Would Trace Adkins Really Marry for Money?

Posted: December 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Trace AdkinsMusic snobs everywhere will hate me for this. But I have to admit, I am a sucker for novelty songs. They may not have the poetry of a country ballad or the heartfelt story of a love-gone-wrong tale, but they have something. And today, I have a new favorite: Trace Adkins' "Marry for Money," from his new album, X (Ten). The image of all 6'6" of Adkins as a pathetic little gold digger is funny enough. But then you throw his baritone vocals onto the hook about "I don't really care if she loves me/She can even be ugly/I'm gonna marry for money," and you've got yourself a novelty song that's as memorable as it is laughable.

Adkins didn't write the song (Dave Turnbull and Jimmy Melton did), so I'm pretty sure he doesn't truly want to marry for money. He already has a lovely wife, anyway. But there may have been some truth to the song back when he was working on an oil rig before his country music days. He may've fantasized about finding himself a sugar mamma with a whole lot of zeros and commas. That, to me, is what makes these kinds of songs so damn fun. There is a bit of truth in them all: Brad Paisley's "Online" is funny because there are so many guys who are able to create false identities thanks to the anonymity of the Internet. Faith Hill's "Dearly Beloved" rings true because there are a lot (half of them, to be exact) of married couples who stay together forever -- until they find somebody new. And Joe Nichols' "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" makes me laugh because everyone has a friend who starts the night with a little Patron and ends it with a lot of shame.

When done well, novelty songs can be very good.

I love all these songs. Sometimes, you have to have an easy, simple song to lighten the mood. Trace’s “Marry for Money” is one of my favorite ‘fun’ songs off the album, although, there’s not one song on there that I skip over.
Novelty songs have their place right along with serious ballads.
