John Rich's Political Polemic Leads the March of New Music Videos

Posted: April 3rd, 2009 at 5:27 pm  |  By: Chet Flippo

The CMT New Video Evaluation Team looked at three new music videos this week. John Rich tees off on Washington and Wall Street for abandoning the Motor City with "Shuttin' Detroit Down." Raul Malo waxes melodic in a barroom in "Hello Again." And newcomer Sarah Darling plucks on the heartstrings with "Jack of Hearts."

Artist: John Rich
Video: "Shuttin' Detroit Down"
Director: Steve Lamar

John Rich used this song and single and video to replace his previous single, "Another You," when "Shuttin' Detroit Down" began to catch fire at radio stations. Now, the impressive video stars Mickey Rourke and Kris Kristofferson in the saga of Detroit under fire.

Panelists' comments: (Applause.) "That is so powerful." "Hard-hitting. You can't say enough about it." "Amen!" "That is a hot shot video if ever I saw one."

Artist: Sarah Darling
Video: "Jack of Hearts"
Director: Ryan Smith

Sarah Darling manages to look and sound dazzling while singing a lament about a playboy who has "an ice cube in his chest." Where his heart should be, you guess. Darling has acted in a number of music videos, especially in a well-known role as a convincing mannequin in Big & Rich's "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)."

Panelists' Comments: "That's a good-looking video." "She reminds me of a young Lee Ann Womack." "It's a good song, but it feels a bit long." "That's exactly what I thought."

Artist: Raul Malo
Video: "Hello Again"
Director: Not listed

Big-voiced Raul Malo, formerly with the Mavericks and now enjoying a solo career, checks in with a very melodic new song, which he proceeds to sing in a barroom, over the sounds of loud pool-shooting. This is from his new CD, Lucky One.

Panelists' comments: "Man, I miss that voice." "It is really good to hear Raul sing again." "You forget just how great his voice is and how few great singers are around." "Remember Roy Orbison?"

Consensus: John Rich's "Shuttin' Detroit Down" will debut Monday (April 6) on CMT in hot shot rotation. From the hold section, both Craig Morgan's "God Must Really Love Me" and Justin Moore's "Small Town USA" will also debut Monday in medium rotation.

this guy has good ideas for songs but i dont consider home country at all, just someone with a bigmouth acting like he is a big shot. IF he is worried about the FAT CATS why dont he give up his Mansion and his Million Dollar Tourbus

Why would he give up his mansion and bus because of the fat cats of the auto industry and wall street screwing people? That don’t even make sense. I’m not the biggest John Rich fan in the world, but he worked for those things. If he were to lose them, the Goverment sure as hell wouldn’t bail HIM out.

This video hits close to home for so many American’s. Thanks to John Rich for documenting this trying time in America musically. He is a true American that works hard for what he has. Great song!!!!

I love this video and the song. It really made me cry because it is what so much of us are feeling. I think John Rich is a great writer and I have always loved his music. I do not think he gets nearly the recognition he deserves. So many of his songs send cold chills down my spine. I admire anyone that is as successful as he is but still remembers where he comes from. What an inspiration and a truly talented country musician. Great & Video.

John Rich comes across to me as a very passionate man about what he believes. I attended the George Strait Artist of the Decade event and John Rich had the most heart-felt tribute to this country music legend/hero. He was sincere in his words and was very genuine in honoring King George. I felt a tug from within as he shared why he chose the song Amarillo to sing for his performance. John Rich is real and what you see is what you get. He loves what he does and I commend him for making a platform that will reach out to real people, Americans, who are living through tough times. We do need to wake up and find compassion for those who are suffering while our Big Brother is taking us for everything they can and our children too…right before our eyes and there’s nothing stopping them.
