Award-Winning Writer Retraces Hank Williams' Last Ride

Hank WilliamsLike many fans before him, Peter Egan heard the calling to follow the tire tracks of Hank Williams' last drive from Montgomery, Ala., north along the rural routes to Oak Hill, W.Va. However, Egan's road trip turned into a story that is worth telling in its own right. This article from Road & Track is a nostalgic, page-turning read that explores all the stops that Hank and his driver made on that journey and relates unexpected meetings with people that lived the story firsthand. The details and connections that Egan stumbles upon did much to fill in the missing pieces of Hank's last few days for me. Car buffs will surely love its detail too, as it recently won the Motor Press Guild's best article of the year award. It seems that Hank is still inspiring greatness and not just musically.

First and foremost, I am a new member to this site and have not yet figured out how to post my own blogs or messages. Could anyone tell me how? I’d really appreciate it!

I’m glad to see someone finally wrote about Hank Williams. I am so tired of hearing about these new “country” singers. They aren’t country at all!!! It’s horrible. I bet some of them don’t even know a thing about the originators of country music, such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Tanya Tucker, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, and the classics. All of the new music seems to sound the same to me. The only artists on “country” radio that I am impressed by today are George Strait and Alan Jackson. They stay true to country’s roots. I don’t see why the originals don’t get any radio time anymore. Country music is truly dying. Although many of the new artists have talent, they are NOT “country”. I think “country” music ended in the early 90’s with Shania Twain and Garth Brooks. Whatever happened to the newer artists who actually WERE country, such as Deryl Dodd, Sammy Kershaw, Tracey Lawrence, Randy Travis, etc.? Especially Deryl Dodd. His remake of Tom T. Hall’s “That’s how I got to Memphis” is truly amazing. I want “country” music back!
