Baby's Got Rhythm. Literally.

Posted: January 28th, 2009 at 11:39 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

You know how you always thought your baby had rhythm? Well, she (or he) actually might. A new study in everyone's favorite science mag, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, illustrates how their little minds work. It says that brain scans of babies as young as two days old show they can perceive musical patterns. (The babies had similar patterns of electrical brain activity as the adults in the study did.) And it also showed that the babies can follow the beat. So now that you know how innate your baby's rhythm may be, you should make sure that he or she is picking up on all the right beats. Like the ones in country music. Clearly, it's never too young to start.

Allison, you might be interested in a book called “This Is Your Brain On Music: The science of a human obsession” by Daniel Levitin. FASCINATING. Also well-written and easily understood. Not written in layman’s terms, but not so high brow that you need a ladder. Scholarly, but not dry, and full of fascinating facts about artists and music that you already know. The author used to be a music producer so he’s not some nerdy scientist.

After reading this book, the story about babies’ brains doesn’t surprise me a bit! What a wonderful thing to know about the children of our favorite country music stars! Imagine how deeply ingrained good music will be in the lives of kids like Huck Paisley and Sunday Urban!
