Winning a Grammy Is Just the Beginning

Posted: February 20th, 2009 at 12:27 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Robert Plant and Alison KraussTwo million people watched the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8. And then, a lot of them ran out and bought music immediately afterward. Both the winners and the artists who performed on the CBS broadcast have seen big, big sales since the show. According to USA Today, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant's sales were up 715 percent over the week before. Taylor Swift saw a 44 percent increase. And country faves Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood and Kenny Chesney enjoyed good post-show numbers, too, proving that you don't necessarily need to win to do well. You just have to get a nomination or be on the show, and good things somehow happen.

I believe these Grammy wins for Plant/Krauss will educate some of the masses. This awards show was probably the most Pop fans have ever been exposed to Americana Music. Of the five Grammys they won, Robert Plant said he was the most proud of the Americana win, and is proud to be associated with this music industry/genre.

I have Plant/Krauss’s cd and I couldn’t find it more pop and AC than anything else. I’m not a TS fan but at least her original tracks before mixing are somewhat country. I think Plant/Krauss get the country slip only because of Krauss previously being in country categories.

Alison: I think the Grammys had an audience of close to 19 million viewers not 2 million.

Great win for Allison and Robert. They won several and should be proud.

vp should come back and explain themselves further. They own the album, but think Mel Tillis, Townes Van Zandt, and Doc Watson penned songs sound like Pop Music? I’ve never heard anything even remotely sounding like Sam Phillips “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us”, on any Pop station, I don’t care what genre you’re talking about.

I think vp needs to do some research to understand why this album that was registered with the Grammy’s as an Americana album, has so many different sounds and styles coming from it.

Plant is a rocker and most of this album does not sound country it sounds like light/AC Led Zeppelin and Plant solo. The most pop fans have ever been exposed to this kind of music was when Led Zeppelin and Plant solo songs were played on rock radio all day. Plant said in the old days they would call this album selling out. Plant and Krauss also performed light versions of old Zeppelin songs at concerts and I don’t like it.

An interesting collaboration would be Keith Urban or Brad Paisley and Plant. At least then Plant would have some guitar back.

Nycole i cant agree with you more, I have yet to see how either one of those acts are considered COUNTRY

RC, Buddy Miller has been on tour with Plant/Krauss. In case you didn’t know(and I’m sure you don’t) Buddy Miller is an amazing guitar player. Buddy has many CD’s out too. Either solo efforts or with Julie.

Darren, Plant and Krauss are Americana artists. Americana Music is not just limited to Country by any means. If I recall, out of 5 Grammys won by Plant/Krauss, only one was for Country..

Well then Red they shouldnt be associated with COUNTRY MUSIC than should they?? And the same with Carrie Underwood hack

Americana Music is Roots music based on the traditions of Country. It is also Roots music based on the traditions of Rock, Blues, Bluegrass, Folk.. .

As solongsowrong said, “Raising Sand” features songs written by Mel Tillis, Townes Van Zandt, and Doc Watson. So to answer your question, Yes…Plant and Krauss should be associated with Country Music. .

As far as Underwood, she’s just another Pop Country singer to me, but I’m sure she’s a nice person

Well RedMaZ, you made a comment on your first post that these Grammy wins for Plant/Krauss would educate some of the masses. If some of the ones posting here are any indication, they’re just as confused as ever.

Here’s wishing Buddy Miller a speedy recovery with his heart attack problems.
