Jamey Johnson Album Helped Change ACM Awards Criteria

Posted: April 3rd, 2009 at 11:01 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Peter Cooper, music writer for The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville, has gone on record -- and on video -- with his ACM picks. He applies his dry wit and nine years of experience writing about music in Nashville to his predictions and pontificating about Sunday night's (April 5) show in Las Vegas. The most interesting part, to me, is that the ACM folks changed the criteria for the contentious album of the year award. Cooper uses the example of Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song as one that was critically acclaimed but didn't meet the sales criteria of 300,000. Only nine contenders met that number this year. "So check this out," Cooper says. "They changed the criteria." So now Johnson has a shot, even though Cooper predicts Taylor Swift's Fearless will win that award. He thinks Carrie Underwood will win top female vocalist and that George Strait will win top male vocalist. And that even though Kenny Chesney criticized the entertainer of the year voting process when he won the award last year, Cooper predicts he will do so again on Sunday. Win ... not criticize.

Ugh, I would like to watch the video but every time I try it just keeps replaying that darn Pepto Bismal commercial over and over again.

So few albums sell 300,000 these days, they should be able to nominate any album that sells over 100 copies.

I AGREE WITH THE CHOICES MADE AS FAR AS THE WINNERS EXCEPT FEMALE VOC. SHOULD GO TO TAYLOR!

Sorry sweety, Taylor can’t sing. She is one very lucky girls because she has kids like you supporting her but vocally she is nowhere near Carrie’s league. Carrie should and WILL win Female Vocalist!!!

It’s a shame Taylor even made the list over Martina.

I think Jamey Johnson should win for ‘Album of the Year’ AND ‘Male Vocalist’. I don’t see the big deal in George Strait, and once you’ve seen Jamey Johnson live, you’d see that his voice is UNBELIEVABLE. What a talented, talented man he is.(And very gracious.) So much what country music needs to get back to. Too bad the ‘critics’ can’t see that, which will make alot of people not see him either. Hey, I guess I should be happy he was nominated. He just deserves so much more. Listen to this CD,his voice, the lyrics, the music, the band,-you’ll see and hear what I mean,-he’s a legend in the making.

So let me get this straight…Jamey Johnson, the man who has spent the last 11 weeks on the charts with such artists as Johnny Cash, The Nouveaux Honkies, Rodney Crowell, James Talley, The Flatlanders, Fred Eaglesmith, Gretchen Peters, Tom Russell, Steppin’ in it, Adam Hood, and Romi Mayes, has been reduced to being nominated with the likes of Newfield, Paisley, Adkins, MG, Swift and Underwood? From an industry who has decided to change the rules at any given moment during mid-stride? This Pop industry is a complete joke and an embarrassment to the genre known as “Country”. After listening to all the atists I’ve listed, which genre better fits Johnson’s music? Roots Country or Kiddie Country?

That Lonesome Song helped change the criteria for album of the year and he is changing the face of “country music”

Thanks for the reply ottonut. You may be the first person here who knows all the artists I’ve listed that Johnson is currently on the charts with. So in your opinion, which face of “country music” is he changing? Roots Country or Pop Country? or both, and in what way? Also what is your opinion of Tom Russell’s music? Steppin’ in it?

All I know is…Jamey Johnson’s CD is the best I’ve heard in a long time.
