Some Pre-Grammy Grammy Predictions

Posted: December 3rd, 2008 at 1:11 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

SugarlandThe Grammys are on tonight (Dec.3) — oh, wait. Scratch that. The Grammy nominations are on tonight. You have to wait until February to see who wins, but tonight you can find out who’s in the running (and watch Taylor Swift co-host and perform). The Recording Academy says that by announcing nominations at night, they can really bring the ultimate amount of attention to the beginning of Grammy season. Or, they can just drag it out to try to pull in more prime-time advertising revenue. Either way, before I can predict some country winners, I must first guess the country nominees.

As usual, there’s that fine line between who I think will be nominated and who should be nominated. So for the sake of staying politically correct, here’s who I think will get some Grammy love tonight.

My best female country vocal performance predictions: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood.

My best male country vocal performance predictions: George Strait, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney. Strait and Chesney have never won a Grammy.

My best country performance (Duo or Group) predictions: The Eagles, Sugarland, Brooks & Dunn, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum.

And I’d like to think that Trace Adkins‘ “You’re Gonna Miss This” and Jamey Johnson’s “In Color” will both be in the running for best country song. Check out the L.A. Times‘ predictions for best country album nominations.

As always, Americana artists will dominate the Grammy nominations.

It’s gonna be Robert Plant and Alison Krauss up one side and down the other. Not that I’m complaining.

If I were a betting man, I’d bet that Swift is shut out from the nominations. The committee is smart in using her to drum up publicity, but Female’s her only real shot.

It’s too bad that we have so many awards shows now, and the Grammys have to pull these types of tricks to stay “relevant”.

What about Reba? She had her duet with Kenny Chesney out. I think she needs some kind of Grammy nod.

As much as I love Keith Urban, I don’t think he will be nominated this year. Probably Brad or George. What are the requirements for a Grammy anyhow?

Ya, you picked the artists, but the awards are for performances, so you would have to assign a song to the artists. Some performances’ I’d like to see mentioned are Jamey Johnson - In Color
Trisha Yearwood - This Is Me You’re Talking To
Lee Ann Womack - Last Call
Trace Adkins - You’re Gonna Miss This
LeAnn Rimes - What I Cannot Change

Carrie Underwood should get a nod for Country Album, Female Vocalist, hopefully. Carrie is also up for Pop Collab for her charity single she did for Cancer, called Just Stand Up, with Beyonce, and 13 other ladies.

Sugarland is a lock for Country Song with Stay, and will also win Country Duo/Group.

I think Trisha should be nominated for Female vocalist over Taylor, but Taylor has the backing of her label– so Trisha will get unfairly shut out.

This is not based on sales or chart success. It is based on pure vocal talent and artistry. Taylor should not even be nominated for anything with her vocals– but I bet she will sneak in there somehow and shut Trisha out.

You’re right Chris N. Plant and Krauss all over the place. Which goes back to my first post. Americana artists always dominate, and the AMA Honors and Awards are always an indication as to who will win Grammys.

I dont know when the cutoff date is for music to be nominated for a grammy, but either this year or next year, I hope Brad Paisley gets some nominations for his “Play” album. He definitely deserves it.

I would just love to see Tim McGraw walk off with a grammy this time. He has been really overlooked.

The grammy’s get it right. I was very pleased with the country nominations this year, everyone was deserving. They didnt let commericial overtake talent unlike the CMA’s. It was pleasing to see great artists like Jamey Johson, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, and Lee Ann Womack nominated.

Last year and the year before Dierks Bentley walked away with 6 nominations in total, 4 from last year alone. As many as anyone. This is a voice that will surely be missed this year, both on the CMAs and the Grammy’s. But talent will supercede award shows and hopefully next year, they will recognize that.
