Nashville Musicians Flip the Switch for Earth Hour
At a Thursday morning press conference in Nashville about this year's Earth Hour, Kathy Mattea, Jo Dee Messina and Big Kenny challenged local businesses and citizens of the city to ‘go dark' for one hour. Other country musicians including Dierks Bentley, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Lady Antebellum and Wynonna have also pledged to partake in the event. According to the World Wildlife Fund, more than 50 million people participated in last year's Earth Hour and hopes are to get more than a billion people involved this year. The event will take place worldwide on March 28 at 8:30 p.m. Earth Hour 2009 is designed as a way to take action against the world's dangerous climate change. For one hour, cities will simultaneously turn off all non-essential lights. Anyone can make a difference as well by simply turning their lights off in their house for 60 minutes.
After a brief introduction by Mayor Karl Dean, Mattea took the stage (incidentally, at the Stage, a well-known Nashville honky-tonk) to sing Jean Ritchie's "Now Is the Cool of the Day." Later, Big Kenny told the crowd that he became involved with the project after riding in a low-flying airplane and seeing scars on the land near his hometown, then followed with a few jokes and a brief acoustic performance. Nashville was chosen as only one of seven U.S. cities designated as flagship locations for the third annual Earth Hour event. Other cities that will be participating include Los Angeles, Chicago, Paris, London and Hong Kong.

I think I’ll do the opposite. I’m going to turn every light and appliance on in my house, then go drive around in my SUV for an hour. Take that planet Earth! jk
Tennessee Dan says:
Tex, you should know that one of the main reasons Earth Hour is being supported in Nashville is because of the extreme bio diversity of the Southeast Rivers and Streams - we rival the Amazon River and Mekong Delta in terms of number of species.
Climate change does not just mean “global warming”. It refers to all kinds of challenges to our ecosystems like protecting water quality and preserving wildlife habitats so people can continue coming to this part of the country to hunt, fish, camp, hike and just enjoy the South in general.
Jason says:
Quit listening to talk radio Tex. It’ll rot your brain.
