New Videos From Darius, Jack, Kevin and Nickelback Touch Down This Week
CMT's New Music Video Evaluation team hunkered down just before Christmas to glom the last new videos before the holidays. Darius Rucker brought some holiday cheer, Jack Ingram has a life tutorial, Kevin Costner takes everyone for a day at the track and Nickelback bring a glimpse of apocalypse. A little something for everyone.
Artist: Darius Rucker
Video: "Winter Wonderland"
Director: Wayne Isham
Darius Rucker's holiday entry is a live version of the annual classic "Winter Wonderland." And it sounds like a Texas shuffle with heavy fiddle and steel. But lo and behold, where on screen is the steel player? And are those sync problems that can be heard? Well, it's still a fine little video for this time of year.
Comments: "I'm disappointed in that." "The sync is definitely off." "The video is good for the season, though."
Artist: Jack Ingram
Video: "That's a Man"
Director: Brian Lazzaro
This song has been getting attention for Jack Ingram for awhile, with its message of what it means to be a man. By that, the song says, it means being responsible and doing what's right and doing what needs to be done. And the video gives graphic examples of some different men doing just that.
Comments: "I'd love to have some of that Jack Ingram DNA. He just gets better and better looking as he gets older." "It's a good-looking video."
Artist: Kevin Costner and Modern West
Video: "Backyard"
Director: Rory Karpf
Kevin Costner provides a long, loving look at his beloved NASCAR with this whiz-bang visit to the track. Lotsa fan action here and plenty of drivers, including Richard Petty up close and personal. It's like your own full-color, very fast NASCAR scrapbook on screen.
Comments: "Great NASCAR footage." "That's a coup, getting Richard Petty. He doesn't allow himself to be photographed much." "Kevin looks great." "Looks like he had a lot of fun doing this."
Artist: Nickelback
Video: "Gotta Be Somebody"
Director: Nigel Dick
Nickelback open with very meaningful, we're sure, glimpses of the moon and earth from space. Then the group are playing the song in what looks like an ancient amphitheater. But, what's this? Giant cracks appear in the earth and everything begins crumbling around them. Then suddenly, they're somewhere else, still doing the song, but more cracks and destruction all around them.
Comments: "Love the song." "The video is way different than I thought it'd be." "I'd love to read the treatment for that video." "You know, with different production, that's easily a country song." "Do we really need the end of the world at Christmastime?"
Consensus: "Winter Wonderland" and "That's a Man" will both debut Dec. 22 on CMT in heavy rotation.

Joe says:
Mr. Chet I am 24 years old, not around when you wrote alot for Waylons Albums….Your one lucky dude to do that…
I have read your Nashville skyline article on the state of country music, but how can you promote Nickleback on cmt, when you want country music to survive?
I hate how MTV owns CMT…MTV Is a disgrace to the world, and CMT Should play real music, and get rid of the crappy reality shows that air on cmt.
Kim says:
Nickelback? uh…what? they have never ever ever made any move anywhere near country. how did that happen? They are popular enough without every single MTV affiliate helping them out!
Chet, what are you doing? Please tell me that was just a fluke video you thought you’d bring to out attention that has nothing to do with country. you’re supposed to be the reliable one, remember? “gotta be somebody” is no where near country, and NB’s music is even farther as a whole. at least the likes of Darius’ and Kid’s “all summer long” were close. but Nickelback…?
Zelma says:
Thank you, Joe!
RedMaZ says:
Suddenly we have some country music purists here? When did this happen? The line between Pop Rock and Pop Country croos paths quite a bit, as does Roots Rock and Roots Country. So what’s the big deal? I see no problem with Nickleback being mentioned. It’s all Pop Music.
chet flippo says:
Joe: One aspect of Waylon’s career and music that has been often overlooked was that he performed and played with groups ranging from the Grateful Dead to Metallica. I never knew any artist who had a more open mind than Waylon….
twilightrocks says:
Why did you mention nickleback.
Joe says:
Chet can I email you, I got some questions to ask you about Waylon…Would love to talk to you about Waylon…
I love Waylon, and have 16 of his albums, That I proudly display in my music room. I even went out and bought the
Waylon Return Album.
I would love to know about the man, and his music, and how he did things…All I listen to is his music, along with Mr. Johnson
Joe says:
And I do read the commentary about on the albums, and I love your commentary on some of the albums…
Who knew when you wrote those years ago, Waylon and Willie would still be a driving force today….
His music will never die and his legacy will always live on….
J.R. Journey says:
@RedMaZ:
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Bravo.
lizisawesome says:
Oh my gosh, is Nickelback seriously being considered country now? That’s just a little bit ridiculous. Their song is in no way country. At all. But you know, country can just keep being stretched to cover really anything now right? Give me a break CMT.
Miroslav says:
Amazing, it’s very good
Samantha says:
yea I like nickelback, but not for Country
danielle says:
