Jonas Brothers Surprise Nashville With Star Power
Why I Want to Live in Nashville, Rationale No. 86. Things like this never happen outside of Music City -- things like a half-dozen brilliant country artists joining pop music's reigning boy toys onstage. That is exactly what happened at the Jonas Brothers Sunday night concert at the Ryman. Had I been one of the fortunate 2,400 fans screaming along to their music (yes, I still love their music despite the cell-phone breakup saga), I would've also had the pleasure of watching Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, Phil Vassar, Vince Gill and Amy Grant perform with them. Tim and Faith were there too. USA Today reports that Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas sang along on McBride's "Independence Day," and then McBride sang their "When You Look Me in the Eyes." And that they did "Waitin' on a Woman" with Brad Paisley. And that everyone got together at the end for an "American Pie" singalong. The last time I saw a JoBros concert, my teenage daughter and I reviewed it together for the Chicago Tribune. She really loved it. I kind of loved it. But this one in Nashville sounds like it would've been my kind of pop concert.

There’s nothing more exhilarating than boy toys on the Opry stage. Maybe someday soon they will become members. That’d be hott…
Sarah says:
I can’t stand the Jonas Brothers [& no, it has nothing to do with the Taylor/Joe thing]. I just don’t like 3/4 of their songs haha. But that does sound like it was really cool! I love all of those people that joined them on stage!
Steph says:
that’s interesting that all those country stars joined them.
King says:
The Jonas Brothers = Country Music.
K says:
Can’t stand the JB’S, don’t know why (or how) tbey should ever be in the same sentence as “country music”
toph says:
Martina McBride and Jonas Brothers are my two favourite Singer/Band; i would love to see their performance
Vicki says:
I believe with Martina and Faith, it’s because their kids love them and then as parents you know how it is, you hear the music constantly. So no wonder Martina knew their songs.
Jeff Givens says:
Wow, what a concert. I am mostly a country music and bluegrass fan, and I thought I would really dislike the concert. I took my teenage nephew to see it. I was surprised as heck. I really liked the way the JB handled the entire show and the way they melded with the super stars of country music. I’m sure that the country stars’ children had a bit to do with why they were there, but also, they had a tremendously young audience to expose to their own great hits. The crowd loved every second of the concert, and anyone who indicates “they shouldn’t ever be on the same stage with the country starts” is inept and out of touch with diverse artistic talent. Moreover, anyone like that needs to get a life. The concert was great, and I am 63!
Morgan! says:
I completely agree with Jeff Givens! although I am 18 and a girl, I am still a fairly new fan of the Jonas Brothers. This time last year I would never have even thought to go to one of their concerts, I had never given their music a chance. I am SO thankful that I became a fan and went to that kind of concert. It was nice to see that they truly do have musical talent and kind hearts. They harmonized amazingly with the artists and sang their hearts out. Plus, they are very good role models, they are not putting on some act when it comes to their personalities, it is easy to tell the difference between someone who faking it and someone who is genuine. They are genuine :) & I think that is probably the best part about them :)
dan says:
why is that every country singer has to sing with someone outside of the country music industry. they have nothing to do with one another. now i like how types of music but the jon bros cant sing but they are still better then fall out boy and some of the other singers out there but why
RedMaZ says:
First of all, not every country singer HAS to sing with someone outside of the country music industry. That’s a ridiculous statement, and when they do it’s usually within their own industry. Pop acts usually sing with other Pop acts, just as Roots artists sing with other Roots artists. This is common.
RedMaZ says:
By the way Alison. Pop music is not a genre, it’s an industry. Everyone you mentioned in you original blog are Pop acts.
lizisawesome says:
Great way to put it Red. I think the Jonas Brothers are dumb. They really aren’t that good of singers either. And them performing at the Ryman is almost a disgrace. And excuse me King, but where did you get that Jonas Brothers ever equaled country music? Sorry though if that was intended to be sarcastic.
OhSoMuchGood says:
Hooray, Jeff Givens!! (I’m a 29 year old female fan.)
I hope more people see what talents the Jonas Brothers are in the near future…they have great, strong musical roots and diverse musical influences and interests, and they push themselves not only to keep up with their pop thing, but to grow as artists and try new things. That’s what this event was like…very casual, very jammy, VERY awesome! Especially with the Christian artists they invited, it felt very personal. And they are really doing a great service by repeatedly exposing their fans to their influences.
If you really think they can’t sing and can’t play, you can’t know much about them. Not that you have to, but don’t go judging from ignorance because of who their record label and marketing company are. So, their pop stylings aren’t for everybody…but what music is? There are plenty of people who “hate” country. Why HATE anything is beyond me. Turn the other cheek, already.
Anyway, they are really not an “act”, while they are lucky to have cracked massive success in the pop world, I’d say the pop world (and Disney) is more the lucky one to have found them.
Steph says:
I, for one, am not a JB fan, but don’t see anything wrong with a non country group having appreciation for country and vice versa. If they “go country” and get accepted as country I will be disappointed, but in this case they were at the Ryman strictly as guests. I am really sick of this protective, territorial attitude that is rampant on country and usually in all the wrong places. I’m not saying the Ryman shouldn’t be preserved as the highest country institution, but it has had cross-over and non country act preform there before, with no affect on its integrity. Its like any outside artist is not even welcome in the same phrase as a country artist because it would undermine the integrity of the country artist. That’s ridiculous. No one I know listens to one genre of music. So why should artists as people only associate with their industry peers? The JB’s were respectful and even humble about being there. They have a genuine interest in music seems like. They got to preform with people they like and respect. sounds like an ok thing to me (although not personally in my sphere of interest).

HeatherAndy says:
I am a pretty big JoBro fan AND a HUGE fan of country music. It is what I grew up on, and the JoBros are one of the few artists that I listen to outside of country. This sounds like it would have been an Amazing concert. I went to one of their concerts in Atlanta, GA over the summer and they did a wonderful rendition of Shania Twain’s “Gonna Getcha Good.” I think that they can handle the country thing just fine. Good on them for trying. :)Plus I would’ve loved to have heard Martina sing “When You Look Me In The Eyes” it is one of my favorites.
