Bucky Covington Pines for the Past on New Song
Hindsight is 20/20. You don't appreciate what you have until it's gone. And all those other clichés about retrospectiveness. They all make for good country music. But now that Kenny Chesney has moved away from songs about wanting things to be like they used to be ("The Good Stuff," "There Goes My Life" and "Don't Blink"), it's time for someone else to pick up that lyrical slack. And Bucky Covington's just the guy. When you throw his rich drawl into this message of pining for the past, as he does on his new single "I Want My Life Back," it sounds so heartfelt that I can hear the yearning in his voice. He seems to have really mastered that throaty Kid Rock sound on this latest tune. Plus, any time you open a story with a guy who has holes in his shoes and is pouring whiskey in his coffee, it is hard to resist.
Covington didn't write the song, but to me, that doesn't make it any less moving. "This song struck me the first time I heard it," he said. "It's such an emotional and powerful song that really hits home with today's times and I'm proud to be able to share the positive message." The chorus might seem narcissistic ("I want my life back/I want that house that I called home/I want that job I worked for 22 years/Before I got laid off/I want what I had when I laid down in the arms of a woman that believed in me/And the man I used to be"), but there's a bigger picture here. That is, if you would just appreciate what you have when you have it, you might not be in this predicament. At least, that's what I take away when I hear this song. The album won't be out until September, but "I Want My Life Back" hits country radio today (March 30).

This song is really good. Bucky’s voice is incredible and although I have not heard it live in concert yet, the video taken at his Jacksonville, Florida concert was excellent and it was an acoustical show to boot! That’s how awesome Bucky Covington and his great band are! He will sing this song like everything else he does, with heartfelt emotion. I am so glad Bucky’s back too!

Welcome back Bucky!!!

Mastered Kid Rock’s throaty sound? I’m more impressed with singers that master Lefty, Merle, Hank Sr, or George Jones.

I pine for the past as well. Such as when Bucky and Taylor weren’t claiming to be country singers.
