First Comes Love. Then Comes Taylor Swift Song
Or is it the other way around? One thing's for sure. When Taylor Swift writes about love and loss, there's always some truth behind it. Like on "Hey Stephen," one of the tracks from her new album. It turns out there really is a Stephen, and like the song says, "All those other girls, well they're beautiful. But would they write a song for you?" The Stephen in the song was inspired by Stephen Barker Liles, 24, of the Nashville pop band Love and Theft. Liles and Swift met in 2007, and then the band opened a few shows for Swift this year. "Sometimes all it takes to write a song about someone is thinking that they're cute," Swift told People. So far, everyone's denying that the two are dating. But that means nothing. Because maybe, when you're a songwriter, writing a song about someone cute is just a precursor to a first date.

C’mon, do we REALLY need yet another blog on Taylor? You’d think she was the ONLY country artist alive. Give us a break. She is WAY -over-rated and if I liked her at all in the beginning, I’m getting to like her less and less the MORE you print on her. Give Taylor (and us) a rest please.
RedMaZ says:
…and yet she’s one of the biggest acts in Pop Country. That speaks volumes about the average “country” listener now doesn’t it? Maybe it’s time for more people to wise up and realize there is much more to todays music than Mainstream Pop Culture. Unless of course you are a slave to it. Which seems to be the case. If Swift can get over on the masses, I say more power to her. After all, at the end of the day who is responsible for all of this?
luvncountry says:
I’m not buying her music, going to her concerts, or going ga-ga over her. For that matter, I don’t like EVERY pop country song on the charts, or buy many CD’s for that matter.
If by masses you mean mostly teenyboppers and mamas, then I’m not your “average” country pop listener. That’s not to say I don’t like/enjoy Pop (in any genre) but not inundated.
Since it’s Christmas, guess I gotta dig out my Dean Martin holiday CD (yeah, he’s pop too I know) but he’s COOL & suave
(and gone, darn it).
Brad says:
I just dont see the appeal to her. She seems like a nice girl but she is getting very annoying and oversaturated. I hate that she is straying away from country and into pop almost completely because those artists last 2-3 years max while ocuntry can stay around 5-30 years
TITANSFAN says:
I CAN SEE WHY SHE LIKES STEPHEN(LOVE AND THEFT)HE’S VERY CUTE. LOVE AND THEFT ROCKS!!!!
bkb says:
lulncountry, the dean martin holiday cd has a cool duet with martina, glad you like the cd.

Melissa says:
Good blog, Alison! The song is adorable - I really like it! I don’t think they’ll date anytime soon, since Taylor really does seem to need “single” time right now. But maybe it will happen - you never know.
Diane says:
Good? Sure. OK. This blog is actually quite ridiculous.
Anyways, I doubt she’s dating Stephen. Given how open Taylor is about her personal life, if she was dating him or anyone else for that matter, we’d all know. Also, when did it become impossible/impractical for a guy and a girl to be good friends and just that?
twilightrocks says:
all i have to say to the same people who keep posting comments on here saying that she overrated and doesn’t deserve to be on the country radio is if you dont like her songs change the channel and if your tried of read blogs about her then dont click on it read it then post a comment.
bkb says:
we all need to quit swift’s blogs and then she would really go away where ever she came from.
Kelli (Tay Fan For Life) says:
Wow! Taylor Swift is a country artist and she says she will always stay country! So what if her songs go pop, they were country in the first place! Taylor Swift is amazing and is like a superstar in country music! Taylor Swift, keep doing what your doing!! Taylor’s album Fearless went Platinum, if she is not so good, then how did Fearless go platinum in only 3 weeks? She rocks!!!!! :)
luvncountry says:
Well, I’ll beat RedMaz to it. Taylor sings POP country, as do the majority of artists under the “country” umbrella of Pop music.
Actually says:
Actually it’s not platinum, and that has nothing to do with her talent.
What’s the big deal? It’s not like she’s the first songwriter to write a song about someone she likes.
luvncountry says:
I would probably buy my cousin’s CD even if it was awful just to support her, has NOthing to do with talent. I write in journals & poetry too, doesn’t mean it’s good enough to publish- unless I hit up my family & friends. She’s just got great PR and people that listen with a tin ear. Good for her.
If she pays me, I’ll take her CD, still good for a frisbee.
rolltidefan says:
Do we need another blog about ts???? PLEASE STOP!!!
Tia(doesnt understand taylor swift ‘haters’ says:
i love how people say how much they dont like her yet they take the time to click on a blog about her, read through it, then leave comments. i mean really? thats what you spend your time doing? i dont likke miley cyrus therefore i dont read things about her or take the time to click on blogs and comment abour her. but obviously all of you taylor ‘haters’ didnt get that memo. Taylor is only going to get bigger. America loves teenager superstars, and thats exactly what she is. over 1 million copies of her album sold in barely 3 weeks, so its safe to say that you will be seeing ALOT more of taylor. Get over it.
rolltidefan says:
DREAM ON, TIA!!!!!

Stephen has been a good friend of mine for several years, and I really dont see him dating Taylor…but its kinda cool seeing his name on here and seeing his pic on the people weekly website. He’s the sweetest guy on earth and hilarious, so I can see her fascination with him. Way to go SBL I wish you and Brian and Eric all the luck in the world and hope the Love and Theft album takes you guys to the top. LOVE AND HUGS
Diane says:
Yea she was off on that first song. Definitely should’ve chosen a different song. Good thing she ended with one of her own songs. Made the performance more bearable.
Janet Lin says:
I saw Taylor Swift sing “I’m Sorry” on the Grammy Nominee show last night. She is a very average singer. She has been picked up by managers who know how to promote a beautiful girl with an average voice and the public has bought into it. DUPED AGAIN! Taylor is grossly overrated. If she was fat, no one would give her a second thought.
Fred Stein says:
Taylor Swift is all in the way she looks and carries herself. The girl can’t sing.
CJ says:
It is a fact she can not sing but kids could care less. They like the pretty dresses, make up and all the props she uses. I saw her in person and was very disapointed with her voice.Just my opinion.
Jim C. says:
Here’s the thing about Taylor Swift…..she has the weakest voice in Country Music. In my humble opinion she embarasses herself when she sings live at the various awards show. As a matter of fact…I am embarassed for her…to the point that I can’t even watch or listen. Further, it is becoming very clear, through her music, just how immature she really is….and how petty she is as well. She’ll be forgotten in a couple of years….HOPEFULLY!
C-natural says:
i love this post…
taylor always includes secret messages for each song on her albums, and the message in this song was “love and theft.” now I know what that meant!
K says:
Taylor does have a weak voice, but look at all the people in rap and pop music who make pointless songs with degrading lyrics. And the thousands of pop singers who wear skimpy “hot” clothes, even if the singer can’t carry a tune. Taylor’s fans are hardly the only ones who buy into the “great looks, but weak vocals scheme.” Give the girl a break, you bashers act like she’s the only average (or bad, depending on how you look at) singer in the world.
She’s not, get over it people.
Fact is, people like Taylor, look at her album sales, all her Myspace views, download sales, ect. She’s obviously doing something right…Also, if I’m not mistaken, she got her start on Myspace and got discovered because so many people enjoyed her music.
And, she does have talent as a writer. I am close to her age, and I wish I could write like she does. Plus, she seems to care about her fans and making personal connections with them. And at at least she CARES about being a good role model for little girls who listen to her.
I don’t think bashers realize that Taylor’s fans are going to love her and her music no matter what. Yeah, they’ll defend bad performances, see her in concert, and buy her album as many times as she puts it out. Bashers never matter to true fans of an artist, and I think this holds true for Taylor. I even think the excessive bashing of TS just makes her fans love her more. They convince themselves they’ll always be a fan because they think if at a least a few people aren’t there to defend her, she’ll get drowned in negativity.
And I’m not even a Taylor fan…that’s how bad Taylor bashing has gotten in my opinion. I am a non-fan and I come on blogs quite regularly to defend her…there is something wrong here.
aintlikenit says:
a lot of you are like bashing Taylor she’s an amazing singer and songwriter she might not have THE best voice in the world but quit bashing her atleast shes got talent and did something about it and shes worked hard to get where shes at today so back off. She’s genuinely a good person so you people should get something better to do than bash on somebody working their but off.

taylor is the best thing to ever hit country music! and love and theft is about to be the next best thing to hit country music!! so get ready! and tay and stephen would be a beautiful couple if it happens! eveyone go buy fearless now and love and thefts album will be hittin the stores before we know it…so show all your love and go buy it too!!!!
Cory says:
Have to totally agree with cassidy above. Taylor is the whole package and at the end of the day its her smarts and her song writing talent that will make her into a huge star - if she isn’t already. Taylor has said many a time before in her interviews that her songs are stories and if you happen to be young at heart and can related to them then that’s all that matters. I totally second - Taylor and Stephen getting together so…. Hey Stephen call Taylor up already and ask her out on a date ;-)
