Does Anyone Not Love George Strait?

Posted: March 24th, 2009 at 11:11 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

I knew I'd regret my decision to watch the ACM Awards at home. That I'd wake up one day, too late, and be furious that I was not boarding a plane to Las Vegas. And this is it: Practically every artist I love as much as I love George Strait -- ones like Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Lee Ann Womack, Jack Ingram, Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift and Sugarland -- are all playing the Academy of Country Music's let's-honor-Strait special that tapes April 6 in Vegas. Tickets are still available, so I either need to quickly get a ticket and find a hotel room or mark my calendar for May 27 when this special tribute will air on CBS.

While I enjoy alot of Strait’s music I lost a huge chuck of respect I have for him when I found out he went to Africa to hunt the big cats and killed two.

I’m not a huge fan… I think he has some amazing songs and still sounds great live! and no one can take that away from him.. but for him to constantly win album of the year every time he puts and new album out, is crazy! Honestly his music now compared to what it use to be isn’t great! Having said that I am really glad they are honoring him this year at the ACM’s he proved he deserves it!

Ah yes…George Strait, the Pat Boone of Pop Country. I’ll pass.

I’ve always thought King George was George Jones.

    Posted: March 25th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

King George is GEORGE STRAIT and he’s as far from pop country as they come. That’s more of the likes of Garth Brooks and Rascal Flatts. George was, is, and always will be the best country music has to offer. It don’t get much more authentic than that.

I like Strait but there are others that are more country than he is/was. Listen to his “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind” cd or his other 80’s stuff and tell me it is as country now as it was then.

I like much of George Strait’s music, but I disagree with AshleyT that “he’s as far from pop country as they come.”

George Strait is the very embodiment of pop-country. He consistently releases music designed to succeed on the pop-country radio charts and to be bought by fans who like other pop-country artists.

As for George Strait being “authentic,” I’d say he is a mass-media image just like Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, and others are.

Also, George Strait has consistently modified his music (often just slightly) to fit in with current trends. Listen to the “Pure Country” soundtrack, and compare it with FM radio trends around 1991. Listen to “Run” and “Stars on the Water” and compare with trends going on in 200-2001. Et cetera. Et cetera.

George Strait is a pop artist. That’s not necessarily a bad thing: a lot of pop music serves a decent purpose and a lot of pop music is better than music that can more credibly claim to be “authentic.”

In a way, I have to admire Strait. He has used marketing to convince many people that he isn’t “marketed.” That has to be one of the biggest accomplishments possible for a marketer and a manufactured star.

Are you saying Strait is not a Pop Country act. Care to debate? Pack a lunch…you’ll need it.

Gee I like the way they OMIT Toby’s name in the above statement too, he is there to honor him too. George is okay but his voice doesn’t do anything for me. I need range and Toby has that.

George does big game hunt there was an article in country weekly. He said his son and him went to Africa his son killed a big lion and they both got a leopard. Look up leopard hunting. They are bated to a kill area in the dark where sometimes they use spotlights.

“George did not(if he even did it)”. So not only do you not know if he did it or not, you’re claiming it was legal? Do you believe everything that is legal to be appropriate? Do you have any moral fiber in your being?

Yes I know what Pop Country is, and thank you for asking. That shows you have an interest in learning something about music. Pop Country is music with general appeal to the masses that is overproduced and overplayed for profit for record labels. In musical terms it is essentially conservative in that it attempts to resonate with a large segment of it’s target demographics rather than pushing artistic boundries.

If you have anymore questions about music, please feel free to ask. I will help you even though you seem to approve of animal abuse and torture. It’s not too late to change your ways. God have mercy on you.

The big game animals have a price. So you can kill any of them if you have the money. Hank Jr does this too. He had a museum on near music row Where his trophy lion was on display along with photos of the kill.

Red, do you have any clue what pop country is?

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: March 27th, 2009 at 8:54 am

Yes I do. I explained it to you. If you’re having a hard time understanding this, you may want to try doing some research on your own so you can learn it at your own pace. Once you understand basic music fundamentals, it’s quite simple. I think you can do it. Good luck.

Hmm, so then you must consider Merle, Johnny, Waylon and Willie Pop Country too then, right?

See how silly you look? Again…

  • RedMaZ says:

Merle, Johnny, Waylon and Willie are Americana artists,, now. They were all Pop Country artists at one time, but that was at least 20 years ago. Pop Country was much different then it is now. Dwight Yoakam,, Patty Loveless,, ,Steve Earle, Marty Stuart, and Ricky Skaggs were all played on Pop Country radio too at one time. They are now all Americana artists too.. Times change, keep up with it or get left behind. When was the last time you heard anything new by these artists on today’s Pop Country radio, or awards show? You really should get caught up on today’s music scene.. You’re living in the past.. Today’s Pop country don’t recognize these artists. That’s ridiculous.

“Willie and the Wheel”, is currently at #2 on the Americana airplay charts, and “Naked Willie” at #1 on the True Country charts…Johnny Cash is at #32 on the Roots Country charts with Steve Earle at #43…Ricky Skaggs is at #23 on the Bluegrass charts, after spending many weeks at #1.

Why would anyone think these guys are Pop Country? On the other hand, I didn’t see Strait’s name listed on any of those charts, but the last time I listened to a Pop Country station, I did hear some of his music being played, there, right along with Taylor Swift.

Well I have to say I went to the tribute and in Vegas. Let me tell you it was one of the greatest experiances of my life. So many incredible names, almost everyone that was at the ACM was there and one that wasn’t at the ACM the night before. Garth himself showed up and was very gracious, heartfelt and stood back to let George take of the new artis of the decade. I was honored to be such a part of history it was truely an AMAZING event!!!
