The Unofficial Soundtrack to the 2008 CMA Awards

Posted: November 11th, 2008 at 4:18 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Brad Paisley and Keith Urban

I’ll be working in the CMA Awards pressroom tomorrow night, so I’ve been brushing up on the nominations this afternoon. I am reluctant to make predictions, but I will say that I hope Trace Adkins wins for “You’re Gonna Miss This,” and I’m never disappointed to see Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley or Sugarland at the podium. But I’m not telling you who I voted for. Instead, here’s a playlist with the most notable nominees this year.

Trace Adkins, “You’re Gonna Miss This”

Rodney Atkins, “Cleaning This Gun (Come On In, Boy)”

Jason Aldean, “Relentless”

Brooks & Dunn, “Put a Girl in It”

Kenny Chesney, “Don’t Blink”

Alan Jackson, “Good Time”

Lady Antebellum, “Lookin’ For a Good Time”

Miranda Lambert, “Gunpowder and Lead”

Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney, “Every Other Weekend”

James Otto, “I Just Got Started Lovin’ You”

Brad Paisley and Keith Urban, “Start a Band”

Kellie Pickler, “Best Days of Your Life”

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, “Gone, Gone, Gone”

Rascal Flatts, “What Hurts the Most”

George Strait, “I Saw God Today”

Sugarland, “Stay”

Taylor Swift, “Love Story”

Josh Turner and Trisha Yearwood, “Another Try”

Carrie Underwood, “Just a Dream”

is it just me, or does Brad look like a punk version of Luigi in that hat baseball hat? no offense or anything, but for a split second it looked like a mario bro with a guitar on stage with keith urban! I need to put he PS2 away for a while….

Sounds like a great set-list, but isn’t Rascal Flatss’s song two years old?? Or did Mr. Shellbourne get the wrong title? Also, the CMA news page has photos from rehearsal and they caption the Lady A pics with “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”. ::shrug:: Guess we’ll find out for sure tomorrow.

I’m looking forward to the duets with Brad & Keith, and Kenny & Reba.

There are so many good singers in country anymore. Dosen’t mean they are country. It is sad that some can’t sing at all and get farther than the really good singers. We need to get back to country roots. Get away from the popularity contest.

I’m totally sick of seeing Kenny Chesney at the Entertainer podium so I might not tune in the last 5 minutes of the show. His drunken parties are not my idea of entertainment. The last show I went to of his was nothing but a drunkfest.

I agree with cj. Lets see some good singers who are really country. Sugarland is starting to break my ear drums with her horrible voice. I have to mute her every time she does a song. Lets get back to Good ‘ol music like Alan Jackson, Chris Ledoux, and Garth Brooks. People with real voices, and women? Reba, Faith, and Dolly! I am pullin for Alan this year!

It’s a very sad and disappointing CMA awards because Rascal Flatts is not performing.

Im not sad about that at all. They got to perform twice on the CMAs a couple years ago. BUT, I would still rather see them than Kid Rock or Jessica Simpson

cj, you’ll have to take your “popularity contest” argument to the record labels who put gazillions of dollars behind what THEY think should be “popular”.

As for “Good ol’” music, well, there’s PLENTY of it on MY country radio stations. I’m quite sick of it, frankly. But if you want to “listen live”, google wyyd. You’ll love it.

Country radio has taken quite a “traditional-sounding” turn lately, with more twang, more country/farming/rural themes, and lots of sappy stories. There are a few artists that they let color outside the lines - Swift & Sugarland because they’re POPULAR, and Chesney because he’s “earned it” - but most have had to “go back to the well” to get air play. When you’ve got high caliber artists like Alan Jackson going from the subtle and sensuous sounds of “Red On A Rose” to the twang and cliche’-infused nonsense of “Good Time”, there’s a PROBLEM!!

Marna - RF *is* performing, according to the list above, I just don’t think they got the song right.

Kevin - RF performed twice on the ACM’s in May of this year - once alone, and once w/Jamie Foxx.

I watched but what was wrong with the sound system….you would think with all the high tech videography they would have a high tech sound. Taylor Swift and Kid Rock and Kellie Pickler for that matter didn’t sound like they had the mics even turned on. GEE and I was hoping to hear it all in great sound. Fire the sound check man.

Sugarland is not that good. Nettles sounds like a hurt cow or something. Surely country music has better than her. So lets hear it! Oh and “note to self CMA folks”…get a sound system!
