My "Recently Added" Songs Fuel a Friend's Playlist

Posted: November 20th, 2008 at 6:18 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

A friend of mine e-mailed me yesterday looking for some new music recommendations. Now, I should tell you that this is not some casual country fan. He used to work in country radio, so I had to think long and hard about what he might like. He's pretty much heard it all. I wanted to make sure my playlist had the kind of music that was fresh and new but still country enough to feel genuine. And this is the what I came up with, by browsing my iPhone's "Recently Added" playlist. Some may not be technically new, but they may be new to him. If you'd like to add to the list, feel free. The more country, the better. With enough good twangy vocals and steel guitars, maybe he'll realize what he's missing and come on back to country for good.

Zac Brown Band: "Chicken Fried"
Jamey Johnson: "In Color"
Darius Rucker: "I Hope They Get to Me in Time"
Taylor Swift: "Fifteen"
Taylor Swift: "Fearless"
Eric Church: "Carolina"
Jason Aldean: "She's Country"
Trace Adkins: "Muddy Water"
Faith Hill: "A Baby Changes Everything"
Phil Vassar: "Around Here Somewhere"
Phil Vassar: "I Would"

Ashton Shepherd: "Pickin' Shed"
Carrie Underwood: "I Told You So"
Lee Ann Womack: "I Think I Know"
Kenny Chesney: "Spirit of a Storm"

Lady Antebellum: "Love's Lookin' Good on You"
Lady Antebellum: "Slow Down Sister"

How About adding some more Carrie, like “Just A Dream” (think about the message of the song and how it helps people….. something that country music is all about!) Other than that good list…. except for Taylor)

^ agreed … ‘Just A Dream’ by Carrie is definently missing from your list!

I’d say turn him onto some Texas/Red Dirt Music…

    Reckless Kelly
    Stoney LaRue
    Wade Bowen
    Modern Day Drifters
    Micky and The Motorcars

Or if you want to go Hard-Core Country…

    Dale Watson
    Roger Wallace
    Jesse Dayton
    Wayne Hancock
    The Derailers
    Heybale!
    Sara Hamilton
    Laura Cantrell
    Miss Leslie and Her Juke-Jointers

I could sugest some induvidual songs, but half the fun of this music is checking it out on your own.

Im liking Kenny’s song “Down The Road”

How about Toby Keith’s God Love Her? Great tune

On second thought, I will list a song for each…
Reckless Kelly - “Ragged as the Road” from their current CD “Bulletproof”

I would add Joey & Rory - “To Say Goodbye” & “Free Bird”

The more country the better, eh? That’s easy, just recommend he purchase Joey + Rory’s “The Life of a Song” in its entirety! Problem solved! Its also tough to beat Jypsi’s “Halfway Home Cafe” and Carter’s Chord’s “Goodbye Song”. For a “total country immersion” experience the songs “She Didn’t Color Daddy” and “Soakin’ Wet” from Amber Digby’s new album “Passion, Pride, And What Might Have Been” will knock his socks off. You also can’t miss with Sunny Sweeney, Miss Leslie Sloan, or Kimberly Murray either. Thank goodness real country music continues to thrive in the Lone Star State!

“What Hurts the Most” definitely should be on that list :)

Who sings What Hurts the Most? I may check it out?

    Back to my list…
Stoney LaRue - His Live version of “Down in Flames” from the CD “Live at Billy Bobs” Great CD btw.

How about Dolly Parton’s “Jesus & Gravity” or “Better Get To Livin”. Two of the most powerful songs released to country radio in years that they refused to play.

    Posted: November 21st, 2008 at 12:49 pm

I would add Gretchen Wilson or Randy Travis if you want true country. There are so many it is hard to pick. If you want a real powerful voice I would say Carrie Underwood any of her songs are great.

Great suggestions Red (except I have all of them already, lol)
    My additions:
    South Texas Destroyers
Pat Green’s latest single “Let Me”

I think “don’t say goodbye” on Reckless Kelly’s bulletproof is my fav from that album.

RedMaZ, that’s Rascal Flatts. If you’re in the mood to hear a pop-country ballad (and you weren’t kidding), it’s the best one I could offer.

To that list, I would add “Mowin’ Down the Roses” by Jamey Johnson and “Rattlin’ Bones” by Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson. Oh, and “My Roots are Showing” by Crystal Shawanda.

  • Kim says:

Right on Rick! there is no comparison to Texas music. Although I do not consider her part of “texas country” Miranda Lambert has some good “attitude” kinda artist. “more like her” is really good.

I’m also diggin’ Elizabeth Cook. She’s got more of an older sound, and to me, she does it justice.

  • Brenda says:

    Randy Houser - Anything Goes

  • One Last Time says:

    Posted: November 21st, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Kellie Pickler “Don’t You Know You’re Beatutiful” is mostly a girls’ anthem. Since this list is for a guy I’d go with One Last Time, a song guys and girls like.

  • Courtney says:

    Posted: November 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I agree with the above post. ‘One Last Time’ is probably my favorite song on Kellie’s album.

  • RedMaZ says:

Hi Kim! I figured you would. You’re the Texas girl!

cricket, it’s Rascal Flatts? Okay, I’ve checked out their music before and have heard enough of them to last a lifetime, but I like Kasey Chambers a lot since her 2000 CD release “The Captain”. “Rattlin’ Bones” will definately be in the Americana Top 10 albums of 2008.

    Next song suggestion…
God Bless This Town - Wade Bowen from his CD “Lost Hotel”

  • RedMaZ says:

“Small Town Way” by Modern Day Drifters. From their CD “The Highway is our Home”.

You can’t go wrong with the Carolina Chocolate Drops!

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: November 23rd, 2008 at 12:05 pm

I can appreciate what the CCD are doing, it’s not quite what I’m into. Maybe Alison’s friend will be though. That’s the great thing about music.

    My next suggestion…
“Naive” by Micky & The Motorcars from their most recent CD of the same name “Naive”. Micky and Gary Braun of Micky & The Motorcars, are brothers of Cody Braun of Reckless Kelly, so if you’re into Reckless Kelly, I’m sure you would like Micky & The Motorcars as well. A very talented family, and two great bands.

    Miranda Lambert- “More Like Her”

  • Kim says:

Once again Red, you knew something I don’t. had no idea those guys were brothers, and I listen to them both. gotta read more trivia….

Hi Kim, yes I enjoy sharing information as much as I can.

In my next segment I will be introducing everyone to some of todays Roots Music artists. Maybe Alison’s friend will like some of them. You never know until you listen.

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: November 25th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Dale Watson - “Justice For All”. Dale has a vast catalog of music to chose from, but this track is off his most recent CD “From The Cradle To the Grave”. It was written and recorded in Johnny Cash’s mountain cabin in Tennessee, now owned by Johnny Knoxville. My personal favorite CD of Dale’s is “I Hate These songs”. I will pick a song from that CD next for Alison’s friend to check out.

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: November 26th, 2008 at 10:38 am

A really good one from the “I Hate These Songs” CD by Dale Watson is “Wine Don’t Lie”.
