Soup's On for Jewel
Maybe she always knew farming. But now that Jewel's a bona fide country singer, she's extolling the virtues of America's agriculture in a campaign to support the future of farming. And she's doing it for Campbell's soup. "I love living on a ranch because I like being connected to ground," Jewel says on the campaign's Web site. "I like knowing where our food comes from." You may not think about freshly-farmed veggies when you sit down to a bowl of Chicken & Stars. But Campbell's relies on farmers every day to make so many of their soups M'm! M'm! Good! And Jewel is doing her part by getting out there, harvesting money and preserving family farms for the Help Grow Your Soup initiative. If you just click on the little red barn, you will effortlessly donate $1 to the cause.

I’m sorry, I’m not convinced Jewel’s all “country” just all of a sudden. its a great thing to support, I know. especially where I live, a lot of us want to stay rural. but come on. she seems to be laying it on a bit think. Its common knowledge she’s lived on a ranch for 10 years (and for most of that time unmarried) with Ty Murray. He’s a rodeo king. it kinda goes with the territory, duh. never during her pop career did she do things like this, or talk about growing veggies. not until she became a “country” star is she all down to earth. It seems like she’s taking all these things and using them to try to prove how really country she is. and I’m just not buying that much. a genre change doesn’t make you country. neither does marrying a rodeo king and adding a mandolin.
hotelmotel says:
I’m not buying it either, Kim. Jewel’s “I’m so country” persona is extremely contrived.
That said, its a good cause and its great that Jewel is espousing it (though one wonders if she is being paid to espouse it, and thus she may not really be sincere).
That said, too, I do think Jewel’s single “Stronger Woman” was better than a lot of the stuff put out by other singers on the country charts at the time. I don’t begrudge her success at country radio, but I do wish she didn’t engage in transparently disingenuous marketing campaigns.

Maybe you should read her biography first, on how she grew up in the remote town of Homer, Alaska singing to Eskimos. Her Roots are Country/Folk. I think it’s a shame she decided to try Pop Country. It seem like a set back from where she was. Her earlier work was much better than what she’s doing now. I hope it was worth it.
Kim says:
yeah, her pop music was great. her roots never showed at all until now Red. that’s my point. she sang to eskimos all right, but how does that automatically make her roots in country folk matter? She became a pop star. period. if you read some other pop star’s bio’s a lot of them came from small towns with bar-room folk backgrounds. she set out to be a hollywood pop star, it went bust, she goes country-pop. and now all of a sudden her roots are real important to her. I seriously call into question the values of those folksy roots because they never mattered to her career before.
now that she’s “country” she’s going around to every kinda country endorsement out there and it looks contrived (good word h/m). a little like jessica simpson actually. and Red, I know what you think about her authenticity. The first time Jewel’s caught at a real farmers market buying local veggies from local farmers, not in walmart buying cambell’s off the shelf, i’ll believe her a little more. until then, I’m a skeptic. she belongs in the Forth Worth tea-sippers association.

i totally agree she is a great singer and she let every
one know:)so know shes country but shes letting her pop roots show:( if people(singers)go from one type of music
to the other they would get mixed up with the other my i
make one little suggestion that is not a very good idea if
you ask me but im not telling you i am simply making a
wonderful suggestion. and that would really make me feel good if you at least think about it. and by the way i am
glad she likes farming because i live on a farm so beat that8)
