one winner and that was carrie…i find that you are disrespectful by implying that carrie doesnt deserve her win, you are a sore loser..it does mean a lot to carrie and it does mean a lot to the fans and to the academy “sorry to disapoint you” and i doubt that her country peers do not take her seriously im sure they are classy people who give credit when credit is due you can learn a thing or two from them …question: so are you saying since this was fan voted that if george, kenny, brad or keith would have won the award, …the academy and the artists and everyone would have not accepted this as a true accomplishment because fans were allowed to vote?? hmmm interesting star you are so wrong and ignorant and you are contradicting yourself i dont have the time to explain it to you especially since you seem like such a immature angry person…carrie is the entertainer of the year like it or not theres nothing you can do about it.
DIAMOND says:
CARRIE HAS NOT PAID HER DUES YET IN COUNTRY- POP MUSIC THAT IS WHAT SHE SINGS END OF STORY.
sheanea says:
WELL I LOVE POP COUNTRY MUSIC!! AND THE OLD SCHOOL COUNTRY MUSIC NOT MY STYLE…AND APPARENTLY SO DO ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE YOU DONT LIKE IT OH WELL TIMES ARE A CHANGING HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE WORD EVOLVE, LOOK IT UP,
END OF STORY!!…
Lori says:
Anyone who states the Carrie has not paid her dues is wrong. being a contestant on American Idol is a very grueling process. Carrie has a beautiful voice-she can sing anything. She has consecutive #1 hits-every single released goes #1. Carrie does have the complete package-the look the voice the star quality. She deserved to be nominated and win the EOTY. As for the comment about the boots, get over it, it was a joke. No harm. And to categorize all hockey players as “players” is ignorant and immature. You should not comment on something you know nothing about. I am proud of Carrie for winning that award-she earned it and it was well deserved.
alexis says:
american idol was stressful, being judged in front of millions having a week to do commercials/picking the right song and memorizing the song in such a short time, i heard idols talk about the grueling process this show gave her the opportunity to showcase her talent and then we all fell in love with her. she came to country and it wasnt all roses people from the industry did make some smart remarks about her sometimes right in front of her she had to struggle but she prooved to everyone that she’s not just a contestant who won a show but shes an artist who is a serious artist. from the grnad ole opry to the american music awards everyone in the industry has accepted carrie it wasnt an overnight experience for her she did work hard, if not even harder because of american idol, she has grown so much and she is writing on her 3rd album now, she has toured many cities and made so many fans 137 shows has so many #1 songs, shes a chart topper, and her record sales are impressive, how has she not paid her dues..do you mean because carrie hasnt been in music for 10 yrs or how many yrs is paying your dues…so jessica simpson has she paid her dues since her career started 10yrs ago??…carrie has so many accomplishments under her belt its crazy shes worked hard for everything she has done…how has carrie not paid her dues you mean has not paid her time because thats what its about…forget the achievements right? its about paying the time in country…wierd!
floyd starr says:
well she hasnt paid her dues like the other artist has.. she has had it all given to her. and she herself admitted to it..
dnawise says:
Carrie has absolutely nothing to apologize for. Her joke was perfect for that moment! The crowd went wild too!!! The only people who would find the joke offensive are those who have nothing better to do with their time than to try to find the littlest thing wrong with what someone said or did. This a big to-do about nothing!
nahla says:
floyd star- she has paid her dues i dont think anyone in music in any genre gets anything handed to them for free they all work hard to be recognized and awarded for their achievements if artists got handed their accomplishments then all artists would be awarded and successfull. the grand ole opry, cma’s, the grammy’s and the acm’s, they have all given her the accolades for her work are you telling me then that they have disrespected other artists for carrie since apparently according to you she has been handed everything she has?? if thats what your saying then your insulting the people who believe in her in the country industry i dont believe they hand out things for free they award the artist who is deserving. also carrie has a huge fanbase we buy her records, go to her concerts, anything to do with carrie we support 1000%, and we didnt hand anything to her she deserves it because she puts on a great show, and she blesses us with her music. she is a great entertainer and thats why she won,its cool not to like carrie i really dont care everyone has their personal choices but to put someone down and you cant even give credit when credit is due you are full of excuses. carrie has paid her dues…and the country industry agrees with it and so do her fans…as for the naysayers “oh well” carrie is still going to be around regardless, of the excuses you make up.
Penelope says:
Gosh! I wish that was me up there stammering like that!
isabella says:
i love carrie she has amazing vocals and beautiful songs that are uplifting, fun, and of course with attitude!…her concerts are so great she puts a lot of hard work into it just to please the fans, her record sales, her #1’s, the opry, etc..”wow” she’s just “incredible” and im so proud that a small town girl like carrie is living out her dream…in my opinion i do think she deserves the entertainer of the year, all the nominees are amazing and the academy picked the right people for the fans to be a part of the voting process. carrie has many fans that will always support her and its nice that she brings us all together, as for the people that dont like her i respect that you have your opinions just like i have mine and carrie doesnt expect everyone to enjoy her as a person and her music that is just not possible to please everyone but for the people who do love her and follow her this is who she does it for…..she makes music, she headlines her concerts…in her words “we are her bosses and as long as we allow her to do what she does, she will, she doesnt want to be fired”. (i thought that was funny when i heard that in concert)..carrie will keep on going regardless of those who are against her…its about God, family, and fans for her. and i hope God continues to bless her because she’s a wonderful person and she will never know how her music has helped me in my not so good days…thanks carrie you are one of a kind!
hotelmotel says:
To me, the “she hasn’t paid her dues” argument is beside the point.
I’m more interested in whether the music is any good than whether the artist “paid dues.” If an artist can make good music even though he or she hasn’t paid their dues, then I’ll support that artist. And if an artist has “paid dues” but makes mediocre music, then I see no reason to support the artist.
Maybe artists who have paid there dues are more likely to make good music. That seems plausible to me. But I would hold nothing against an artist who makes good music merely because he or she hasn’t paid their “dues.”
floyd starr says:
hummm.well im glad your all happy with her. i personally arnt impressed with her. i think a singer should have to go a few years singing there songs in all places before given awards like ETOY..im mot the only one who feels this way.
floyd starr says:
im on this blog because its about her duuh.
celeste says:
Floyd - you make no sense. She won because she deserved to - she has been accepted by the industry because she has talent.
Taylor S. is a teen star - she will be successful for several years than be gone - she is pretty and a talented song writer but can’t sing.
Carrie can sing anything and will be a lasting star.
barb b says:
floyd get over it she deserved
eoty she toured february to december
hard work paid off well deserved
Rita says:
Well I voted for her and I am glad she won. I like all the other artists too but when it came down to it I love her voice.
carlena says:
i think taylor swift will be here for a long time i dont think she will be here for a couple of years and then dissapear..her career is solid and she keeps breaking records. although there are some who are wishing taylor to dissapear and fail, i dont think that is going to happen if anything she will only get bigger in the future. taylor isn’t my cup of tea i dont like her music myself, but i think she is a talented guitar player and pianist, song writer, and she sings just fine, she doesnt have the versatile vocals where she can sing high and low notes but she’s still good theres someone for everyone, plus as a person she seems very well grounded and i admire that about her. carrie underwood in my opinion did deserve the award for “entertainer of the year”..she has worked hard for it and has continually prooved herself in country music, in my opinion all of the nominees deserved to be “entertainer of the year”…if anyone of them would have won it was well deserved but of course i was rooting for carrie, and lets face it carrie has a huge fanbase it is a no shocker that she won, i think that the fans should vote since we are the ones paying to go to their concerts and so on it is our right for our voices to be heard….no matter what anyone says it is what it is and carrie again made history with being the 7th women to take it from the men!
Freda says:
Carrie just said what alot of redblooded women were thinking…I Loved it !!! How CRAZY and STUPID to whoever thought she needed to apologize…I heard alot more comments that night that needed it more….
becca says:
considering “entertainer of the year” isnt the lifetime acheivment award, i think carrie deserved it just fine. she won this award at the same period shania and reba won it in their careers. shania and reba both won this award on their second albums, and carrie also won this on her second album. carrie didnt win this award any earlier than they did
