Tim McGraw's Countdown to Country Thunder

Posted: March 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Tim McGraw in concertEvery summer, like clockwork, I go to the Country Thunder Music Festival in Twin Lakes, Wis. But I've never been to the one in Florence, Ariz. It's right between Tucson and Phoenix, and the fun begins next weekend. And when I scroll through the lineup, it's killing me that I won't be there. Even Tim McGraw, who has never played this Arizona stage, will be there, and it's his only concert until June. So may I live vicariously through you if you're going? Report back here if you catch biggies like McGraw on Friday (April 3) or Alan Jackson on Saturday (April 4). I even want to hear all about the openers like rookies Zac Brown Band, Jake Owen and The Lost Trailers. So go, enjoy, have a funnel cake, and then come back here to share your reviews.

I wouldn’t travel a half a mile to see Tim Mcgraw anywhere. He’s a pathetic performer.

Well, I would so love to be there, and he is in my opo the best entertainer he is oh so awesome, he did my gosh so many encores, everyone was on their feet, when he was here the entire place just went nuts, I knew already I would love it but I was so happy when everyone just as did I adored his show, nobody wanted it to end. He still rules in my opo. Oh and for you Kenny fans, his tickets are over 2hundred a pop, alittle less than Taylor Swifts nope not kidding, her’s are going for over $4 and if you want the floor add a couple more hundred and you got the idea. It sure is sad that folks can get away with charging these insane prices, I wouldn’t pay it, I would’ve liked to have seen George Strait but nope I can’t afford to put out 500.00 for 2 tickets and they are so far back its nuts, but I did have to say well it is George but for them to be asking twice as much for Taylor her first headlining tour, I kept hearing all her shows were sold out, it sure will be sad for her if she doesn’t sell out here and its only cause folks gotta be so greedy.
Anyhow sorry for going way off topic, I am also hoping for some amazing takes on how this show goes, unless something amazing happens and hubby takes me hmm birthday or perhaps an early anniversary always thinking lol…. oh but to see Tim again I so would love it!!! Happy Weekend All!

    Hi Alison,

What are we going to do this year, like you I’m a huge Country Thunder, WI, fan but the historic Rascal Flatts Wrigley Field concert lands on the same night as Tim McGraw at Country Thunder and Alan Jackson is playing in Peru. What a night for country music!

My husband and I was at the concert last night in Florence, AZ to see Tim McGraw. He was terrible, I don’t know if it was the sound system or he wasn’t feeling well. We were truely disappointed and I love Tim McGraw’s music, especially his new song. Ww waited in the windy dusty desert only to leave before he finished.

Tim McGraw Friday at Country Thunder in AZ was downright lousy!!!! Started the show 20 minutes late and didn’t even play for 1 hr!!! For a superstar that makes the kind of money he does that is not excusable. There were 45mph winds and at least Tracy Lawrence was great!!!!!!

Had the four day passes to Thunder here in AZ. Went out Friday and Saturday. Caught the end of Heidi Newfield on Friday. She did a great job as well as Tracy Lawrence. Had never seen Tim McGraw live before and was a little disapointed that he got a late start and seemed to blow right through his set like the wind rippin through the desert. Not the worst performance I’ve ever seen but I was expecting more from one of my favorite artists.
Saturday was a blast. Not as windy. Caught the end o Jack Ingram and saw Neal McCoy, entertaining as all get out. He really puts on a great show. Thoroughly enjoyed Blake Shelton and screamed myself hoarse during Alan Jackson. The man has a presence bigger than the stage he’s on. Awesome.

The sound guy for Tim McGraw should be fired on the spot, and he should hire Tracy Lawrence’s sound people. McGraw’s Friday night performance at Country Thunder in Arizona was the worst sounding performance I have ever heard. Maybe the sound guy just doesn’t know that outdoor venues all that well, or something. Why the hell wasn’t there a sound check? I don’t know if Country Thunder or McGraw is to blame, but droves of people left early due to the poor sound quality. I hope they make some changes before Wisconsin, otherwise they are in for a rude awakening.

We were at Country Thunder in Florence, AZ in our RV April 1-4. First time doing Country Thunder and first time RV-ing. The weather was brutal (cold and windy), surprised by that since it was warm and spring-like the week before! Next year we know to take warm parkas with hoods and long-johns! Jeans and sweatshirts just didn’t do the trick, even bundled up in blankets. We learned some lessons: opt for the VIP reserved seat tickets with Hospitality tent access if you can spring it, definitely the way to go, with catered buffet meals and a climate-controlled tent with a viewing platform to escape from the elements! We did general admission lawn seating (tote your own chair) and got trampled by the unruly crowds on Saturday night, people stepping over us, in front of us, and onto us blocking our view. All the shows were really good EXCEPT Tim McGraw…I must say he truly sucked!!! We saw him in Glendale at the arena the year before with Faith and that was an awesome show. Tim really let his fans down at Country Thunder. He didn’t look very good (might have been sick) and sounded worse, and only played for what seemed like 30 minutes….a huge letdown after waiting all day and night in the blowing winds to see/hear him. Montomery Gentry was outstanding, what a great show they did! Alan Jackson was great, but by then the Satuday night drunken crowd was so out of control that we retreated early back to the RV..being General Admission was a mistake, we were tired of being trampled and couldn’t see a thing due to the mobs crowding in front of us when the show started. Next year we are doing it right….already bought our VIP tickets with Hospitality Tent access, and preferred camping site closer to the event stages. Book early! Next year is already selling out. Unofficial rumours (that they were actually spreading at the event) are that Garth Brooks may come out of retirement to headline in 2010. Another tip: go armed with an arsenal of anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer in your purse/pocket; the porta-potty outhouses get nasty quickly and they are slow to replinish tissue and hand sanitizer, which were non-existent by day 2. No way to wash your hands out there at the event grounds; I paid the price…got really sick with a nasty gastro-intestinal bug which hit me the day we came home…was sick for a week!!

I also went to Country Thunder in Florence for the first time and camped out also. The first night our generator got stolen and we were by a porta a potty that I swear was never emptied. Although it was windy and dusty having lived in AZ for 20 years you just expect it and get use to it. Enjoyed every performance except for Tim McGraw. We have seen him many times perform and know how awesome he is the performance he did on Friday night was just awful he acted like he didn’t care and the sound was awful and after waiting all day to hear him we didn’t even get 45 minutes of tunes. BAD TIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sorry to hear that Tim McGraws performance at Country Thunder in AZ. was so bad, but I just saw him last night at Country Thunder in WI and he put on a great show. I am looking forward to going back every year to Country Thunder USA in WI.
