My Favorite Bluegrass and Folk Songs of 2008

![]()
I'm always eager to dig into a new bluegrass album, especially from perennial favorites like Rhonda Vincent, Blue Highway and Dan Tyminski. And if you haven't heard new bands like the SteelDrivers and the Infamous Stringdusters, I heartily recommend them. Here are some of my favorite bluegrass songs from 2008, with some folk tunes thrown into the playlist for good measure.
Rhonda Vincent, "Who's Cryin' Baby"
Blue Highway, "A Week From Today"
Dan Tyminski, "Making Hay"
The SteelDrivers, "Heaven Sent"
Meg Hutchinson, "Climbing Mountains"
Gibson Brothers, "Long Way Down"
Carrie Newcomer, "Leaves Don't Fall (They Just let Go)"
Longview, "The Ballad of Jesse Taylor"
Infamous Stringdusters, "Golden Ticket"
The Avett Brothers, "Tear Down the House"
Tony Rice, "Never Meant to Be"
Melonie Cannon, "Cactus in a Coffee Can"
Jerry Douglas with Rodney Crowell, "Long Hard Road (A Sharecropper's Dream)"
Robin and Linda Williams, "Maybelle's Guitar and Monroe's Mandolin"

A good list. Many made the Americana Top 100 albums of 2008. On a side note…If you delve into The Steeldrivers front man (of sorts) solo work Mike Henderson…you’ll find some of the best Roots Rock, and Roots Country albums around. Mike is definately in contention for Artists of The Decade. Just go listen to his music. I dare you.

How about the Steep Canyon Rangers: “Lovin’ Pretty Women”
and “Be Still Moses”? Two great songs by a terrific group!!

I agree with BW… Dailey & Vincent made a HUGE splash in bluegrass music this year…They won SEVEN IBMA awards… What an amazing group…all the way from their vocals to the guys themselves!
