Colbie Caillat Gets Creative in the Can

Colbie CaillatWhile some carry a fresh towel or yesterday's news to the bathroom, Colbie Caillat makes sure to bring her guitar. This, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter told me, is where she sometimes writes those insightful and soulful lyrics that so many have come to love. Caillat nabbed a record deal after becoming the top unsigned artist on MySpace and has since had two No. 1 pop hits with "Bubbly" and "Realize."

"I write in the bathroom," she told me smiling, "just because it sounds so good. When I wrote my first song, I was in my parent's bathroom because it was on the other side of the house and I didn't want anyone to hear me. That kind of became my safety zone."

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for myself. It seems the only gift I ever had in my parent's bathroom was the gift of pulling off the door handle and locking myself inside. Perhaps they should have left me there ... and given me a guitar. But then again, I don't think my "Teardrops on My Guitar" would have been such a splash.

This is so funny - only goes to show a good writer can write and sing anywhere. I wish you the best Colbie.

I enjoy her music. I think I will have a funny picture in my head the next time I hear one of her songs though! :)
