Keith Urban Gives a Stadium Show in Nashville Club

Posted: March 6th, 2009 at 3:56 pm  |  By: Chris Parton

Keith UrbanKeith Urban put on a private show last night (March 5) at the Rutledge, a small Nashville club, but somehow packed nearly his whole stadium sized show onto the tiny stage. Massive light racks sat behind the band, amplifiers and monitors occupied any space on stage that didn't have a musician on it and control boards littered the club's floor. With any more sound and lighting gear, there would have been nowhere to stand. As the venue filled to its capacity of about 300, Urban took to the stage to perform songs from his upcoming album, Defying Gravity.

To me, the experience was far more exciting than the last time I saw Urban at Nashville's LP Field during Kenny Chesney's Poets and Pirates tour. Those stadium shows are so impersonal and on such a huge scale that they almost don't feel real. But in this small, sweaty little club everything was obviously real, with no JumboTron necessary. He previewed "Kiss a Girl," "Til Summer Comes Around" and "Only You Can Love Me This Way," along with seven or eight of his hits, including "Sweet Thing." It was cool to be so close to a big-time performer since shows like this don't happen that often. However, Urban was having enough fun that he did say he wanted to do a full tour of club venues. After seeing the difference between the two types of shows, I'm all for it.

Sorry I’ll past he is more of a rock star than country star. Also many of his uptempo songs sound alike, the music.

Oh how I wish I could have been there! He is the best LIVE performer I’ve ever seen in concert, and I’ve seen a bunch, and I cannot wait for this new album. He loves playing music and playing live, and it shows!!!!

Sounds like you had an awesome time. So glad you got to see and hear Keith live. He and the boys do put on an awesome show, don’t they? As for Keith being rock and not country….there are many types of country music, not just one. Same for rock music…many types. Country rock music has been around for a long, long time and will never go away.

If it wasn’t for Keith Urban, I would not know country music existed. The old, traditional country music is twangy, whiney, sad, and quite pathetic. It took the ‘new boys’ to bring country music to the level that it has reached. No one in country music has a passion for their profession like Keith Urban has!

Janet, I’m sorry for you that you feel that way. Good music transcends genres. In my opinion, Keith Urban simply makes great label-defying music.

Don’t worry about anything “Janet” says. She’s a die-hard Tim McGraw fan and she uses every opportunity to put down one of Tim’s competitors.

I agree whole heartedly with Bettye…Keith Urban is the new rock pop country like all the other newbies and he IS the BEST live PERFORMER!

I would have given anything to have been there ! I just love Keith Urban! He does put on a great live show. I have only got to see him once because he does not come to many towns close to me which is Springfield, Illinois!
