Johnny Knoxville on his Directing Stint With Roger Alan Wade’s Video

Posted: December 16th, 2008 at 3:03 pm  |  By: Johnny Knoxville

My cousin Roger Alan Wade wrote a very personal song about his hero, Waylon Jennings, and he recorded it where he has recorded most every song he has ever written — in my living room. Most all the Jackass guys were there to watch him do it, too. If they know Rog’ is recording and they are in town, the boys will be there. They worship Roger the same way I do.

Anyway, reminding Roger that his mom and my mom are sisters, I asked him if I could direct the video for the song. Luckily, he said yes, and I told him Dimitry (Elyaskevich — Jackass producer, director of photography and, most of all, friend) and I would be traveling to Chattanooga within a week to shoot it. What we were going to shoot, though, I had no idea. I believe the initial idea was … Hell, I can’t even remember the initial idea. I do recall that the video took shape in my head when Roger’s daughter Shandy (thanks, Shandy) told me she had all this Super 8 footage of her father from the ‘70s. I then formed a partial idea for what we were going to do, borrowed a Super 8 camera from my friend Lance Bangs (thanks, Lance), and Dimitry and I flew off to Chattanooga to shoot. I think the video cost me about $63 dollars to shoot. Dimitry did it for free, and we got the tape stock for free. I think the only costs I incurred were Wendy’s hamburgers, a portable CD player used for playback of the song, and beer. Let me tell you, this video could have cost ALOOOOTTTT more, but Shooter Jennings gave us the previously unseen footage of his father in this video for free. For FREE!!! It was such a sweet sweet thing to do, and Roger and I will never forget it.

When you do videos quick and on the cheap, I highly recommend you have a great song to go along with it, and in this case, we did. I also recommend you have very creative, easygoing people to work with, as well. I want to thank Dimitry for busting his butt once again out of his love for Roger and me. And Jeff and Spike for their creative input, as always. I want to thank my girlfriend Naomi for her complete love and support. A big, big thank you to Seth Casriel for his friendship and for doing a beautiful job editing this video for practically nothing. Thank you to my pal Cody Hixon of Knoxville, Tenn., for procuring the Waylon replica guitar used in the video, and also thanks for the beautiful leatherwork you did on it. Roger and I also owe a huge thanks to Shooter Jennings for giving us the footage. We are still blown away by your kindness. Thanks to Jay Frank and everyone at CMT for playing this and, most of all, thank you, Rog’. You wrote a beautiful song, and I love you very much.

Sincerely,

Johnny Knoxville

P.S. — Be sure and catch mine and Rog’s radio show, The Big Ass Happy Family Jubilee on Sirius/XM every Saturday night at 8 ET. Wahooo!!!!

The song is hard for me to hear-(”johnny Cash has Died” hurts me) the real-life,no B.S. family home movies tore me apart- Roger Alan Wade is the real thing… There are very few artists who have the courage to put it all out there in the manner he does, and the ones who did were the ones who the “establishment” ostracized for speaking the truth.

Roger is a huge talent in my opinion that when you have discovered him you also discover that he is a great man!

I’m so glad to see Roger in his Video Debut and Johnny you and those who helped have done such a wonderful job with making this come true. Cost is not the issue when you have great material to work with….it speaks it’s value loudly.

I was wondering about the Waylon Footage and it must have been such an honor and a testament to Roger to have Shooter Jennings donate something of his Father to this project!

To those of you at CMT…I am one of many who would love to see this video on TV in rotation ASAP!!

    This is Great!!

I discovered R.A.W. a few years ago and not only got great laughs singing along with some of his funnier work, I also discovered a talent not seen anymore if not forgotten all together. He carrys on a rough gritty truly classic style of country music, The kind of music music that made me love it stuff like waylon, merle, johnny, jerry reed, kris, willie,on and on. To not put something of this nastalgic style on the air would be almost criminal to true country not just modern “pop country” fans.

  • Glenn says:

When I first saw Rog in Knoxville, Tn. pickin’ at a small college bar, I thought this is real country! Where did this come from? It was really cool, the place was poppin, folks were singin’ along like they they wrote the songs themselves, and I was too! The next time I saw him sing was in my hometown, Rinngold,Ga…This time thousands of people were singing along with Roger!!. His songs resonate in the hearts of good people.

The word “Amazing” comes to mind when I here the name ROGER ALAN WADE! This is not no cookie cutter cowboy bs this is the real deal! I mean this guy has hit after hit “songs” in his pocket that few people has had the privilege to hear and even fewer that has the privilege to record! I really hate to drop name’s but here’s just a couple that has recorded his music, Willie, Waylon, Cash, George Jones and Hank.jr. Wow that blows me away just typing it! I hope that CMT realize’s a true talent has landed in thier laps and that they need to take advantage of it! maybe one of the last “honky tonk hero’s”! Peace out! tubbs. Columbus,OH

If anyone should be on CMT it is Roger. Anyone who has heard his music knows what kind of talent he has as a singer/songwriter. Truly a master in the craft of songwriting and a true country voice, his name must be included in the same breath as waylon, willie and the boys……forget all this other junk they play and force down everyone’s throat nowadays, there’s a few good ones left but……Roger Alan Wade is the real deal.

    CMT get with the program

Being a huge Waylon fan this gives this fills a void that many of todays new country musicians never knew existed. Thanks RAW and thank you Johnny and everyone else involved for making such a great video! CMT you have GOT to play this if you want TRUE country music!

The First Time I Saw Waylon illustrates the point at which a young man connects, in a deeply meaningful way, with an icon who sings the Truth of his life. Roger, in recalling this moment in his own life, reminds us all of our own painful and joyous pathways and epiphanies. Roger’s work is what country music is intended to be…simple truth about American life. His philosophy is that of American pragmatism, and deserves to be heard by the American public. RAW is the Mark Twain of contemporary country music.

  • Dave says:

I love this song and its really cool I love the video too. I even love how they put the real family pictures and waylon jennings. its a great song and it reminds me how much waylon was so good. If waylon was still around today and heard this song. he would thought it was cool. he would of helped roger if he could.
Thats what I think waylon would do. I hope you play rogers video on the rotation. I really don’t care for todays new music. Roger really is someone I think in someway bring the classic country back. I believe strongly that his music is something I could be happy about because it takes me back to that old country music in the 70’s,60’s and the 50’s.
thats what I think we need today. is Classic country and the roots showing.
so please people and anyone who reads this please help Roger and knoxville play it on cmt.
    we need this music.
