Toby Keith Brings a Funny Gift to A Colbert Christmas
I seldom recommend comedy clips on the Web, but you've gotta check out this one that includes part of Toby Keith's appearance on Stephen Colbert's Christmas special debuting this weekend on Comedy Central. The concept of the special centers around the The Colbert Report's host being snowed in at a remote cabin, unable to travel to the city to tape his big holiday extravaganza. Instead, a succession of guests, including Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, John Legend, Feist and The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, make their way to his cabin. And while I haven't seen the entire special, I'd venture to guess that Keith is the only one who is carrying a gun when he walks through the door. After a brief conversation about how times have changed -- and not necessarily for the better -- Keith breaks into a new holiday song that's set to a familiar melody.
Keith says Colbert has always helped him when he's promoting a new album or film project.
"I consider him kind of a spoof of Bill O'Reilly," Keith told me recently. "When people tune in, they want to see him take some senator down. They consider me to be a right-winger, anyway, because I support the troops. ... But they tune in, and it pisses them off that he just supports me and doesn't take me to task like he does everybody else. He doesn't hammer me. ... They tune in hoping he'll take me down. But he always promotes whatever I'm hawking. He's a good dude."
A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All premieres Sunday (Nov. 23) at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.

This sounds like it will be a fun show.
RedMaZ says:
Big fan of Elvis Costello. He’s a musical genius. He has been heavily influenced by Country Music. Did you know Elvis released a Country cover album in 1981? It’s called “Almost Blue”.
Elizabeth says:
I’m looking forward to Toby’s performance.

This Atheist Loved It says:
Somebody do me a favor and go look up Poe’s Law.
Then tell me if you still think this is so great.
(He’s singing a satirical song on a satirical news show, for jeebus’s sake.)
Shotgun says:
Then again…if you’re an Atheist, you have to agree that Toby’s Christmas statement is just one more sack of randomly motivated atoms emitting sound waves…and why bother correcting other sacks of atoms when they emit soundwaves that may not accurately describe the first sack of atoms’ actions?
The Bro says:
@Shotgun
That makes no sense. And believe it or not Toby Keith’s song was satire.
I give you “Poe’s Law” (as “This Atheist Loved It” mentioned)
“Poe’s Law relates to fundamentalism, and the difficulty of identifying actual parodies of it. It suggests that, in general, it is hard to tell fake fundamentalism from the real thing, since they both sound equally ridiculous. The law also works in reverse: real fundamentalism can also be indistinguishable from parody fundamentalism.”
pat says:
I saw the special and dont feel that it is necessary for us to say Merry Xmas. We are a diversified country with many nationalities - so why not say Happy Holiday. It doesn’t detract from what we are celebrating.
Chris says:
Christian nation. Christian holiday…MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Shotgun says:
Mr. “The Bro” I agree that it makes no sense for an Atheist to make moral statements.
As for “Poe’s Law” … as a Christian apologist and philosopher, I could aruge that Poe has no basis from which to make statements about empirical experiences in the first place…let alone judge them to be ridiculous.
I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but I could suggest that you enjoy the humor for what it is, and not try to read your bias into it.
