Seven Years After "Who I Am," Jessica Andrews Returns

Posted: November 26th, 2008 at 12:51 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Jessica Andrews Artist PageNot every teenager who takes Nashville by storm ends up riding the Taylor Swift rocketship to stardom. Some take time off to write, reflect and find a new record label. Like Jessica Andrews of "Who I Am" fame, circa 2001. She was just 17 when she sang about being "Rosemary's granddaughter, the spitting image of my father and when the day is done my momma's still my biggest fan." She was also the ACM's top new female vocalist in 2000, had a gold record and toured with Tim McGraw. Now, some seven years later, she's back with a new label and a new single, "Everything." And I like it. She may have evolved and changed and matured, but my appreciation for a powerful voice has not. Go listen and let me know what you think.

I loved the song “Who I Am” when it came out and now I love the song “Everything” Thank you for letting us know that Jessica is back on the scene again–I too like a powerful voice (like Carrie’s) and Jessica is another powerouse in my opinion!!!

I love how it’s said that Jessica “took time off”…. it’s called not having a radio hit and being dropped from your record label.

I always liked (THIS) Jessica and am glad she’s back. I wish her much luck this time around too, she is a very talented
young woman with a great clear voice.

Not familiar with her, but I will check her out and comment after. Thanks for the suggestion. I believe everyone should check out new artists or someone they haven’t heard of.

She’s not really “new” because Jessica has had a successful single or two awhile back. Didn’t some of her “time off” include going back to school, or something else? She may have been dropped by her label but that happens to a lot of artists, I don’t think it had ANYthing to do with her talent because she DOES have a good voice. I’m sure it has matured along with her and sounds even better now. Not nice Chris.

    Posted: November 26th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

I didn’t say she wasn’t talented. I like a few of her tunes.

  • countryiscool says:

    Posted: November 26th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Chris, you didn’t say that though. You only mentioned being dumped by her label and not having a hit. I’m glad you agree she has talent and like her songs.

    A Blessed THANKSGIVING to all!

Okay, checked her out. Vocally much better than most other Pop singers, but the music and production is typical fluff like most Pop singers. If this is supposed to be some kind of comeback. I doubt it. I have the feeling she won’t have enough financial backing to “make it” (as it were). One more thing, she should invest in a hair brush.

I think Chris and RedMaZ are right.

Chris is right - “taking time off” is a polite way of saying, “got dumped by the record label and it took 3 years to find another label willing to give me a shot.”

RedMaZ is right too - Andrews is probably better than the typical pop singer, but it seems unlikely that she will be anywhere near the top of the pop country charts soon.

    Posted: November 27th, 2008 at 11:14 am

Actually, Jessica wasn’t dropped by her record label. Her former label Dreamworks closed its doors back in 2005 and left talents like Toby Keith, Jimmy Wayne, Darryl Worley and Jessica Andrews without a home. Love this song and love Jessica’s voice - glad she’s back.

  • hotelmotel says:

    Posted: November 27th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

If Andrews wasn’t dropped because the label first went out of business, she would have been dropped had it stayed in business. She wasn’t selling well at all by 2005. And the long time it took her to find another label is also quite telling of her commercial power at this point.

So if “taking time off” isn’t a polite way to say “dropped by the label” in this case, it is a polite way of saying, “my label went out of business and nobody else would hire me onto their label.”

JESSICA ANDREWS IS NOTHING LIKE CU THANK GOD, SHE IS SO SWEET AND WRITES MOST OF HER SONGS SHE IS MORE LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT AS FAR AS THAT GOES WITH THE SONGS!THE WAY JESSICA ACTS WHEN SHE FIRST CAME AROUND JUST LIKE TAYLOR NOT CU. CU IS VERY FULL OF HERSELF NOT LIKE WHEN SHE FIRST WON AI WELCOME BACK JESSICA!!!

Goldie- Leave Carrie alone! Jessica is very talented and sweet, and so is Carrie. Carrie doesn’t write all of her material, and neither does Jessica, why the comparison? Carrie also plays several insturments and she is a fabulous singer. You have no proof Carrie is full of herself. Granted, I have heard that Carrie isn’t the nicest to her fans all the time, but maybe there is a reason, and I chose to regard comments about CU’s character as rumors, because I’ve never met her.

Carrie herself has said she is a very shy person, and there are many misconceptions about her and her character. I can’t imagine how I would even begin to handle a situation like Carrie’s. Going from a small town where you are perfectly content to all of a sudden being the center of every media storm?? Going from being able to go anywhere you wanted with no attention to all of a sudden having fans mob you for autographs??

Also, if you have paid attention to anyone in the industry, you’d realize that there Carrie has many industry fans all the way from Patty Loveless and Darius Rucker to Vince Gill, Randy Travis and Rascal Flatts. Granted, I’m not saying fans equals popularity, but all these people speak very highly of Carrie and say she is a very nice, sweet girl.

I suggest you do your research before you judge.

I could have sworn I was reading a blog on the return of Jessica Andrews- not a bash Carrie blog, I think that’s somewhere else, go find it please and stick to the topic at hand.

Jessica Andrews is amazing. Her voice is definitely standout. I’ve actually searched itunes and bought many of her songs even though ‘Who I am’ was the only one to really hit radio. She deserves a major comeback.

Countryiscool- The only reason I brought Carrie up was because someone else did- not me. I am a fan and feel she deserves defending. Granted, this always happens on CMT blogs- people bring Carrie up to bash her when half the time she isn’t even relevant to the conversation. So, before you accuse me of doing the bashing I sugguest YOU read a few posts above and stop accusing me of acts I didn’t do.

As for Jessica…Yes, she is very talented, and deserves to have the long career attention of other great females of this genere. Best of luck to her!

K, I was not directing my comments toward you- more Goldie for bringing Carie into a blog that had nothing to do with her, but Jessica. I have no problems with YOUR comment. I know you were defending Carrie.

I want her to make it. Really I do. I hate that she has to feed the beast in order to make it. I wish i could really hear her great voice sing something that is way off the charts. The thing about Everything…is it’s everything that’s just ON the charts. Go JessiGirl…

Jessica is one of the best singers in county Music I am so glad she is back!!!

We need to support Jessica and other great real singers like Faith, Leanne, Martina, Reba, Dolly!!

I am tired of all the fake no talent singers like Pickler, Swift, Lady Antebellum, Julianne Hough(Aaaahhhhh)!!!

Thank God someone that can actually sing is putting material out! I wish her well. She has a great voice. When is this nonsense with people who can’t sing like Julianne Hough, Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift going to stop?

I love her voice and am so glad she is back.

She has the kind of voice that never needs a video to back it up. Good luck JA!

It seems there are mixed feelings.

For the record, no one told me about this page, I found it doing a google search of Jessica today. I had been wondering what happened to her. I really loved BOTH of her CD’s…she had more music on the air than people seem to remember. Just because “Who I Am” was the biggest…doesn’t mean she didn’t do well. My personal favorite of hers was always “Unbreakable Heart” and maybe you remember that she had a single that came out with the release of the “Prince of Egypt” movie.

She is a very talented songwriter…and just because she hasn’t release anything of her own, does NOT mean her music is not out there.

Welcome back Jessica…I am so excited for your new music!!
