If You're Not in It for Lunch, I'm Outta Here!

Posted: January 29th, 2009 at 10:56 am  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Shania TwainOne of my friends is editing a concert that's probably going to air on public television, and the singers are covering Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia" - but the group opted to change a few lyrics just to be safe. So, instead of relatively harmless lines about making love in the bedroom, they are now earnestly crooning about "making lunch" in "my lunch room." I have been laughing about that all morning, and now I've been thinking about pitching them some country songs for their show.

Shania Twain's songs would be perfect for this: "(If You're Not in It for Lunch) I'm Outta Here!" "You Win My Lunch," "Lunch Gets Me Every Time" and "I'm Holdin' on to Lunch (To Save My Life)."

Or how about "It's Your Lunch" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill? ("It just does something to me ... it sends a shock right through me ...") or maybe "Let's Make Lunch."

"Lunch Without End, Amen," by George Strait ("Let me tell you a secret about a father's lunch ...") or maybe "Carrying Your Lunch With Me" ("Baby all I got is this beat-up leather bag ...") I also like "You Looked So Good at Lunch."

I hope I'm not ruining these Judds songs for you: "Let Me Tell You About Lunch," "Lunch Is Alive," "Give a Little Lunch," "Young Lunch" and of course, "Lunch Can Build a Bridge." ("Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time.")

I could go on and on, but I'm kind of getting hungry. ... So I'll fork it over to the readers. Any tips?

When I was dating my wife, we’d tell her younger nieces that we were in the camper “Making Toast”.

I sure wish I had access to all these wonderful message boards. It won’t let me log in nor does it have a log in on the page. It comes up connection interrupted. What is going on?

    Taylors “Lunch Story”
Carries “The more boys I date(?) the more I love my lunch”
or Randy Travis’ rendition of “I told you lunch!”

    Jamey’s “In Lunch”

    Brad’s “Waitin for a lunch”

Brad and Carries duet “Oh Lunch”

You could do it with almost any song..

This blog is way too funny. What about the song by the Notorious Cherry Bombs - “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Lunch All Day Long”? :)

“Let’s Make Lunch” is my FAVORITE. Hilarious.

“Lunch is a Sweet Thing,” Faith Hill.
    “Lunch Story,” Taylor Swift.
“Heaven, Heartache, and the Power of Lunch,” Trisha Yearwood.

Going back to the archives, how about “Cowboy Lunch” by John Michael Montgomery?

Or even further back in the country archives — Emmylou Harris’ “(Lost His Lunch on Our) Last Date.”

Oh, there are just too many great suggestions to make. There’s that Merle Haggard classic, “It’s Not Lunch (But it’s Not Bad).” They could go with Hank’s “Lunchsick Blues,” that’s always a crowd favorite. They could recreate Johnny Cash’s version of the thoughtful “Give My Lunch to Rose.” Or, y’know, really anything from Sugarland’s Lunch on the Inside album.

Darius Rucker recently had a hit about the girl who said “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About Lunch.” Even though she may think about it “She’s Not The Lunchin’ Kind,” and if she did overindulge a little she probably “Ain’t Going Down (’Til the Lunch Comes Up).” We know none of those songs were about Dolly though, because she sang “I Will Always Love Lunch” and might even be part of Garth’s “American Honk-Tonk Lunch Association,” where the motto is “Lunch Like You Were Dying.”

    Here’s a few extras:

    “Today My Lunch Slipped Away”
    “Straight Tequila Lunch”

Craig, this one is hilarious! Here is my contribution:

    Livin’ on Lunch (Alan Jackson)
    Live, Laugh, Lunch (Clay Walker)
If This is Lunch (Deana Carter)

Non-country (as long as we started with Simon and Garfunkel):
Feel Like Makin’ Lunch (Bad Company)
All You Need is Lunch (Beatles)
    Sunshine of Your Lunch (Cream)
    Lunch Stinks (J. Geils Band)
All of My Lunch (Led Zeppelin)
Lunch Ain’t for Keepin’ (The Who)
    For Your Lunch (Yardbirds)

That non-country list is funny, too. I was thinking about that song by Heart, “All I Wanna Do is Make Lunch for You.”
