Getting Jake Owen Red-Carpet Ready
Having a great voice is kind of its own reward. But you know what else is a really nice reward? An ACM award. Something that tells the world that a bunch of people think you're a singer with chops. And now that the ACM has already named Jake Owen the winner of this year's top new male vocalist award, he's going to need something to wear to the show in Las Vegas on April 5 in case he wins in the top new artist category.
So last week when he was in Chicago -- one of the best places to shop for serious men's fashion once you've outgrown the whole PacSun and Ed Hardy phase -- he found a couple hours to hit the stores with me. Places like Barneys New York, Prada and David Yurman. Now, I'm no celebrity stylist, but I know what looks good. And with Owen's scruffy good looks, pretty much every thing he tried on had him looking fantastic. The classy suits, the hipster tone-on-tone shirts, the dinosaur bone dog tag necklaces. It all looked good. Especially with the patent leather boots Owen had on.
Maybe he was just humoring me, but Owen seemed determined to shed the I'm-too-cool-to-care mentality of so many artists who walk the red carpet in jeans. He seemed like he did care. Enough to carve out time to walk around the Windy City when he really should've been at his sound check for his concert later that night. (He was late, but he did make it. And the show later that night was a thoroughly entertaining two-hour showcase of almost all the songs off his new album Easy Does It plus crowd faves from his debut album.)
Whatever he ultimately decides to wear to the ACM Awards show doesn't really matter. I'm sure Owen and the other nominees -- Julianne Hough and the Zac Brown Band -- will all look their best as they compete for the uber-ultimate top new artist award. But if he does wear that Prada suit, I better get a shout-out. Just saying.

Hey Owen, Don Johnson called…he wants his suit back. Did you sleep in that thing or what? So…Zac Brown band is nominated for top NEW artists? More proof of how messed up Pop music is. That’s almost as bad as when Jack Ingram won best new artists, after 12 years and at least a 10 albums. It’s true…selling out has it’s reward(for lack of a better word).
