The Reasons Why Jessica Simpson Went Missing

Posted: November 14th, 2008 at 3:11 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Jessica SimpsonIt's hard to say if Jessica Simpson was the snubber. Or the snubbee. But one thing's for sure: She was not at the CMA Awards. Simpson had reportedly asked the powers that be if she could have a coveted performing spot on the show. But even though she had a Top 20 hit this year, that wasn't enough for her to push through the glass ceiling of the CMA. They must've given her a big ol' "no, thanks," because not only was Simpson not onstage, she wasn't there at all. I doubt that this has anything to do with Carrie Underwood's job as host, as some gossip sites have theorized. But all's well that ends well because Simpson booked another gig that night anyway. She played for an intimate crowd at the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Arizona.

    You mean she wasn’t there? eh…what’s one less blonde? There’s plenty to go around.

    Alison, I was waiting for someone to notice that Jessica was missing. I did notice. She had a really great hit this year. I thought for sure she would be on the show. I doubt it was because of that stupid Carrie Underwood thing. I guess its hard for her to get into the Nashville gates. I wonder “who” controls this industry sometimes, and for what I have seen & read fans can be sooo mean spirited. I try & keep an open mind & ear to ALL people trying to break into any musical genre these days.

    Just Bummed…….

    Jessica had a Hit??? Which one was that??? The only song she had break the Top 20 this year was Come On Over and that only made it to 18. Wouldn’t exactly call that a hit. Perhaps the Grammys will allow her a spot on their show along with Brittney. I would be very happy if she found her roots some place else!

    I for one am shocked that she wasn’t even nominated for Best New Artist. Daddy must have run out of money to buy her that award.

    Well I think Jessica has a great shot here with being able to open for Rascal Flats starting in January. Rascal Flats obviously see the girl has talent & can sing & should be offered the same start as was given to Carrie , Kellie & Taylor. They all were fortunate to travel with Rascal as we all remember. Nashivlle is knwon for a huge click so take a look also at other huge artists that did not participate this year. Sad actually that this season seems to have forgetten where the roots really are in Country. Sure we all like new age music too but there certainly was not enough for everyone on this shoe. It lacked in personality,humour & at time just down right boring.
    I don’t mind three costume changes at all but give me a break what did we have 7 or more? geez.
    Given the performances by Kellie or Taylor then yes Jessica can hold her own with either of these women vocally. Jessica needs a fair shot at this as does anyone else. I don’t think Carrie has the pull for a snub towards Jessica for this evening but I do think it was considered by the powers that be. Carrie is not perfect by a long shot & can be quite catty. Many women can. Too mnay people have this young woman as being perfect & can do no wrong. Get the blinders off. Carrie is a great singer no doubt but she has some manipulative personality. Is she a bad person NO.
    This is absolutley mean spirited all this hate. Think about it was has jesica done to deserve any of this. If you look at anything put forward by Taylor or Kellie or Carrie & yea Julianne they sing & write about the same things lost loves etc. What you get from Carrie, Kellie & Taylor is a get back at the guy message but not so with Jessica. Right now its the women that are holding Jessica back as they know she is the threat.
    I hope as did DOllY she fights her way to the top. Dolly had to struggle too to break into Nashville so you know Dolly has mentored Jessica well.
    I personally think CMA if they snubbed her are rediculous & are caught up in this Carrie, Tony & Jessica media & have just added the fuel to the fire. Carrie also timed it just right too with her comments. NO I DO NOT HATE CARRIE at all but do lose some respect for her & if you think that was ever an apology that many claimed it was re-read it. All she did was again confirm phone calls & that she would be pissed too if her guy was calling another girl. SOME APOLOGY RIGHT? lol Carrie’s crown is tilting people.

    Oh, and as an added thought…if I were to throw all my convictions out the window…I would have to admit that if Brittny Spears followed in Jessica’s footsteps (by going country, and getting back to her roots…) she would be able to “come-back” easily.

    Ms. Lizisa…

    I bet you think a guy as good looking and charming as me would never go for someone like Jessica…but, you know what…I might be willing to give her a chance.

    As for her roots, out of all the wanna-be’s and posers in the industry right now, it is my honest opinion that she isn’t one of them.

    I formed this opinion awhile back after watching some documentary about her…(I was bored…) and seeing where she actually came from. I know girls like her, and I think I can sympathize with her thought process.

    Of course, I could be terribly wrong…I’ll have to ask her after our wedding…

    I am surprised Jessica did not get the “Most Annoying” Award! We would have had to hear her go on and on about her boyfriend and how he is a football player, blah, blah, blah, blah……She needs to focus more on learning her songs and not starting over in concert before she can do the CMA or a real tour!

    I think the fact that the alternate gig Ms. Simpson could secure was playing the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino is pretty telling as to why she was not invited to perform on the CMAs.

  • Steph says:

    I think she’s genuinely trying. give it time, I think she’ll make her mark eventually. Jess has been at the Opry, and played the CMA festival. I think she should have at least been there, maybe not performing. and she is still eligible for the New Artist award; I mean, if Jason aldean and rodney atkins and kellie pickler can still be nominated when they are clearly not new, so can jessica. Next year maybe!
    Her not being there does look a little suspicious to all the gossipy conspiracy searchers. and not just about Carrie hosting and all. But if they really are ok with each other that would have been the perfect place to show it.
    (here’s my inner bitch showing, but oh, well) And by all means bring Tony, Jess. If Carrie can make underhanded and possibly false statements about your man, and then apologize about them 5 MONTHS later, you can certainly appear as the couple everyone knows you two are to the same awards show she brought him to! She’s dating someone else anyway (where was the dear doc BTW?) she shouldn’t care, right? They are friends, no? (I know that wouldn’t have sat well with Cowboys fans and people requiring class for country divas, but still…indulge your inner bitchy fantasy Team Jessica members)

    Played the CMA Festival???? That is news to me!!! I know she made an appearance and signed autographs but I didn’t hear anything about playing. (Unless playing has another meaning than singing)

    She was given a chance in country music just like any other new artist. That is probably why her first song made it to #18 and her current single is not going anywhere on the charts.

    Us mag. said it was an apology. The original article was in Elle mag. and Carrie stated the last time he was calling her was May.
    She has nothing to apologize for.
    Tony lied to Jessica when she asked him where you calling her. He was indeed calling her while they were dating. Just like he called other girls while he was dating Carrie. Tony is a cad. He treats women like crap. Carrie was warning Jessica not to fall for his lies. Jessica deserves better.
    True either one of these girls would be mad if their bf was calling an ex. What girl wouldn’t be? Carrie just was saying hey Im no liar, smarten up Jess, he’s playing you. This is all true and Im in Dallas and no its true for fact.
    Tony is lucky Jessica didn’t tell him to get lost. She does deserve better, any girl does, but Tony has a way of manipulating with that grin of his.
    Notice in the TV guide article Carrie says she’s pulling for Brett Farve and Vince Young this season. No mention of her childhood fav the Cowboys or Tony Romo. Its good ridance and quit calling me. Youv’e used my name enough for publicity, leave me alone, and enjoy your life with Jessica

    When did Carrie tour with RF? Taylor did and maybe Kellie some but Carrie when did that happen?

  • Scott says:

    Posted: November 15th, 2008 at 11:43 am

    I don’t believe that Carrie toured with Rascal Flatts. She joined Brad Paisley and then Keith Urban, but that’s about it.

    As for the whole Jessica/Carrie thing, it’s just drivel that was blown out of proportion by the media. Unfortunately, the mindless masses has allowed themselves to be baited and are using it to form their opinions about both women. People need to be intelligent enough to realize that magazine interview usually take place 2-3 months before it hits the stands. Carrie did the interview in May when Tony and Jess were not together. The magazine came out in August when they were dating. Two months later, Elle magazine’s interview with Carrie about the situation came out.

    In any case, it’s just garbage. Like who you like, and ignore the gossip mills.

    Scott

  • Steph says:

    Posted: November 15th, 2008 at 11:55 am

    That’s the same excuse Carrie gave; that the magazine interview was months before it was published. She knows that now, but didn’t know that then? please. tony and jessica were supposedly never off. you just used tabloid drivel to form your opinion of what happened. Carrie knew her comments would stir everybody up, whether she meant harm or not. She should have kept her mouth shut. she’s been famous long enough to know everyone will jump on everything she says.

  • dj says:

    Posted: November 15th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

  • Vicki says:

    What is all the fuss about? Jessica had one song out..what about Ashton Shepherd who had two great songs out? Or Blake Shelton who had 3 great songs out this year..why didn’t he get to sing? Why didn’t Julianne get to sing? It’s because there wasn’t enough time to do it all. That’s the reason Jessica didn’t get to sing..if she took that as in insult then she’s wrong. Better artists than her didn’t get to sing either.

  • AJ says:

    Of all the much bigger names and faces of country music (like them or not) who were not there, I don’t see the significance of this particular one being missing from the show. They act as if this was some MAJOR deal and statement that Jessica was not there for whatever reasons. I personally just don’t see the significance here.

    Agg, sorry about the loss, BTW.

    and just because i’m a big fan of his: Kid Rock was selling just as well in the mainstream as anybody. he was selling on average 100,000 albums a week without downloads (!) and without country music.

  • DJ says:

    Posted: November 15th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

    I had completely forgotten about Jessica until seeing this and didn’t even notice she was missing from the CMAs. The snubber? Maybe. The snubbee? There is no way the CMA could have snubbed her. How can the Country Music Association snub anyone who has hardly done anything in country music?

    “Simpson had reportedly asked the powers that be if she could have a coveted performing spot on the show.”

    Surely you jest! Jessica has got to be kidding if she thinks she had a snowball’s chance of performing on the CMAs, and the nerve of her to even ask reeks of self-indulgence. Not only should they have said “no, thanks” but “HELL NO”! They probably got a good laugh out of it. There were only 21 performance slots and I could name 30 better artists starting with Ashton Shepherd that deserved to perform before Jessica and didn’t get to. If anything she had a slim chance of being a presenter but not really, and performing was out of the question! How many new artists get to perform? Kellie Pickler is the 2nd most successful new female artist and she didn’t get to perform until her 3rd nomination and 4th awards show even though her CD went gold in just 2 months. That’s what it takes, they have to EARN it with hard work and nominations. No way Jessica was getting a nomination with just 1 single that didn’t make top 15 and a 2 month old album. She didn’t win anything in pop with so many weak singers, so I don’t see her getting nominated for anything in country with many better singers. I wonder what she thinks she has done in a few months to deserve a performance? Darius Rucker got to perform but he had a #1 hit and Kid Rock was close. Lil Wayne didn’t get to sing.

    It was a smart move not to have Jessica perform anyway because she would have been bashed for months after competing on the same stage with so many better artists. Most of the women that performed, Martina, Jennifer, Carrie, Miranda, and Kellie, blow her away! Singing in front of all the stars, she might have been too nervous and forgot lyrics again like when she sang for Dolly. Even Martina said she still gets nervous on live TV.

    “But all’s well that ends well because Simpson booked another gig that night anyway. She played for an intimate crowd at the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Arizona.”

    Not too shabby and she has a lot of $$$$ for the slots. The AHN article you linked to is hilarious! Is “BANG” really the source? lol

    She has a nice voice. She is coming across as a job hopper in the entertainment field since her days of moviegirl. Now she quotes things that sound rehearsed from a publisist when she says she is just doing songs about all her hard life and experiences. Heck , she’s only 20 somethin’…u gotta get some experiences to write and sing about first not these lil hollywood tab x lover squabbles…those ain’t what traditional country songs are about. Anyway, sing and sing loud..she sounds good in voice and pretty to look at to!!!

  • Scott says:

    Steph,

    I’ve enough experience to know that for magazines and other types of publications, interviews are done months in advance and what is published later on is no longer accurate. I didn’t quote Carrie or Jess on anything, so no, I didn’t use “tabloid drivel” to form any opinions. Any impressions I have of Carrie or of Jessica was formed long before this whole scenario was made up.

    Unless you’re a psychic or know Carrie or Jessica personally, you’re in no position to say what either person knew or didn’t know.

    As I said, like whomever you want and ignore the rags.

    Seems like Jewel now has decided to have a small private tour as what Jessica has been doing latley & Jewel is going back to her guitar & acoustics. Good for her. She also speaks highly of Jessica.
    Now for those that say Carrie is straight Country give me a break & take a look at the history of country. Carrie is more pop country than anything.
    I imagine Toby was the same place as the Dixie Chicks. They probably got snubbed too. Dixie has been very straight forward about being snubbed & holds no punches & also as Toby has said before there are many times the best song gets over looked with even being nominated. Toby has no use for that crap & says so. It costs him in the end but Tony is comfortable with who he is as are the Dixie chics. Jessica is learning & by the way a few months ago Natalie Maines stood up for Jessica.
    Nashville is a huge click & like Toby said the best artist is not always recognized.
    Give Jessica time & if she has the patience as did Dolly & Willie & yes even Shania trying to break in she will succeed. The girl can sing & very well acoustiacly. JUst guitar & her.
    If you actaully took time to listen & not preconcieve your notions you would hear that. Heads about Taylor accoustiacly.

    Oh by the way Jessica is on Ellen on WED you may get some answers about CMT. Ellen & Jessica go way back & have a lot of fun together. Jessica owns Ellens house from Beverly Hills.

    Jessica had no right to perform at the cMAS. She is not a nominee and has not paid her dues. I think it was pretty ballsy of her to try to get performance slot– they ask YOU— you don’t ask them.

    I thought she might get a token presenter slot- but I am glad she did not.

    Her song peaked at 18– that is not a BIG HIT as some of you are saying. A song that doesn’t even crack top 10, is not a big hit.

    She does not deserve to get a coveted performer slot over people like bucky covington or other nominees who did not perform either.

    If jess ever gets nominated- fine- then she can perform. Otherwise— NOT!

    While I agree that there are many artists being promoted by the industry that are complete posers, and are meant to disenfranchise country culture…I really don’t see Ms. Simpson as one of them.

    I suppose it’s a tad ironic, but, I DO happen to see Carrie Underwood as a market-driven, poser…who may have true country (cultural) convictions deep down…but is a tool for the market at the moment. (I mention Carrie just to show that my standards aren’t easy to surmount…)

    Jessica is going to have a long career in the country music biz.

    “Just the fact that Dolly Parton (who I hope you agree is REAL COUNTRY) wrote and sang for Jessica’s cd, AS DID Willie Nelson (another REAL COUNTRY singer, yes?) speaks volumes.”

    Just the fact that her album has failed to sell speaks volumes too…about her lack of talent. A “talent” so lacking she managed to fail despite a leg up from Dolly and Willie.

    And please don’t try to argue that her sales are great. The album only sold a little over 100,000 its first month out and has been sinking like a rock in the charts ever since.

    As far as Dolly being Real Country…when it comes to her up bringing, and where she’s from, yes. As far as her music…no. Most of her music has been Pop Country, and when she’s tried to venture past Pop, (Bluegrass for example) her singing becomes forced and not believable. Also, to limit Willie as just another real country singer is absurd.

    jessica probably didnt want tony romo to be checking carrie out while she was hosting thats why she didnt go…and plus carrie performed and she was probablt embarrased to hear how its really done…jess is jealous of carrie because carrie has everything, she’s so beautifull. her career is awesome, and she’s huge in country…jessica didnt want her stupid boyfriend drooling over something he lost

    Just the fact that Dolly Parton (who I hope you agree is REAL COUNTRY) wrote and sang for Jessica’s cd, AS DID Willie Nelson (another REAL COUNTRY singer, yes?) speaks volumes.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    It doesn’t speak volumes to people who don’t like those songs. If Hank Jr. writes a song for Britney Spears or the Jonas Bros. and they sing it chances are I won’t like it. Willie sang with Snoop Dogg was that real country?
    refreshing to see everyone has such healthy self esteems and never makes errors or bad choices. Good group here that’s for sure.
    I’ll have to find another site where flawed people like me post opinions.
    Sorry to have troubled you all with my obviously wrong opinion….:(
    Jessica Simpson is a artist, Just like anyone else. I think she’s great. I think it’s my opinion. I think she has a big heart. I want to see her be accepted as a country artist. I thought counrty fans would be more accepting then this.
    Where is Jessica now adays?. What happened on her CD? Just a blink in the eye she is gone by the wind.
    Please adsvise is this a sign of her country failure??
    She shouldn’t try at all, if i were her i just stay home in think all day for Tony Romo. She never have had any topic for all interviews she had always had the name “Tony”
    I never read any intelligent subject that she said just always Tony…..being in love…..What a damn she was.
